I do have a Linux question.
I don't currently HAVE Linux...preferring to work in windows at this time, since that's what Walmart and Compaq put on my computer, and I think they know best.
But I'm wondering something about KLEDS...since I don't have any currently installed LED keyboard lights. I mean...it's common knowledge that after starting it docks to the KDE-Panel and shows you the current state of your keyboard lights.
And I know that if you have a keyboard like Logitech Cordless Desktop or similiar, this should help you to remember if NumLock, CapsLock and ScrollLock are on or off.
My question is, does this work only if your X uses XKB keyboard extension?
Thanks...I hope you can help me with this. Many of you know how I fell for the hype surrounding the release of the Romanian KDE-1.1.2 translations
These were Romanian translations for KDE 1.1.2. BETA3 release. There were 3 packages for download: PO sources, and 2 packages with compiled PO files and an automatic installer.
I was SO pissed, when I paid good money for it, and couldn't make it load up with Windows 98. I fell for the big hype, and the BIG BIG money of the advertisers:
RIGHT!!! Like I'll ever beleive that again. How can I send my Romanian friends letters without this? Can you guys PLEASE help me?:lol:

You're the Wisconsin Boy...and this French product was imported my American Motors, Kenosha's Finest... I was just up in K-town today, which must have made me think of it.
“Le Car” version
The "Le Car" version sold by American MotorsThe Renault "Le Car" was marketed in North America by American Motors (AMC) where it competed against other front-wheel-drive subcompacts such the Honda Civic (which was also introduced in 1972) and the newly introduced Volkswagen Rabbit. The American introduction was delayed until 1976.
The Le Car name was ridiculed among Francophones[citation needed], as it literally means "the coach". The U.S. version featured a 1397 cc engine that produced 55 hp (41 kW), and a more conventional floor-mounted shifter was substituted for the dash-mounted unit. Sales continued through 1984.

Basically correct. Mint also includes proprietary codecs (sp?) such as for mp3 playback that Ubuntu doesn't by default.

In short. Yes. Of course both sides will argue this, that, and the other, but if you took two typical home computer users, one familiar with Mint/Ubuntu linux and the other with Windows and suddenly switched their operating systems I'm confident that both would have a virtually pain free transition.
This was proven to me when my wife asked me to put Ubuntu on her desktop. That says a lot right there, IMO...of course what should have taken an hour of my (our) time has now taken 1783 posts and an unmeasureable ammount of man hours. So please take it with a grain of salt.

Initial few days were tense, I can assure you...
Wife: If you do anything to f**k up the computer...*face turned red at this point and vein in neck bulged*
Me: Relax, honey...it's a liveCD. Nothing bad can happen...
Wife: I'm warning you--I've got online classes to attend and assignments to turn in. I don't like the idea of this Linux thing at all. If I fail my classes because of this--
Next day =>
Wife: Honey, this Linux thing is pretty cool.
Me: Can I ditch Windows now?
Wife: NO!
Next day =>
Wife: Can you put it on my computer?

Actually I'm just kidding about the amphetamines. However, caffeine is my major drug of choice. The best way I have currently found to get the right amount actually working is with Mad Croc gum. This stuff rocks!
I like drinking coffee but it does not have the same caffeine punch to really wake me up the way the gum does.

You'll see it...it's right on US2.
MY last trip (Memorial Day) to UP...coming home, I had a taste for "Mickey-Lu's" BBQ in Marinette. I could just taste it as I got closer. It was Memorial Day. Imagine my horror when the parking lot was empty and it said "Closed Mondays". Oh well, down to the Peshtigo Corral...which ALSO was closed. DAMMIT!!!!! Heading south on 35 just past Hudson, there is a place called Ave's and there sign is a baby blue Semi trailer. They specialize in cheese (hey, it is Wisconsin) and taxidermy. The sign used to say "Wisconsin's Finest Taxidermy and Cheese!" but they've since painted over the "and Cheese!"

Fine, fine. I can't get transcode to compile because it wants to use the imagemagick compile flag but apparently it can't use it right now? (why last time and not this time? Stay tuned...) This bug has been seen and filed at Gentoo, but has anyone else seen it?
Transcode is necessary for VLC (the excellent video player) and necessary for mythtv, the TiVo-like package that lets you build your own PVR. Therefore, I need transcode to keep using my MythTV, which I dearly love since Mrs. Soapbox records lots of shows I won't watch on the "real" TiVo.
Not that I dislike Gentoo, but sometimes the compiles can be fraught with peril. I gotta say that Ubuntu wins this issue hands-down, if the packages are already compiled by Ubuntu's team.

Yeah, I just don't like littering /etc/portage with a bunch of exceptions. It's weird though, most of the time the x86 versions are more or less okay, but I think this bug is more universal. Still, if I start getting problems with transcode, you can bet I'll get the latest version asap.

Mrs. Soapbox is already 4 lbs. below her pre-pregnancy weight and just tickled about it. My little one is a smidge over three weeks old and still the cutest baby ever (and I'll understand if some of you take issue with that statement). She's starting to figure out that "the hands" belong to her, and we've already taken her out to dinner a few times, and to the drive-in movie theater. Here's a picture of her at two weeks old (I don't have all my photos at the office). And thanks for asking!

I hear horror stories of people who try to shield their kids from anyone and everyone! It's impractical, it's harmful, and it makes anti-social children, in my opinion. She needs to play in the dirt, be outside, be around people, get held by relatives and friends, etc. I will take a bullet for her and make sure she doesn't eat any poop, but I won't stop her from wading in a rain puddle or skinning her knee when she's three.

I hope to coordinate this post (1959) with my memories of the same year, but since I was only two at the time, it's very difficult to recall anything. But if you add the sum of the numbers, 1+9+5+9...you get a very interesting number...24.
There are 24 hours in a day! There are 24 cans of beer in a case!
7- 11 is open 24 hours.
I think this is something like a Fibonacci sequence, isn't it?
Then...to make it even MORE spooky--- 2 + 4 = 6! 1959+6=1965, the year Mary Poppins came out. I do remember that.
Glad to help with the post count.

Oh, and I had a seriously stupid moment this morning on my desktop Linux box. The package manager was saying that python was blocking the installation of the python-updater, so I thought "well, that's fine, I'll just uninstall python and reinstall it after python-updater gets built and installed."
Seriously, I didn't have any coffee this morning, and this is what I get for it, dammit.
Jesse, you idiot--the package manager RUNS IN PYTHON. So now I have to download and install python myself, fighting with the system the whole way (because python is really, really, supposed to be installed). So I win the first fight, and then the package manager doesn't know python is there, of course because it didn't install it, so its first bright idea is that it needs to install python...using python. Arrrrgh! Man I'm still paying for this error.
Let's compare this to a nice straight-razor slice because you weren't paying attention. Aaaaand let's just finish up with some lemon juice aftershave while we're at it.

gentoo uses python to run its portage package management engine; it doesn't download a finished binary, but rather the source code plus patches, and compiles it...while you wait.
So without python (I should have pulled only the most recent python and left 2.4.x in place), I couldn't run things through emerge, but rather, the old ./configure && make && make install

This was going to be my 2000th post, but I need to get to bed. I have a few other pics anyway, that I will post for 2000 if I am so privileged.
Wow!!! Here we are at post number 2000 and if I time this just right it will also be my 2000th post on B&B. Here's a little recap so far.
Corey decides he has nothing better to do but install Linux Mint on his computer.

With a little help from a few friends at B&B he manages to get it installed but does this to his laptop.

So Cory gives up on Mint and throws everything over for Ubuntu. I think I know why, (and I'm not even a computer geek).

Now after many more helpful posts from his pals at B&B his computer headquarters looks like this. Except he can't find his ethernet cable to make it all work.

What a pity. If he doesn't find the missing ethernet cable he will be all washed up.

Way to go Cory. This is an awesome thread. I'm still gunning for 2000!

That's awesome! I had no idea the history of this thread was so...coherent. :001_huh:

Wow, thanks for the photo tribute to the now infamous Linux Mint thread, which started off as one man and a dream.

Yes, that really was something(!) and he really did an accurate and concise job of summing this whole deal up. Unfortunately I didn't have a fire extinguisher handy when doing that RAM upgrade about 50 pages back. They all warned me about the static and even suggested one of those anti-static cuffs, but I didn't listen...the open bottle of grain alcohol sitting next to the laptop also probably wasn't a good idea.

Just a few more posts; OldSaw, are you watching closely? You've gotta be ready, since there's no telling how eager Cory will be to post more "anus burger" pictures "from Canada; you wouldn't know her..."

Woo Hoo!!! 2000 posts. I didn't think this thing would last this long. Since this thing started I made a few observations.
After snapping this picture of Cory's car in Canada, I had to resize it to upload it to B&B. While doing that I discovered what is on the next picture stuck to the house.

I'm not sure if Cory did this next one or his wife, but they are getting pretty serious about their Linux operating systems and it is rumored that this is the wallpaper and screen saver on all the Lynchmeister computers. This screen shot was sent to me anonymously from someone behind the Cheddar Curtain.

After all, Mr. G wouldn't steer you wrong, he thinks whatever OS Walmart supplies is the best. I don't see him having any problems with his OS.
OK, that's it I'm outta here.... at least for the weekend. I have a sail boat race to participate in that will have me away from the computer.
Oh, and thanks Cory for the last few posts to help me reach my goal. I gotta get a job.
