Are you dual booting with windows?
How big are your partitions?

Nope, click on places, computer.
Then right click the various drives and choose properties, it should tell you how big the partitions are.
Although you are definately full on space in for linux partition, we need to see if we can give it more space from somewhere else.

My next option is to check your partitions with gparted, but with no way to install it due to lack of space it will be tough, hehe.
Are you dual booting with Windows?
From what I can tell, you have a 120gb drive, with 117.5gb for Windows and 2.4gb for Ubuntu.
You generally want a minumum of 10gb for Ubuntu so you don't run into problems like this... Still it can be fixed... but it may get tricky.

To proceed with this I recomend Parted Magic boot cd.
You can download it here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/partedmagic/files/partedmagic/Parted%20Magic%204.4/pmagic-4.4.iso.zip/download
It's a zipped iso, unzip it and burn the iso to a cd. (In windows, since you won't have any space to do it in Ubuntu.
It's also a livecd linux distro, made for editing partitions. I'll try and give you a hand with this part if we connect later.
You can also check out these instructions.

Although I would make sure you have a backup, because there's a slight chance that somthing can go terribly wrong :-P

Ok, I think we'll need to enable the "restricted" graphics drivers. Restricted only because they're not open source.
Go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers
(I think this is it, I'm on XP at work doing this by memory)
That should show you a window with some driver options, what are they?
Protip: pressing the print screen button on your keyboard will bring up a dialog to save a screenshot.
Great, new problem. When I go to Hardware drivers, there are none.

Okay, Jordon. I've fixed the other problem and caught up to this point. Now what?
So you've got some free space now?
Once fusion-icon is running right click it and choose settings manager.
In the CompizConfig Settings Manager, top middle, click General Options
In the general options section go to the last tab on the top and choose "Desktop Size" and where it says Horizontal Virtual Size put 4, and leave the other two at 1. Then click "back" in the bottom left.
Scroll down to the "Desktop" section of the main window and enable (click the check mark) "Desktop Cube" and "Rotate Cube" it will probably tell you that it needs to disable desktop wall or something, that's fine, just disable it.
Once this is all done you now have your fancy cube.
Hold left ctrl+alt and click anywhere on your desktop to move your cube around, or you can ctrl+alt and use the arrow keys.
These are separate destops, you can run different programs on differnt sides of the cube if you want to keep work and play separate or whatever.
I hope i was clear here.
There are lots of different options you can play with in the settings manager, knock yourself out, just do one thing at a time so you remember how to change it if you don't like it.

it is 4 desktops, there is a way to put a different background on each one, but i don't remember how =\ Google can help you.
You'll also want to install the restricted-extras
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
This will give you flash, java and all of the media codecs that you'll ever need to play various movies and music files.

Jordan's doing a great job with the tech support side of the house right now, so here's my take on things.
First -- how much typing will you be doing? Light, or heavy? If heavy, that means you need a good screen for reading and a good keyboard or typing. If you really want a light computer that just lets you surf the internet and type Word documents and play a few online games, you can get away with less computer overall. If you want to play Bioshock and edit movies, you're looking at a serious investment.
Second -- how long do you plan to own the machine? Three years? Five? In five years, what's top-rank now will look seriously outdated and will just barely be capable of doing the tasks you mentioned in your request. If you want a five-year machine (note that you'll be buying a new battery for your laptop in about three years, at which point you should also replace your hard drive), get a top-of-the-line model now -- because you'll be stuck with it for a while.
Does any of this resonate, Doug?

knowing some of the things you may use it for, I'd say you'll need a medium-high to bottom-end-of-high end machine (does that make sense?)
because of the video portion I know you'll be wanting to do, as much as it pains me to suggest Intel of AMD, you'll want at least a Core 2 Duo. I don't think the i7 or quad cores are available in laptops yet, but I read some reviews that showed the Intel Core 2 Duos beat the AMD quad cores in many tests :frown:
AMD used to be the king, but they didn't predict the market as well as Intel did this time around, I guess.
Anyway, I wouldn't go all out with bells and whistles, but a good processor and some beefy RAM (2 Gig minimum) should get you going good.
If it weren't for the video uploading/editing I know you'd be doing, I wouldn't suggest such a high-end rig (if your wife's Macbook wasn't so locked down, I would suggest using it)

Depends on how intensive your video requirement is. And how long you're willing to wait for a finished product. Video rendering requires unbridled computing power -- beefy processor, graphics card, and RAM. If you're willing to let your computer sit unused for a day or two while it crunches numbers for rendering, you can get away with surprisingly less powerful systems... but anything timely is going to require substantial horsepower.
Also, I'm not sure what your need is for software suites, but this can come into play as well. If you're willing to use a few-revisions-old version of Adobe Premiere you may be able to get away with using a less expensive machine. Software overhead tends to increase with each revision. If you aren't beholden to any software manufacturer and are willing to learn, use open source software instead, where the overhead tends to be smaller.
Keep in mind that these are in general terms, and do not apply to render times.

I have told this story around here somewhere, but here goes.
My dad has had the same bike for 30 years. It gave it to grandpa who rode it until he retired and it sat in the garage until my dad got it back. It is a '69 or '70 Honda CB 750. Last month, he bought a '96 Harley Sportser. He won't give up the Honda outright, but is giving it to me on permanent loan.
He told me how grandpa took him to an auction when he was a teenager and helped him buy his first motorcycle. Grandpa told dad he was worried but his dad had helped him buy his first bike and he promised he would do the same for his son someday. Therefore, dad said he can't rightly not give me the bike.
I have only rode in alleys before, so he is going to teach me. He wants me to ride with him until I am comfortable.
I am really excited to be able to ride but look forward to riding with dad more than anything. We are planning to go out Saturday since we both have that night off.

How does bike licensing work where you are?
Here there's a written test to get a permit, the permit only allows you to take classes with a registered school, you have to do 8 weeks of classes, then you can take a closed course road test, then you get a probationary license which means you can ride on regular roads, but only with another licensed rider with you, then after a year of probationary you're free to ride.
I've got my learner's permit, but passed on lessons this summer because they're $500 and I'm going back to school, but next summer is bike summer. (Permit's valid for 2 years)
My dad drives "vintage" Hondas pretty much exclusively, I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure it's the CX500, he's got two from '79 one from '80 and just picked up a big '81 Goldwing so my mom will feel more comfortable riding "in the back" (can't call it what it is when it's my mom, heh)
One of the CX500's is chopped, one is stock and keep getting original parts put back onto it, recently he found a "like new" original gas tank with the original decals, no fade or peel and the third is pretty much for parts/learning how to take apart and put back together.

Indiana is weird. You have to pass a written test to get your permit. On a permit, you have to wear a helmet, cannot carry passengers, and cannot ride after dark. A permit is good for one year and you can renew it one time. You have to be able to pass a road test to get your endorsement, but a class is not necessary.

Yeah, the <meta> key is usually "Alt", and the <super (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_key_(keyboard_button))> or <hyper> (same thing, but it's tough finding keyboard modifier names, okay??) is usually mapped to Windows or the Apple "Command" key.

Awesome!
Linux.
Wisconsin is similar. I'm also riding on a permit with the same conditions as you describe. The only difference being that mine is valid for 6 months and can be renewed up to 3 times (at $36.00 a pop) before getting an endorsement is the only option.

Thanks fellars for the laptop advice. It's hard for me to be specific with what I'll be using it for, because those needs change month to month, year to year, interest to interest. Cost is really not a concern, but I was thinking more in terms of brands, processors, graphics cards, etc.
Thanks.

mp3 is a proprietary codex and therefore not included in most linuxes. You should be able to download it through ubuntu (at a cost) or be very clever with google and find it for free (altho of questionable legallity). There should be an app in ubuntu to do this for you (legally), but I can't remember the name. If you double-click an mp3, maybe the downloader launches itself?

I think it's basically to allow you to establish an entire wired home network with internet access.. Only one computer physically contacts the internet via the router, but the whole home network can share the connection or some such. Anyhow, it's unnecessary if you're going wireless.

NO. You almost certainly do not want to enable your machine to *be* a router. This becomes especially gnarly if you are able to connect to a wireless network while attached to a wired network. Some clue-free graduate student where I used to work enabled this setting (in XP) and it caused me weeks of pain until I found it and threw it out a window. (Okay, okay, I didn't do that, but I really wanted to).

Since virtually all DSL modems and cable modems already behave like a router, this setting is unlikely to be useful unless you're on dial-up (and just see how much fun sharing dialup makes, oh, say, youtube) or have a modem that cruelly locks itself to your MAC address.
Of course, it takes about two minutes to circumvent MAC address restrictions on such devices, but I digress.

No sloppy focus aka unix focus aka focus-follows-mouse (with no auto-raise) aka The One True Focus Model. It is shameful. Even more shameful is the fact that they, in fact, use this focus model only for the mouse wheel. I can scroll in a doc by mousing over it and turning the wheel. I just want the same for all my input :cursing:
I've used ffm since '99 and even have it working on windows. It is so very disruptive to not have it since everything on the mac requires tons of clicks to accomplish.

I disagree that it sucks for everyday use. My everyday use has a lot less to do with gaming, hdmi, and this stuff than yours does apparently. I need OSs that I can form fit to my workflow. I shouldn't need to change how I work to use the OS.

Maybe one day they'll let me install linux on my workstation :(
This becomes even more necessary when you're running multiple monitors!

considering that many people are overly linux fanboys, i have to even things out. games is not technically non-existent, but for the most part, it's terrible. wine emulation is too much of a hassle for normal users. i've tried selling multiple people onto linux, yet in the end, i noticed it wasn't feasible for normal (non computer savvy) users. you have to go to the command at some point or another, regardless of the distro. it's a hassle. nvidia hdmi support doesn't work worth a crap last i tried and still probably the same. it will load video, but no audio. i know linux works for some as a every day thing, but for the majority of the public, no it does not. some call this trolling. i call it a different perspective. also, i was probably drunk when i did that first post, as i was during the 2nd. so, my bad for repeating myself. just makes me annoyed that some people overly congratulate on linux.

OMG that is awesome. I didn't know California vanity license plates included hyphens and stars.
Blake:
rm is the "remove" command. the r and f arguments mean "all files in all directories and recurse through however many directories there are under each directory." The asterisk is the wildcard character, meaning "match all files that have a name with at least one character, whatever it might be."
example: if you type (AND NEVER EVER EVER DO THIS)
rm -rf /
while you are root, the command effectively means "erase all files in all directories on this entire disk partition."

I don't think it is limited to a single disk partition. It should get all devices mounted read-write. Most times, rm will not be able to complete this command before the system goes offline. That said, if the system can't stay up. It pretty much guarantees it won't come back up.

I'm not all that familiar with laptops, but Dell makes a decent product (tho I've heard that quality has gone down in recent years). If you do go with a Dell, just double check on any printers, etc. you may have/buy... not all Dell prods (some of the 3-in-one printers notable) won't work under linux. Also, if you go with a dell printer, you are locked in to using their ink carts due to a chip in the carts.
You may also want to look into ASUS or ACER, either their netbooks or standard laptops. Linux available and all set up to work. I have no direct experience with ACER, but can recommend ASUS. Their customer support is also very good.

It looks like a very nice rig. Personally, I'd pay the $20 for the 250 to 320 gig upgrade on the hard drive size -- for that price, it's worth it. Other than that, you're guaranteed a rig that has all components fully supported (sometimes an annoyance if you bought a laptop and later decided to put Linux on it), and the price seems competitive.
If you buy a rig without Linux pre-installed, be sure to check Linux on Laptops (http://www.linux-laptop.net/) to make sure there aren't any issues with closed source drivers for any of the hardware. This is becoming less of an issue over time, but better safe than sorry. Well, better safe than mildly annoyed until the drivers are downloaded, anyway.

I cover the rm command in the Linux Fundamentals class I teach, always proceeded with "Do Not Do This . . . Ok, what did I just say . . . " to make sure people don't just perk up when I start writing on the board and then fire off the command.
Of course, one can do the same thing in Windows by opening cmd.exe, doing cd C: and then rd /s /q * . That will only wipe out the C: partition, though.
The extra fun part is that since most Windows users run accounts with full administrative privileges, no sudo or knowledge of passwords is required. Not that I would ever actually use that knowledge for evil, of course. :a2:

It's possible to install Ubuntu alongside the Mac OS X (which is itself now built on top of a version of Linux's distant cousin BSD). There's info here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-1_5-2/Jaunty). I'm assuming it's a MacBook Pro 5, since it's new. Apparently, the only thing that doesn't work (though some things require driver installs after the initial install) is soft reboot.
Using an old laptop can also be a fun way to mess around with Linux, and in the meantime resurrect old hardware into something usable again. Gear that would choke on Windows XP or Vista often chugs along merrily with Mint, Ubuntu, or even better, a lightweight desktop environment distro like Xubuntu.

I wouldn't install on top, like a Windows system. I used Boot Camp to partition the drive and fresh install Linux Mint to the new partition. I did that on an older BlacBook.
The closest thing I have to being on top of an OS I do is running Mint in Parallels - installing the tools allows a near-seamless integration. The only speed hits I note are when I run 3D type stuff. That's on an older white iMac with 4GB of RAM and Intel Core 2 Duo, a pre-Chipotle' styled Macs.

There are others here who can help you more than I can. But, start with google & the ubuntu forums when it comes to wifi. Not all chipsets work under liunx yet. Also, may want to look into "ndiswrapper" which is a kludge, but will work if worse comes to worst.
As for wired, it should be basically "plug n play". 99.9% of ethernet cards are supported by linux. you may want to have everything wired up / connected before you boot the system.

Great news on the Macbook. I learned a little about Mac computers when I was in college, this last semester.
The open road is treating me well. When I went out with my first trainer, room was limited and since he hauled flatbeds there was no time for computing after long hours of strapping, tarping and driving. This most recent trainer offered me an entire cabinet to keep my stuff and I left my computer at home.
I logged in from a company terminal, but could not post. Then I finally broke down and bought an iPod Touch, only to discover that it can't be used until hooked up to a computer. I got a load going by the house Saturday night, so after spending the night with my wife, I grabbed the computer on the way out the door.
I am now at a company terminal and will be testing tomorrow. If that goes well, I will get my own truck and maybe a few days off.

Wow, great to see you back online Dennis! So you're a trucker in training? I guess I've been out of the loop myself. At any rate, sounds like an exciting career change. Wish you all the best in this new endeavor!
Well... I didn't advertise it. After going back to college for a year it seems like a step backward. It's one of those things I have always wanted to do and since I had to go back to work for a while, I figured the time was right.
I'm currently stuck in Gary, IN for the night. :frown:

So...my wife and I are looking at buying another PC...whether it's gonna be a laptop or desktop, I'm not sure, but it will have an HDMI port, which I will use to connect to our 46" HD LCD TV. Oh yeah, baby.
If we don't find a laptop (I'm pushing for a desktop), we will be building a pimped out tower from scratch for ~$400.
Whether we get a package with Windows 7 or not, you can be sure that it will also be running the latest incarnation of Linux Mint.
Edit: Forgot to mention that we will be getting a wireless mouse and keyboard too so that we can cruise the net from the comfort of our living room couch. I may even attempt a MythTV setup!

Man, am I wearing out the Linux lately. I finally got the PXE boot and kickstart (scripted re-build of a given machine) working, but none of my customizations yet, so that's going to take some time. The wall-of-video isn't built, but I have made progress on lots of other avenues lately.
The facility isn't big (about 30' x 14') but we're not trying to cram too much into the space -- at least, not yet.
The place is unpacked almost all the way but only a few things are in their permanent home.
Sorry to be absent so much lately. But I've been really learning new things about Linux, most of which won't be useful on a desktop machine, ha ha.
That metal frame looks almost as big as my TV Screen

Well, right now it's playing hell with my fonts when running four monitors at once (remotely, from the root machine). "Can't do" is a bit strong, but "won't do" is definitely in play today. Grrr.
On the other hand, the fact that I've got 1/3 of my "big wall" running isn't the end of the world, either.

If I only had a coax cable HD hookup in my lab...
But here's a pic of the first third of the challenge. What you can't see is that while it works, and while you can control these four screens from a computer besides the one they're hooked up to, using Xdmx, the fonts are really wonky and the graphics performance is so-so.
On the other hand -- it works!

Recently posted at distrowatch.com, some ubuntu & mint news:
It's time again to find out what release of Ubuntu (http://distrowatch.com/ubuntu) +1 (version 10.04), will be called. According to this blog post by Lisa Hoover (http://ostatic.com/blog/ubuntu-version-9-10-code-named-lucid-lynx), Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth made the announcement at the Atlanta Linux Fest, revealing that the code name of Ubuntu 10.04 will be "Lucid Lynx" (here is the video announcing the new name (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l02bhwofEqw)). The upcoming 9.10 release will be, of course, "Karmic Koala", which builds further on the distro's technology, especially in the cloud. The first version for 2010 will be a long-term support (LTS) release, which are generally less cutting-edge. It's good timing because what Ubuntu needs now is more polish. The One Hundred Paper Cuts (https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts) project is doing a great job sorting out these small niggling issues, but to compete with Apple's OS X for consumer's money (one of Mark Shuttleworth's primary goals for the distro) still needs work. The release therefore, is aptly named, as it will hopefully indeed be lucid - easily understood and completely intelligible. If Canonical can get it right, it might be the final push companies need to ditch Windows and put Ubuntu on their mainstream consumer products.

http://distrowatch.com/images/icon-small/mint.png (http://distrowatch.com/mint) The founder of Linux Mint (http://distrowatch.com/mint), Clement Lefebvre, has posted an update on what he's been working on recently (http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=1049). He walks through some changes for the upcoming "Helena release", including the renaming of various Mint tools to more useful names, such as "Software Manager" over "mintInstall." He also cites improvements to the installation and removing of packages: "When an application is listed, mintInstall now queries APT to find out whether it's installed on the system and what versions are installed and/or available. This process is almost immediate and doesn't impact the responsiveness. This basically means that, looking at an application, you'll be able to see if it's already installed or not, you'll be able to see its version and you'll be able to install it but also to remove it from mintInstall." The refresh button is also being removed in order to ease the load on Linux Mint servers and some improvements to the interface are coming, including optimisation for the smaller screen size on netbooks.
