Hey -- just a quick update to my Linux Mint homies:
Dad brought up some samples of his latest test batch of shaving soap.
Wow.
I mean, oh hell yeah.
I think we need to modify the final product some, but for a radical redesign of the formula (and deliberately not adding much bentonite clay or glycerin), damnation it made good, slick, long-lasting lather and I didn't bother with witch hazel or aftershave when I shaved with my Slant for the second time today (just WTG and XTG).
I will get the shaving cream samples next week. I can't wait to see how that performs, though it's a near-totally different recipe.
I can now say that Dad has solved -- forever -- at least one of my shavepocalypse fears. Next up: blacksmithing lessons from Tim Zowada...
And yes, Rich, we can get lemongrass and sage essential oils for one of our scents. Though I gotta say, the totally unscented smells nice. I, myself, am eager to see how an almond/avocado essential oil combo works.
Note to casual B&Bers stopping by: (a) this is a cold process tallow soap; (b) we aren't selling it yet; (c) when we do start selling it I'll post in the "Shopping" thread since it's uncool to pimp your shaving products anywhere else on the board; and (d) this particular batch won't be available for general beta testing, but we will do something a little broader when we get it "right".

Well said. I try to be very careful -- overly so -- about my place here since I'm the son of soap manufacturers. I didn't join to advocate for their products; the reverse is true -- I joined B&B and then started pressuring Mom and Dad to start experimenting with shaving soap and shaving cream!
I like to think that folks who know me wouldn't see it that way, but I don't want to be singled out because "the mods let Jesse advocate for his shaving soap, but not other soapmakers." You know?

It means I can do a direct swap of two of the hard drives in my current rig rather than having to buy a special card so that computer could recognize them. From there, I'll put FreeNAS on it and rig up RAID5. Unfortunately, one of the drives (the IDE drive) is only 120GB meaning I'll only have 240GB accessible, but I have a feeling some bigger ones will go on sale.

Linux has had full NTFS support (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/) for some time now. Since Mint is based on Ubuntu it also supports it. Heck, it's actually to the point I trust gparted to resize my NTFS partitions without worrying about data loss. So anyway, yeah... it works and it works well.

OK guys, sorry to go back on topic, but here's a weird one for you....
what to you do when "kill" won't kill?
I went to play a CD today and launched "kscd" (the kde cd player) from a terminal. it didn't launch and went zombie. so, I did a "killall kscd" = nothing. "sudo killall kscd" also did nothing. so, did a ps -e to get the pid.
then did a "kill -9" with the pid, still nothing. same for a sudo kill -9
by now, I'm at WTF stage and just ended up doing a total reboot after which kscd was finally gone and launched normally, I might add.

Well of course it was gone after a reboot. Reboots are to zombie processes what flamethrowers are to real zombies!
However, in real linux (i.e. not Unix or FreeBSD Unix/Mac OS X), I haven't ever come across a process that kill -HUP or kill -9 [pid] wouldn't stop dead. That's what root is for! Ask no questions, just do it dammit!
Now, in Mac OS X, I've had a number of occasions where
kill -9 --i-mean-it --no-really-dammit [pid]
didn't allow me to really reboot the Finder, or clobber the Dock, or log out, etc. I can't explain those either.

a few services tho tend to survive (well restart themselves) after a kill -9, but they tend to be important things like X. maybe thats the "root" () of your OSX prob. (yeah, I know X isn't really a service)

Rich's admonishments aside, not much. It's been pretty quiet around here. I finally broke down and despite the recession bought a Mergress, which arrived today. It's quite a looker. My collection of adjustables is pretty much complete. I gotta say the Super Adjustable is a fantastic razor, and I'm eager to get some work done with the Progress/Mergress. In the past, I've gotten my best shaves from non-adjustables (Slant, NEW, HD, 1948 Aristocrat), but I'm also trying out some "shavepocalypse" blades to start stocking up on at least one brand.
Oh, Dad made a new batch of tallow-based shaving soap that rocks the house. It's not perfect, but it's really good.

Sure, the processes might be restarting (antivirus, e.g., should always do this!), but when they fail to close properly in the first place, they never come back up because there's already a stuck process sitting there, zombie/pegged/something. I do wish that I could get the TrueBlue environment (i.e. the finder and login window) to stop for a while, so I could deal with whatever was causing them such pain.
OTOH, I think Snow Leopard will finally be a total re-write of the Finder, which still contains some Carbon code; maybe then it'll behave better. Maybe.

Not yet; I've been in a hurry the last couple of times shaving my head and just did that in the shower with the ol' thin-handle Tech and the standard GMSC bath soap. I've shaved with it three times so far and have gotten consistent lather of good quality all three times. I'm really pleased, but I've never used MWF or Tabac so I can't compare the lather.

Sounds like you need to send me a sample. <wink, wink, nudge, nudge>

Dad's building a second batch this week, with a few modifications. But I'll be sure you get a puck. You want one now or later? I've got three pucks at present, and Rich gets one, Chip gets one (he doesn't know it yet, but I need to ship him something anyway), and...I guess you get one! Uh, congrats on finishing your exams -- here's some mad scientist shaving soap!

Uhhh....
Hey, look, a distraction!
*runs away*
:shifty:
Uh... after a quick search, you have to enable logging... and apparently it creates huge log files fast so you don't want to leave it enabled unless you have to.
Set "CRONLOG to YES or to NO in /etc/default/cron"
And it's in /var/cron/log

I did that -- the toothbrush fits better in my stuff sack now! But the ultralight backpacker nuts will go to extreme lengths to reduce the weight they carry; some of that mentality is helpful, but "I brought only what I need" changes if you get a nasty cut, or get surprised by a cold snap, or the mosquitoes are fiercer than you expected. Also, "I carry less so I can travel faster and further" -- well, okay, but how about enjoying the view and the walk? Granted, you can't enjoy the walk if you're miserable from a 55-lb pack, but a 10-lb pack plus food might mean you leave a stove at home, or you have to sleep under a tarp that's not weather worthy for any rain beyond a mild drizzle. And a camera? Well that's a stupid luxury -- why would you want to share the pictures with anyone? Etc.

I was thinking to give the toothbrush thing a try myself, just so it fits in that clear plastic bag all my toiletries go in. I always try to fly carry-on only but Mrs. Chip doesn't go along with it if the trip's more than three days. We picked up some ultralight towels (3oz each) and I'm working on getting some lighter quick-drying pants this summer too. Personally, I never go anywhere without at least some kind of first aid. It's happened enough times that I've cut myself, burnt myself, or twisted something that I always carry a few bandages at the minimum. I also never travel without the camera. People wouldn't believe the trouble I get into if they didn't see photographic evidence.

Which reminds me, I'm installing Gentoo on the new box sometime in the next week. IPCop doesn't recognize the second NIC but Ubuntu does which means I should be able to find the drivers out there somewhere. From there, I'll install squid, Dan's Guardian, apt-cacher (I forget the name exactly), and thunder cache (to cache Windows/Avast updates).

I weighed my pack last night and I'm at 43lbs, more than I'd like but it's doable. I'm still on half borrowed equipment from my folks, we've been buying alot of our own stuff lately, but the heavy stuff, sleeping bags and tent are still borrowed.
I know I'm bringing too much stuff, but seeing as how it's the first trip I've done in ages, I'd rather be slightly uncomfortable with more than I need than f**ked with less than I need. Tonight will be packing round two to see if there's more slimming that can be done. Ontop of that we're expecting definate rain Saturday.

Based on my research for Mrs. Chip I think they're both respectable choices. NotebookReview (http://www.notebookreview.com/) is a great site if you're looking for info.
In the meantime, I have to come on here and brag... I got my IPCop system running in the most hilarious way possible. It wouldn't recognize one of my cards so I have it running inside a VM on an Ubuntu system. Rich, I apologize for recycling this meme, but it works... This summer, a friend and I are building a handful of inexpensive computers and running a handful of VMs on them. We are going to link all of them and then try to infest them with as many viruses as we can. We will have one computer, called the gatekeeper, who will monitor all of the the VMs.

This summer, a friend and I are building a handful of inexpensive computers and running a handful of VMs on them. We are going to link all of them and then try to infest them with as many viruses as we can. We will have one computer, called the gatekeeper, who will monitor all of the the VMs.
itll be our own virus aquarium, just like that XKCD comic.
The one danger is that there's always the risk of something breaking out of the VM. Ah well, I had the same goal... it's just too fun to pass up. I was planning to use Nepenthes (http://nepenthes.carnivore.it/).
 Someone switched my morning brew for decaf! Damn hackers! :letterk2:

Just got back home from Minneapolis.
At the last second I dropped Cory a PM letting him know that we were planning on having lunch at the Punch pizzeria near the U of M. He must have been busy with all his move in duties. Oh well, maybe in the fall when we bring the brat student back to school. If I plan it better, we could have another Midwest meet up.
I gotta go update the pizza thread now. Happy Linux.

Try for a Saturday at the beginning of August. Maybe I'll be able to make it down there then.

Yeah, that is a concern. I think we are going to hard wire them together and take a hard drive image before the fun starts, so if it comes to it, we can quickly restore. the only real fear is that it will breach the various protections and infect the gatekeeper.

So you pull your dog on a sled. Why, are his legs too short? When you get the rental car, will the dog have his own seat or will he ride on your lap, pretending like he is driving? What's your dog's name, Linux perhaps? Maybe you could have a team of penguins pull the sled.
