You don't at least have a cron job to backup /home to a remote RAID server using an ssh certificate to avoid the need for password authentication via a shell script? For shame. Hang your head. :001_rolle

One of these days, but for now it's just the good ole external hard drive and crossed fingers that my apartment doesn't burn down.
I would cron rsync it, but it's a cheap harddrive and I don't want to wear it out, so I just turn it on when I need to shuffle data around.
Plus all of the important documents and pictures are all either online somewhere (picassa, flickr, facebook, gdocs) or at my parents place to a certain degree.

So I may end up just doing a format tonight anyways.
Plus half the fun is the fresh start, besides, I'm quite used to the 6month reformat cycle from my windows days :-P

Obviously, the stay in the Canadian prison severely scarred him and he is just finally returning to himself. Either that, or the circumstances that revolve around Cory's failure to return. Yeah, fedora. Although if you're giving up on gentoo, you can try out Sabayon. It's like gentoo but with a binary package manager. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabayon_Linux
or if you want to go mainstream but not Ubuntu, it's Fedora.
I've got my freshly formated 64bit ext4 Ubuntu 9.04 up and running now, almost back to how it was just going though the steps trying to remember what I had installed, and what I need to re-enable. I tossed in my 2gb of extra ram I had lying around now that I'm not playing Warcraft anymore. (Stupid Wine bug crashes if you've got over 4gb ram) so 5gb of delicious rammy goodness, makes virtualbox a breeze to run now.

I agree and support the idea of Fedora, though Ubuntu is based on Debian, a distro that I've used with success in the past. I also support trying Sabayon, but I don't know your reasons for leaving Gentoo. There are always reasons to leave a distro behind, though I find that, like Democracy, any given distribution of Linux is the "worst form of government in the world -- except for all the others".

The inclusion of the ext4 file system is the big one, it means faster drive access and moving around of files along with a slightly faster boot time. Although you won't get that without a reformat.
Open Office 3.0 is included by default now which is cool.
although my favourite thing that I've found so far is they renamed "sessions" to "startup programs" common sense FTW!
EDIT: Apparently they've made the Pulse Audio work much better too.

Hrm several things.
1) Gentoo as a distro and as a group of people used to be fun. Now they bicker like a bunch of gangsters who all want to be Mr. Black and have tons of highly restrictive rules for bugzilla, mailing lists, forums, etc.
2) They spent so much time trying to attract newbies to gentoo that they made life more difficult for power uses. Now they have abandoned the "user-friendliness" and can't find a way to get back to being admin friendly. They are wedged in between both and aren't very good at either these days.
3) The lack of decent QA on packages has finally pissed me off beyond what I can accept. Breakages will happen. They need to happen a heck of a lot less than they do now.
There's more but I'll spare you.

May I suggest Sabayon? It's got most of gentoo's packages, has a binary installer by default (although you can use portage or paludis (if you're one of those)). You would likely feel much at home in this fabulous distro. All of the fun, none of the recriminations and screaming.
Or Arch, or perhaps Fedora (but the idea of using YaST makes me sick to my stomach).
Debian's good. At least their releases are macho: Lenny, Sarge arrh, I'm tough!
Mint? ubuntu clone, but none of the silly names, or blob restrictions.

A few weeks ago, I installed Linux Mint 6 KDE RC1 on my workstation (still running LM 5 KDE on my laptop) -- it was a fresh install, and without any problems... except that Kopete didn't work, and that Akonadi server continues to not work correctly.
So, yesterday I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.04 on my workstation -- again, without any problems... except that Kopete still didn't work.
OK, I created a new user, with no pre-existing KDE files (in the hope that Kopete would work). No joy; Kopete still didn't work.
So... I performed a fresh install of Linux Mint 5 KDE on my workstation, and everything (Kopete, included) works fine! and I confess that KDE/3.5.10 is still MUCH nicer than KDE/4.2.2).

RPM is the reason I'm pretty anti anything redhatish for home use. I've worked with rpm for years and it drives me batty.
YAST is another level of hell entirely.
Yep, even though Gentoo has its challenges, I'm pretty happy with portage. apt-get, though imperfect, does beat YaST and rpm. It's also worth noting that the BSDs' package management is very good, but then we'd have to fork the thread because they're not Linux and we should stay on topic...

Yeah, this whole re-foray into wine was brought on by the fact that I just missed out on the $9.99 orange box last weekend, so I figure I should try and get everything working before the next time they discount it so much.
I got it fixed by downgrading my video driver from nvidia's latest (181.51?) to the latest in Ubuntu's repo (180.41?) playing around with some xorg settings for metamodes as I run dual monitors which generally confuzes[sic) the heck out of full screen games without proper metamodes in xorg.conf. Then just deleting ~/.wine managed to fix my wine-gecko problem.
As a result of this I tested it out with World of Warcraft -still installed on my win7 partition- and went from 15-20fps with all video settings on low in 8.10 to 30-40fps with all video settings on max in 9.04 (60-90fps on low!)
And that's without any of the recommended native dlls or registry tweaks, and with compiz-fusion running.
I signed up for a 10 day free trial just to test it because I haven't played in a few months, but I was astounded by the difference, my girlfriend noted it as well.
I got Steam installed and am downloading/installing HL2 as we speak. I'm crossing my fingers that I'll have the same good luck with it as I did with WoW. The next step will be getting a friend who has the orange box to log in on my computer so that I can download and try and get TF2 working :biggrin1:

It's good to reboot every now and then though. Some patches can't be properly applied without a reboot. Thankfully, that number is far lower than a certain other OS.

Now I'm posting from Jaunty on my desktop, I've been logged in for two hours and my keyboard/mouse still work!

Nope, I used masking tape to cordon off the area I didn't want covered in caulk. After I ran the bead I pulled up the tape, smoothed it out with my finger, and voila... instant awesome. It actually looks better than the original.

I assumed you knew.. worth reading up on for next time (or now) via the man page. "dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/xxx/blahblah.iso" etc. .... there's an option IIRC to skip what it can't read but to continue on... you end up with a clone minus the bad bits. Also LXF Mag recommends cloning, fixing the clone, and then moving to a good drive... that way you're not working directly on corrupted data which might be expiring as you work.

I read an article a while ago about a pro data recovery firm that offered free service to university students in echange for any piece of school branded shwag. Their office was full of pennants and hats. We're taling hats worth $20k worth of data recovery.
The guys at the data recovery firm reasoned that it's good advertizing and whoever's master's or phd thesis they recovered wouldn't soon forget them if they ever found themselves professionally in need of data recovery.

Anyway, reading up on dd it looks like I'll have to do something to the tune of:

looks right, iirc. you may want to rethink the "sync" option tho. I recall that article mentioning it as a useful option, but then saying it might also cause some unreadable output and therefore you might do better without it. maybe try it both ways just in case?

Oh, also, if you ever do a full-disk cloning I think you need to specify strictly that you want to copy the MBR too:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1
(note that this command ONLY copies the MBR). I think that the default behavior for dd isn't to copy the MBR, but now I'm talking about cloning rather than disk recovery, so this is just a side note.

I'll run the MBR copy after just to be sure. At this point I doubt I can do more damage.
Just out of curiosity, how big is the drive you're recovering, and what brand is it?
(I have like, zero brand loyalty in harddrives, but I'm always curious what fails.)
I know for sure it's a 160GB drive because the 160GB drive I was trying to copy everything onto is slightly smaller by a few megabytes (???? !!!!! :cursing:). As for the brand, I think it's Maxtor. I'm recovering about five years worth of data but I think the drive is actually six to seven years old.

Yeah, I was going to build them a NAS anyway, may as well get started now.
Those are some nice setups for Conky, definitely going to check them out tomorrow (at the earliest...).

My upcoming saturday is now going to be devoted to virus removal/cleaning/backing up/reformatting my girlfriend's parents machine!
Apparently they've got a 500gb external drive to make my job easier... it's been sitting unopened in it's box for a year.

Yuck... At least you have a drive that can hold everything.
That's what really sucks about being "good with computers", you end up doing a lot of grunt work for relatives.

Hey, while we're in here discussing baking hard drives...
Does anybody have experience with toasters? Are they something you'd recommend over an external hard drive?

Only if warm bread is your goal, as opposed to storing electronic data.

My overall good experience with an external USB adapter was soured when I found out (the frustratingly awful way) that it doesn't support drives larger than 500 GB.
Nice planning, jackasses.
OTOH, if you have a need to rotate your storage to offsite frequently, they look like a great help.

Based on your avatar, I'd have to go with something from one of my favorite episodes of ST:TNG: Darmok.
Didn't he have a tv exercise program in the late '80s/early '90s? Oh wait, that was Gilad. My bad.
Did he film the show at Tanagra? Or Shaka (before the walls fell?)

So, let me guess... you're a tad upset by this?

After all that crap I successfully copied everything with Unstoppable Copier while I was at work. Or at least the important data was retrieved. In the meanwhile, they bought a new computer and I get to keep the old one! SCOOOOORE! So yeah, I have a new toy...
