And..Linux!

Blackfoot...it is customary AND DEMANDED...that you display flair...anything from pictures of Jen Aniston, perhaps a pole-dancing Marissa Tomei, etc. etc. at landmark posts.

You posted #6500 with no flair. Please go back, edit, and include at least 19 pieces of flair.

For examples, look at the following posts: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, all of which were primary flair points...as you are new here, and this is simply 6500, you're limited to the 19 pieces, and not required to do more...

...but for GOD'S sake man...

Blackfoot (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000098/): You know what, Tom, if you want me to wear 37 pieces of flair, like your pretty boy over there, Lynchmeister, why don't you just make the minimum 37 pieces of flair?
Tom, Chotchkie's Manager (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0431918/): Well, I thought I remembered you saying that you wanted to express yourself.
Blackfoot (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000098/): Yeah. You know what, yeah, I do. I do want to express myself, okay. And I don't need 37 pieces of flair to do it.

Speaking of building stories, here's one fresh off the boat from today. First let me set the scene:

The plumber was there doing his thing as were the HVAC guys and electricians. Light fixtures and switches are in, place is looking great, we're just walking out the door when the plumber comes in with our kitchen sink...which we hand picked ourselves and dropped off at the office of the builder.

Well, by an act of God, my ever observant wife happened to notice through a tear in the box that it was the wrong color! ...and we've got nobody but ourselves to blame. :001_rolle Fortunately, we were able to run it back and exchange it for the right one.

Whew! I may only be 27, but I feel like I'm 80 when "The House" comes into the picture. :tongue_sm

First post but I've read a large chunk of this thread... well OK, skimmed it for LINUX stuff and skipped over alot of the Cheddar Curtain parts

I've had a belly full enough now of Vista that I'm ready to take the plunge.

I held an NT4 MCSE and a current CCNA so I'm not a total noob, but noob enough to know I want a hand to hold on to before I get into the deep end.

My main concern (if I don't want to dual boot, which I don't unless I have to) regarding Linux apps would be video editing home movies of the young'uns.

I'm on an HP Pavillion 6000-something (I'm at work) desktop with a gig of RAM and a 2.2 gig 32 bit AMD processor. I have the firewire cable to upload video from a Sony Mini-DV camcorder.

I'm gathering I can handle the upload OK on Ubuntu (suppose this would be the way to go). Is there a good Linux platform for non-linear editing? Much as I detest Vista I do use the built-in video functionality quite a bit.

Thanks Cory et al for the thread. Just wading through this bad boy has been quite an experience.

Edit: Congrats on the house, your Czarness.

(a) that site is hilarious.
(b) I stand by my choice to use Gentoo, but not because I use the -O3 flags (I don't) to wring every last ounce of performance out of my machine. Maybe some day I'll really adopt RedHat/CentOS or SuSE, but for now, I know Gentoo and I like how it works. I originally started using Gentoo because it supported Sun SPARC processors and the only other contender was SuSE, whose support for SPARC CPUs frankly sucked. I could have used NetBSD (because everything runs on NetBSD (http://www.netbsd.org/about/portability.html)) but I wanted Linux.

So, my choice of Gentoo is partly path-dependent. On the other hand, I suddenly have the urge to bolt a big gold spoiler on my 1998 Mazda 626...

Make sure you get the genetically enhanced ones, otherwise they "burn out" too quickly and become costly to replace.

The mouse we use actually has two buttons, if you know the secret. It looks like a mouse with no buttons that you can just push down to click. However, if you press it on the right side, just right, there is a right button feature.

I can open every copy of the ISO I have but whether I burn it to a CD or copy it to a bootable USB stick (to save plastic trees) the thing still craps out during boot or fails the self-check.

I'll try burning it at a slower speed and see if that helps.

Well guys, I think I've come up with a newsworthy Linux post.

I've been putting some thought into how I'm going to wire the network and build the server for my new place next year and I've decided to set up Asterisk and OpenFire for internal communication and VOIP with PSTN fallback for long distance in case of emergencies and power outages. I figure if every outlet is a combination network/phone jack I should be able to splurge on some of those fancy VOIP phones that can also use POTS.

This gives me one year to figure out how the hell I'm going to get a good firewall, NAS and communications suite running smoothly. For added suffering, I've come to the conclusion that hardened Gentoo is probably the best way to go for this project.

Well, you have two options. You can either go through a reseller that will link your server to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or you can keep your own number and just use Asterisk for outgoing calls, which is what services like Vonage do and kind of how I'm planning to do it. The distinguishing feature in my setup will (hopefully) be that I can also receive calls from the net on my fancy phones.

With option 1 you buy a phone number from the company and when people call it their server picks up and bridges it to your server. With option 2, your server picks up the phone when people call your number and can go through a service like Skype or Gizmo to make outgoing calls.

OOOOH, Asterix, PBX, GENTOO (hardened, how kinky ).

That sounds like one hell of a project. I would go with FreeNAS for the NAS, it's just too stupid simple to set up and maintain. Gentoo as the main server will work good, just as long as it is fairly barebones (so you're not compiling openoffice (egads, it takes literally over 24 hours on a fast box). Firewalling will be the most interesting issue.

Yeah, the last time I tried installing Gentoo my computer was unavailable for three full days... That was on a P4 1.6Ghz. When it comes to firewalls I found IPCop to be pretty impressive but it's its own distro and it's deliberately hard/impossible to install extra stuff. Either way, the Gentoo box will be a mini-ITX based system that consumes around 5-10W under load since it'll be on all the time. The NAS I'll probably build one out of cheap/spare parts and try to keep it around 50W.

Depending on your requirements you might consider an Asus Eeebox for your gentoo box. I have been on the market for a very cheap home server for two users who almost never use a server and I keep coming back to Asus Eeebox as the cheapest/best solution. Just don't have 300 sheckels at the moment that the wife will permit to be invested in somewhat unnecessary technology.

Wahoo! Alphabet soup, TLAs (and FLAs) and nerdy outputs galore!

First: installing Gentoo isn't as hard or as time consuming as it once was. Second: installing Gentoo is still not for the weak or unwilling.
Third: Asterisk is neat but you probably should have a real number on the PSTN rather than a pseudo-phone--in that case, how is it different from Skype? Fourth: FreeNAS is okay, and probably the best of breed (until you get up to a Drobo, but that's a big price jump). Unfortunately FreeNAS is currently puking its guts out trying to run on my Atom motherboard; no clue why but the little BSD is not happy booting to my PATA CF adapter and I can't really do what I want to do with it, unlike when I was running on my tepid old P3/733/512MB, when I could do what I wanted -- except add SATA drives...

If you want Gentoo help, I'll consult, or ssh in to assist.

Well, I'm sure I can get Gentoo running... I did it once before so I should be able to do it again. Worst case, I'll hook you up with ssh access.

The Asterisk box will handle long distance calling, voicemail, internal intercom, and hold music (because that's just awesome). There will definitely be a regular phone line in case of power outages and server crashes from excessive tweaking. I just figured since every phone jack will also have a network jack, why not get the fancy phones?

I probably will go with FreeNAS... just not sure in what capacity. I'd like either RAID 4, 5 or 6. I dunno, I'll look into that later...
