I toyed with the idea of starting a "Windows XP" thread...

...let's just say I royally bungled up my laptop. I was putzing around last night and found myself inside the windows disk partitioner (which, I'll add, I have no experience with). I found the broken Linux partition of about 5GB and thought I'd just wipe it out because I needed the space on the windows side (long story). Well, I wiped it out no problem...then it was "unallocated." I couldn't figure out how to allocate it to C:\ and shrugged it off thinking it would do it automatically upon reboot. Happy in my ignorance, I continued to work without a reboot. Needless to say, this wouldn't be the case.

Fast forward to this morning...busy day ahead of me dealing with builders, cabinet makers, electricians, etc. I start the computer...GRUB 17 error...WTF! Uh oh...I broke Grub and Linux is gone...shit...can't get into windows...

I was extemely fortunate to have recently found all of my Windows recovery disks.

Disks in hand, I attempted to first repair the windows partition. Ok, no problem. Reboot. Grub 17 error. D'Oh!

After mulling over what I would (in reality, it was probably already too late) lose, I grit my teeth and did a complete reformat and install.

Ok...now, let's get the internet going. Nope. I tried floundering through the GUI without success before I went online on the Linux box. Ok...I have no drivers. No problem, I have the driver disk. Popped it in, did what I thought was installing the drivers, rebooted, tried to access the internet. No go.

In between loads of laundry (laundering the dogs' pillows and blankets after an unfortunate...accident...involving a very excited vizsla and some dinner guests), I managed to spill half of my coffee on the freshly laundered dog pillow. :censored: Blood boiling, I pressed on.

In a stroke of brilliance (and after looking around for eye witnesses), I cracked open the manual for my laptop. Apparently, I didn't install the drivers like I thought I had. Two minutes later, I manually installed the ethernet driver, and shortly thereafter I was able to pop in here and report my progress.

Now. Wireless. Heh, it seems we've come full circle again...only this time I'm spinning the sad tale of Micro$oft Window$.

Okie, short list of options. Get a boot disk that has fdisk on it and run fdisk /mbr or get into the Windows recovery console via an install cd and run fdisk /mbr. That should get things going.

It will not, however, be as cheap as Williams.

Here's what I will propose for the scents:

"Rich" - Lime Oil
"Tom" - Unscented
"Chip" - Peppermint and Eucalyptus (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpost.php?p=592887&postcount=23)
"Jesse" - Bayberry

And...

"Ray" - Lavender (I mean, you really should see his collection of lip balms and facial care products...even Mrs. Burnwood calls him a girl)
But I hate lavender!!!!!!!!! I either want Rich's lime oil or Bayberry or peppermint and euc. I will fess up to the being called a girl, but a girl who hates floral scents.
The Green Mountain shave round makes an excellent superlather combo. Alas it is Tom scented.

I've tried PuppyLinux - MacPup, to be precise, but it locks up when I try to run GParted.
What other distros might I consider for these pieces of crap machines?

I had a very passable Gentoo (ahem) "recon box" for network and vulnerability testing with 5 NICs in it powered by a 550 MHz P3 and 256 MB of RAM running Gnome 2.x in 2004-2005. I'm sure you can scavenge enough RAM to make them usable with XFCE on Gentoo or Puppy Linux. BTW -- dd is your friend here; make a good, usable machine image and then roll it out to the rest with dd. The only catch I found is that you may need to tinker with the NIC IDs after imaging.

I look out my window, and there's JEN, peering in.

I go to work, and Jen is under the desk in my cube...I have to call security...it's SO embarrassing!

OK, Ubuntu wireless question on the way.... avert your eyes!

I recently got rid of my windows 7 partition, and instead of going back to Mandriva, I decided to attempt an Ubuntu install, and I can't seem to get my wireless card to work. I was under the impression at RaLink wireless cards were supported natively in Ubuntu? Apparently not.

I've tried the linux driver from RaLink, the windows driver with ndiswrapper, and nothing. When I run "lspci -v", it recognizes the card as a RaLink 0781 card, and the correct subsystem. When I run "ndiswrapper -l", it says that the driver is loaded, and that the correct device is present.

The problem is that despite that, the card still isn't recognized.... If I run "lshw -C network", under the correct PCI slot, the wireless card is listed as being the correct manufacturer, but I get the line saying "*-network UNCLAIMED, RaLink, etc...".

Does anybody have any idea what the "network UNCLAIMED" line means in lshw? iwconfig, ifcongig, iwlist all come back with nothing. Oh, and I sudo'ed all the commands too.

Anyone? Bueller?

Mrs. Chip's much-loved laptop broke down over the weekend and she wanted to do some work in the living room rather than in the office. I fired up my old laptop (that weighs as much as a desktop) and put Jaundiced Jackalope on it. The verdict? She didn't hate it!

The only thing that bugged her was that I was hovering around trying to explain everything despite knowing and admitting that she knew how to do it all already or was able to figure it out on her own.

If Windows 7 doesn't pan out and we can't get another copy of XP, she'll probably switch to Ubuntu out of sheer, venomous hatred for Vista.

Yeah, that's going to have to be the next step. The funny thing is that just yesterday I was reading some comments on /. specifically about right-clicking in Firefox in Linux and then when I got home we ran into the issue.

Worst case, I just install opera. It's an old laptop anyway, so it would benefit from something a little more lightweight.

So, back to Linux for a moment...

Has anyone ever experienced weird quirks running Firefox native in Ubuntu? Specifically when right-clicking? Every time we right-click in Firefox on the laptop running 9.04 it bookmarks the page rather than displaying a menu. I'm half ready to use Wine to install the Windows version instead.

I haven't had this issue, but using FF in Mint, occasionally it will inexplicably go back to the page I was previously viewing. I do believe it also happens with a right click, but can't say for certain until it happens again.

Just here to say the brain transplant was a success. This new case (Antec 900) is awesome btw. My CPU/motherboard temps dropped by 15&#176;C and I thought my hard drives all crashed because I can't hear a single one.

I managed to route a lot of the cabling behind the motherboard and will try to find shorter/prettier SATA cables to clean things up further. I have to give props to Antec for designing this case because it really is easy to fit everything in and make it look clean. The funny thing is that this thing gets such good airflow it's actually lowering the ambient temperature in my office and creating a very pleasant breeze.

All in all, I have to give this case nine thumbs up.

Edit: Oh yeah... good cablegami really adds to the build time of a system. Normally I can build and test a rig in 45 minutes, this one took a little over four hours. Totally worth it though.

Tips for Crossing the Canada/US Border

The Canada / US border is reputed to be the friendliest border in the world. Below are a few guidelines to help make your crossing as quick and easy as possible. With the current increase in security concerns it still generally takes less than 1/2 hour to cross the border. It is possible however to meet with longer border crossing delays, especially at peak crossing times. For current border crossing times follow these links.

When crossing the border you may be asked to show proof of citizenship such as birth, voter's, naturalization certificate or passport. If the identification does not have a picture ID you may be asked to provide this as well. A drivers license is generally sufficient for picture ID but is not proof of citizenship by itself. Photocopies of any identification are not acceptable and may initiate more thorough investigation.

What you mean you're not going to mod the PSU yourself to make it modular?

Back in the day (2001-2004) my PSU mods were my proudest accomplishments. Nothing quite like throwing a window and a bunch of LEDs into your PSU and boring out the molex connectors to accommodate a bright blue LED in each one.

I've always wanted to do a window mod but I don't think I'd ever be able to go so far as to modularize the cables. The closest I've come is to a PSU mod is sleeving the cables, but I did it properly at least. I removed all the connectors and used heat shrink from an automotive store and a lighter on both ends of the cable to make sure everything stayed in place.

I'll be drilling some holes in the back plate of my new case sometime during the next week to hide cables and salvage my street cred.

You've generally got to buy one from a domain name seller, they generally run about $8-10/year that will be your [email protected] or whatever.
Also unless you've got a static IP it's probably not the best idea to run your own mail server. You would have to check with your ISP if your IP is static or not.

Hmm...so I couldn't do my own (free) webhosting with an apache server setup?

What's the danger of not having a static IP?

Confuzius
03-09-2009, 01:36 PM
You could do your own free web hosting, but your address would be something like http://216.239.51.104 and not http://www.mycoolsite.com

A domain name translates the numbers into something generally legible.

You're ip address is kind of like your real address, if it's static. If it's not static it's a mobile home that randomly gets moved around and the post office and your friends can never find you because your address keeps changing.

EDIT: If you've got an always-on internet, like cable chances are you might be able to keep the same IP for a month or so at a time, even with a non-static ip. If you're on DSL or Dial-up there's a very high chance it will change every time you connect to the internet.

That being said, there's no harm familiarizing yourself with these things, I run apache to host a testbed for websites that I'm working on so I can test stuff out before it goes "live".

Although unless you're just sending e-mail from one computer on your network to another a mail server with a non-static ip would get frustrating.

EDIT: If you want you can get a free "temporary" domain name here http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ it may be able to help out some of the problems normally associated with a dynamic ip (that's the word I should have been using instead of non-static, but I was having a mental block)

So question time:

I'm having some trouble with my Apache server. It's up and running and in fact I can navigate to the default page, but when I try to set up my own virtual host, I run into a problem. Here are the instructions I'm following from this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP:

Virtual Hosts

Apache2 has the concept of sites, which are separate configuration files that Apache2 will read. These are available in /etc/apache2/sites-available. By default, there is one site available called default this is what you will see when you browse to http://localhost (http://localhost/) or http://127.0.0.1 (http://127.0.0.1/). You can have many different site configurations available, and activate only those that you need.
As an example, we want the default site to be /home/user/public_html/. To do this, we must create a new site and then enable it in Apache2.
To create a new site:

Copy the default website as a starting point. sudo cp /etc/apache2/sites-available/default /etc/apache2/sites-available/mysite
Edit the new configuration file in a text editor "sudo nano" on the command line or "gksudo gedit", for example: gksudo gedit /etc/apache2/sites-available/mysite
Change the DocumentRoot to point to the new location. For example, /home/user/public_html/
Change the Directory directive, replace <Directory /var/www/> to <Directory /home/user/public_html/>
You can also set separate logs for each site. To do this, change the ErrorLog and CustomLog directives. This is optional, but handy if you have many sites
Save the file

Now, we must deactivate the old site, and activate our new one. Ubuntu provides two small utilities that take care of this: a2ensite (apache2enable site) and a2dissite (apache2disable site).

sudo a2dissite default && sudo a2ensite mysiteFinally, we restart Apache2:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
If you have not created /home/user/public_html/, you will receive an warning message
To test the new site, create a file in /home/user/public_html/:

echo '<b>Hello! It is working!</b>' > /home/user/public_html/index.htmlFinally, browse to http://localhost/

So I do all this and am met with the warning I highlighted in red above. If I'm not mistaken, just a few lines above, it instructed me to create /home/user/public_html/, so this left me scratching my head. I consulted the almighty Google, but came out on the other side the same as I went in. Any ideas guys? I'm so close, I can taste it!

Edit: Also worth mentioning is that I have set up port forwarding on my router for port 80 and when I navigate to http://localhost I get this error:

Not Found

The requested URL / was not found on this server.
Apache/2.2.4 (Ubuntu) Server at localhost Port 80

Hmm...I didn't actually put anything there as it is the apache default, but yes, I can see what it there. I don't recall what exactly the message is, but it's something to the effect of, "It's working OK."

Sucks, don't it. I just hang around for when it is off topic. I don't know the first thing about Linux. Like the Commodore 64, it is probably great except the world refuses to embrace it. That is more than I should know.

I never bother with setting up the "/home/user/public_html" and just put a link on my desktop that points to "gksudo nautilus /var/www" and edit all my webpage stuff from there. Works plenty well for me.

Although I might give it a shot today or tomorrow to see if I can help you out.

My first computer was a 64. My uncle is a programmer or engineer, whatever his title is. he gave it to us because my dad thought computers were the anti-Christ (his actual words). It was old when we got it. I loved the box of paper all connected. Obviously,my uncle had an up-to-date computer, if there is such a thing. But he always kept a 64 up, too. He might even still have one tucked away somewhere.

I love how the guys tenaciously trying to stay on topic keep going, ignoring our useless side-jaunt. I enjoy seeing two conversations going on at the same time.

Sounds great, Jordan. I'll see if I can do the same and am anxious to see if you can get the other deal to work. It may be a few days, though, because despite these being my typical days off, I'm actually at work taking a web based JCL course...and some of you guys think the Commodore is archaic! This stuff actually did use punch cards and (unfortunately?) most of the terminology from the era stuck.

Success installing the new fan/heatsink on the video card. Between that and the new case the temperature of my CPU has dropped by 10°C, my case temp has dropped by 15°C and my GPU temp has dropped by a whopping 20°C.
