I need a Festivus Miracle...I haven't bought a thing for SWMBO...thought of Yoga Toes...but can't get it shipped on time...she's a great woman (puts up with me) but very hard to "pigeon hole"...any ideas?

What are the rest of you guys getting? Maybe I'll get her a Linux disk...where?

I might get some Atari games...maybe Space Invaders...

Get her two player games and give her the bad controller whenever you let her join you.

Has anyone tried using a bootable USB install of any linux? (I'm spesifically thinking ubuntu)

I usually use Cory's Ethernet cable for these applications.

But you might try this:
Download the Live CD KDE (685MB) ISO, burn to a CD and start your system from the CD
Once SUSE is up and running, insert your USB Hard Drive
When prompted that a new medium has been detected, select the option to Do Nothing and check the box to Always do this for this type of media then click OK

Next, click the My Computer icon from your SUSE desktop
Locate your USB device from the Disk Information section on the page
Right click on the device and select to Safely Remove

Right click on the device again, this time select Properties

From the Properties window that appear, click the Mounting tab
Uncheck the Mount automatically box and click OK

Next, start the installer via the install icon on your desktop and follow the onscreen instructions. You can click Cancel to any pop ups notifying you of newly detected media
Once the installer has finished, reboot your computer. Remove the CD from the drive and proceed to boot from the USB device.
Continue the onscreen setup process… users and passwords etc
Once your up and running again, press alt+f2 and type konsolesu then press Enter
Type wget pendrivelinux.com/downloads/portablesuse.tar.gz
Type tar -zxvf *.tar.gz
Type ./installation and follow the onscreen instructions answering y to all of the questions
Type reboot to reboot and ensure that everything is still working
That concludes this Portable SUSE how to tutorial. You should now be able to run your Portable SUSE from any PC that can boot from a USB device. It should be safe to re-attach any internal drives to your PC.

Always happy to help!

Hey...Seriously-- Cory's about to get this house going. I suggested in the other thread (Home buying) that this summer I bring my big-ass tent up, we all converge there, and have an Amish-like Deck Building party. I think it would be a helluva way to spend a weekend...

...we could set up a long counter-like thing with buckets of hot water and we'd all shave, then we'd put on our shirts, work on the deck, wait for Cory's Ribs to be cooked, eat some, smoke a pipe or two, build the deck some more, smash up his computer, kick his dogs and be crass around the missus.

Sounds like a GREAT time...let's plan on it. I know Dennis would do it, and I'm sure SWMBO would LOVE it if I were out of her hair for a weekend. And poor Cory will need a deck.

This is a great idea. I could get away for a few days (maybe) one weekend if Mrs. Soapbox has a trip home or something planned. Once Cory gets the deck built (and, you know, if I meet all y'all and decide I can stand to be around the lot of you for a weekend), start proposing weekends. Too bad I can't bring my framing tools in my luggage (my beloved 4-foot level doesn't fit well...), but I could at least bring a cordless drill!

Is it possible to have 2 partitions on a 4gb usb stick?

Mr. Gillette
12-23-2008, 01:52 PM
Is it possible to have 2 partitions on a 4gb usb stick?

GOOD QUESTION! FINALLY ON SUBJECT. I HAVE A FEW THOUGHTS ON THIS...HOPE IT HELPS!!! FESTIVUS IS A BLESSED TIME!

I wanted several operating systems on a USB stick and after many hours messing with syslinux, memdisk, grub4dos, xosl, freedos, avlgomgr, acronis os selector, ranish partition manager. I have succumbed. I first started out wanting to boot an iso off USB and ran into trouble loading large img with memdisk which I found out is due to a bug in msdos so I used freedos but things didn’t work out as planned and it’s a similar woe story’s with the rest. Acronis os selector lets you boot multiple os from one partition from different folders but don’t work great when it comes to dos.

I have 5 partitions on my USB stick and using the boot loader BootIt NG http://www.bootitng.com/bootitng.html This is a 30 day trial. There’s a iso boot image inside the zip you need to burn to cd.

Now I wasn’t happy just putting one os on my USB stick. I wanted linux and diagnostic tools etc.

I now have what I think is the easiest helpful solution below.

Stage 1.

Ok XP can only see one partition on a removable USB but if change the USB driver to a fixed disk driver then XP will see it as a hard drive then we can have lay down multiple partitions as we like. Now open regedit and goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBST OR
and double click on USBSTORE and you see a subkey below it, select the first subkey below USBSTORE and right click and select Copy Key Name

Here is mine, yours maybe different.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBST OR\Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_Flash_Disk&Rev_0.00

Now we need only need this part:

USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_Flash_Disk&Rev_0.00

Copy and paste it temporarily into notepad.

You will now need this driver. http://www.xpefiles.com/viewtopic.php?t=92
Unpack it to a folder on your desktop. Inside the folder is the file cfadisk.inf. You need to open this file and scroll down to you see the line %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install, specific data
Now you need to replace all lines %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install, specific data with
the line you copied from your registry like so.

%Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_Flash_Disk&Rev_0.00

There could be more lines so replace all and save the file.

Goto Device Manager and click on disk drives. You see your USB listed, dbl click on it and goto the driver tab and click update driver and install from a specific location and choose the driver to install and click on Have Disk and browse to the cfadisk.inf file your modified driver on your desktop and force that to replace your existing driver. It might ask you to reboot. You should now have your USB showing as Local Disk

We want your first partition dos bootable so run HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. I’m using version 2.1.8. Select your drive letter of your USB device and select "Create a DOS startup disk" and browse to your 98 boot disk folder. Click Start. Your USB will be formatted and 3 files will be copied from your dos startup files. You need to manually copy the rest of the 98 boot files to your USB drive.

You can now resize the drive (mines 512MB) and create multiple partitions. All partition software now sees it as a fixed disk. I used acronis disk director and resized the partition keeping the first dos bootable partition intact and made another 4 fat partitions so I had 5 in total.

Make sure your format all partitions as Primary not Logical.

I now make all the os for each drive on my USB, so for example I copy all linux files to the root of I: and then syslinux I:

G: Dos bootable drive
H: BartPE2USB
I: Dsl Linux
J: UBCD
K: Partition Tools

So this way makes it easy to load multiple iso using ramdisk also.

Stage 2

Insert your BootIt NG cd you made earlier and your USB stick and reboot and change your bios to boot from cd and disable all hard drives from your bios so they not detected, that way you wont delete any hard drive data and you know your using the USB only. You can now install BootIt onto your USB stick. This is a simple install. It install on the first partition. It will detect all partitions. You can now add the partitions easily. Your USB shows up as HD0 and the separate partitions as MBR 1, 2 ,3 ,4 5 etc and boot from each one from the menu.

BootIt is not free. I am using this till i can workout a freeware solution.

EDIT: Here comes the better freeware solutions.

I going to explain simple easy way that works, on how to create a bartpe and dos dual-boot on an USB stick install each on separate partitions including a menu to select either. I will use 2 partitions for now.

Download spfdisk it’s a good boot loader which has many features and is free.
http://spfdisk.sourceforge.net/Spf2K3rE.exe We will be using this. Unpack it. You need 1 file only from it, spfdisk.exe.

Plan how much space to split up for dos and bartpe. Delete all your USB stick so it’s unallocated space and then create 2 partitions of fat to the size you need and format. Make the first partition dos.

Acquire or make a dos bootable cd or floppy and put spfdisk.exe on it. Make sure you match the dos version of your boot disk to same version of dos system files you be using on your usb.

Copy dos, ghost whatever files to your dos partititon and copy your bartpe files to the bartpe partititon.

Check you have the 2 files mkbt.exe & pe2usb.bin in your pebuilder folder. Download Pe2usb if not.
Open up a cmd box in your pebuilder dir and run the command:

“mkbt.exe -x pe2usb.bin N:” N being the letter of your bartpe partition.

Reboot and keep your USB stick in and boot off the dos cd or floppy.

Type the command sys drive: drive being the letter of your dos partititon.

Run spfdisk.exe in dos Create the menu to boot both partitions in spfdisk. Save the changes.

Reboot, take out your cd and boot up off the USB and its working.

Alternative method using WinGrub for multiboot usb

Download Wingrub http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=104188

Have the partitions formatted to fat.

Install WinGrub. Insert your USB stick

Note: Your usb stick partitions will be hd0,0 and hd0,1 when you boot on startup but will be different under windows, not showing as the first drive.

First time you rub Wingrub you see a box pop up called base setup. Click the drive letter of your USB stick and click Ok. Make sure its your USB stick you click and not your hard drive. In Wingrub right click in the menu table and click edit and paste the menu data below over the existing data in the edit box and click ok. now save it as a new name ending in .lst - If you need that menu again load it back in. You need to make a folder on your usb called boot and inside that another folder called grub and then copy your menu.lst to that folder.

timeout 30
color=white/blue

title Dos Utils
unhide (hd0,0)
hide (hd0,1)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
makeactive
boot

title BartPE
hide (hd0,0)
unhide (hd0,1)
rootnoverify (hd0,1)
chainloader +1
makeactive
boot

Now in tools menu click Install Grub. You going to install grub to the MBR. Now click the partition letter of your first partition of your USB stick then click install. 2 files have copied to your partition and your mbr is now patched with grub. How easy is that, no use of a disk editor needed. The original mbr is saved in the file MBR.ORG on your usb. You can now reboot test your usb stick and use the grub menu.

Christmas Eve here...almost noon. I guess the rest of you are either (1) still shaving (2) trying to partition a USB stick (3) hung over from Festivus, or all of the above.

For me? Working this AM, almost done, then where the "REAL WORK" starts, keeping awake through 2 church services, where someone pokes me in the ribs and says "Make the choir sing now." Such is Christmas for me...push it into the morning, past midnight, and light candles singing "Silent Night.' (YAWWWN).

But in between, this afternoon...pleasant times with a fire in the fireplace, some good eats (Shrimps, shrimp cocktail, boled shrimp, shrimp scampi, shrimp souffle, shrimp sauce, breaded shrimp...) cookies, fruit, etc.

Anyway-- whatever it is, I just wanted to leave one word with you...something to celebrate the holidays with...

GOD...I miss those Christmases with Jen, when she'd pull me back under the covers and say...

Anyway-- whatever it is, I just wanted to leave one word with you...something to celebrate the holidays with...

Linux.

GOD...I miss those Christmases with Jen, when she'd pull me back under the covers and say...

...Linux.

...Not a Linux was stirring, not even a wireless mouse...

...Tales of partitioned USB memory sticks danced in their heads...

Merry Christmas everyone.

Yep, JCL. Our (large) mainframe is partioned into 5 LPARs (logical partitions) and JCL is our bread and butter. I agree it's very archaic and, in fact, much of the terminalogy surrounding it is from the old punch card days.

Mr. Gillette regrets that family considerations compel him to be elsewhere over this Holiday weekend. DAMMMMIT...

I would have addressed the group on the topic of what Candy-Asses the younger generation have become...what perfect little "Nancy Boys", who can't get up, chop a hole in the ice, dip out a bucket of water, chop some wood, warm the water up on the wood stove, slaughter a sheep, render the tallow, press it into a cake of soap, trap a badger, tie a knot in his tail, whip up some soap and get a BBS shave before getting on the road by 5 AM. I have a few things to say on that level...

...AND WE LIKED it.

Superdawg is entirely fun. It's EXTREMELY Chicago!!!!!!! But I thought Soapbox was going to Chez Paul...????

Have a great time...if all are around on Sunday, and you're not going to church, or the Bears Game...I'll be back on this side of the pond.

And remember...only a candy ass would eat inside at Superdawg...take one of the picnic benches and enjoy the experience. The litte SoapBox Jr...the one exception!!!

Go somewhere on the site and find your hosts/ask a question or whatever...I don't remember...but I think Joel fixed me up. Say something REAL NICE about Ouch (who is a sensitive and caring man) and they'll do it for you.

As for the ceremony...those are the things that make the veterans of us sit around for the rest of our life and tell the story.

The difference between that story and a fairy tale: (1) your story actually happened-- it's so utterly stupid and self-serving, that OF COURSE it happened, inconveniencing 1000 people to soothe the fragile egos of a couple of lame-ass CO's. (2) The fairy tale would begin "once upon a time" and this would begin.."Now this ain't no sh*t..."

Thanks for making me laugh!!!!
:lol::lol:

Meh, I know I'm a veteran and anyone who read my story knows it too, that's good enough for me.

Ah yes, those brief moments of laughter, terror, or disgust separated only by minutes, hours and days of boredom. Those are the times from which the greatest stories emanate. Those hours of nothingness in between are simply the times you wish you were a civilian.

Here's one of my favorite jokes about the military. What's the difference between Boy Scouts and the Army? The Boy Scouts have adult leadership.

Glad I could bring a bit of amusement to your day. You've done it for me often enough.

Well, I just got done playing around with the Mandriva 2009 cd. It looks cool, aside from the Pink Floyd motif, but as per the norm, I ran into display and internet issues. The resize and rotate tool proved worthless since everything was greyed out. Even if I wanted to resize or rotate, it wouldn't let me. As for the internet, well, I have several tricks up my sleeve for the wireless if I ever get to that point. More than likely, though, I'll install on the desktop as that has been the guinea pig computer. KDE 4.x looks really cool, but from the sounds of it, it's still pretty buggy. At this point, I wouldn't know since I barely got out of the chute , but what I did see looked cool, so between the chaos of building a home, working, being married , and keeping three crazy pets under control, we'll see how far I get.

It looks like it wants you to reconfigure the package manager. Entering the following in a terminal window should get you going:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

easy answer, pick one: a) you broke it OR b) ya did something wrong.

seriously.... did you stick "sudo" in front of the dpkg command? That's the problem 99% of the time.. also, did you do as the error suggested and what happened?

It looks like it wants you to reconfigure the package manager. Entering the following in a terminal window should get you going:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Let us know what happens and good luck!

easy answer, pick one: a) you broke it OR b) ya did something wrong.

seriously.... did you stick "sudo" in front of the dpkg command? That's the problem 99% of the time.. also, did you do as the error suggested and what happened?

could be normal... depending on your mobo. it should be fine for the hardware, but remember that linux likes to be left on (designed that way). But, you won't harm anything by shutting down as needed (esp. with a laptop set up). for a desktop or server... just leave it on and linux is very happy.

Hey guys. As to all the worry about power consumption with electronic devices. DON'T WORRY. This is one of the most over hyped things going. Believe me guys, as an industrial electrician, I see things that CONSUME power. Home electronics are not it. I get a real kick out of articles that say things like; that 550w power supply x so much usage = x amount of dollars in cost per year. This is not exactly true. The supply is rated for x amount of available wattage. This does not mean it consumes it all the time. Hard drives(motors) and the display take more juice than just about any other piece or your hardware. I suspect when hard drives are idling along and you are not doing any processor intensive work the pc is probably hard pressed to consume as much power as a 100w light bulb. If pc power supplies are like anything else, that rating is max or maybe even for bursts of power but usually not sustained consumption. In fact the higher the sustainable wattage, usually the better built and more efficient the p/s is. Which means it runs cooler and well, more efficiently. Especially at lower wattages.

Heat, in the form of both resistance and ambient temperature, is the number one issue with efficiency. It is why I am investigating an external power supply for the set top box I am daydreaming about. I am just not sure how to interface it to the mobo or innards of the box itself. Most printers and laptops come with a "power brick" that connects to the electronics with a small polarised plug. This would allow for a very short case height in my project. Well I guess I am sort of meandering here but just keep this in mind. My home electricity bill runs about $60-65 per month during the winter/spring. It is only when I turn on the a/c unit that it doubles the costs. Pumps, motors, resistance heaters(think elements in your electric oven or water heater) and incandescent lighting(which is resistive elements) ALL consume much greater power than the average piece of home electronics. In other words, test all the Linux distros you can!

Regards, Todd

Hey Todd.

Simplistic answer first:
XFCE: best for lower-end hardware. Few frills.

Gnome: best balance of efficiency, eye candy and usability. Simple, basic, but with lots of add-ons. Looks more like Mac OS 9 than XFCE or KDE.

KDE: most eye candy. Most hardware requirements (i.e. more parasitic on the CPU and GPU). Looks more like Windows XP.

I use Gnome because of the balance. If I really wanted to utterly maximize performance, I'd use XFCE or Fluxbox (or any of those derivatives), but Puppy and Damn-Small-Linux both have poor GUIs and I like eye candy a little, but I don't need/want Compiz since I don't need to have my Desktop wobble and shake (er, unless I'm on my Mac...).

Really...yes. At idle, your machine will still use around 80-100 watts (that's a really rough guesstimate). Some machines will use 30-40, and some will use 150. A really powerful graphics card can use 240 when it's at wide-open throttle--and some gaming rigs have two of those. Power-efficient hard drives use 8-10 watts.

Really efficient power supplies will blunt the impact of a powerful system and are worth a look, long term.

Hey guys - Here's the low down. My wife is a digital camera freak. I spent a great deal of time last night backing up, moving, and organizing several hundreds of digital photos that were taken over the holidays and found their way onto both sides of the PC.

After that, I got Virtual Box up and running, booted up the Mint 6 .iso and was met with some success. I say some because, I did see the Linux Mint splash screen and boot menu, but after that, it just sits at the black screen with simply "loading..." in the upper left corner.

I checked out the CPU usage while this was going on and it was pegged at 100%. I'm almost certain that Virtual Box and the .iso file are fine and it's just a case of my computer not having enough resources available to run both XP and VB. I'm going to give it a shot on the Linux, but that will be after I do a fresh install of either 6.0 Gnome or 5.0 Gnome. Mint KDE 5.0 is just taxing the system resources too much for me to even bother with it prior to the install.

Why do you torture yourself so. Just load Ubuntu and be done with it.

P.S. I am posting this from the waiting room at the Walter Reed ICU. For those of you that care, please pray for my sister as she is on the razor's edge right now with a blood clot in her lungs.

I just burned and tried the Mint 6.0 LiveCD, but was met with a boot error on the desktop PC. Not sure what the cause is, be it the hardware or software, but I'll give the disc a shot on the laptop to see if I can't narrow things down a bit.

Oh crap! I'm so sorry to hear that. I don't know where you're staying or with whom, but if you need a break, Walter Reed is a short hop from my house or a 40-minute Metro ride to my workplace -- we can do lunch or dinner if you like.

Nah, my laptop runs OS X. For everyday use, it's my choice. For serious computational grunt, I use Linux, since performance-equivalent hardware is cheaper than a new Mac; and I use Linux for MythTV for the same reason.

Thanks guys. They just took the breathing tube out today and she is having a hard time breathing. I'm back at my sister's in Virginia. My mom just called in a panic, so it isn't sounding good. I will be heading back to Walter Reed for the night, right after dinner with my nephew.

Hey guys,

Well I was wrong about the breathing tube, it will stay in until at least tomorrow. I got the crap scared out of me this morning when they called a Code Blue to my sister's ward. I bolted up from my chair and got there before the code team. It turned out it was a different patient and he is doing well now.

I appreciate all the prayers. She needs them in a major way.

OK, back to the regular silliness. There's no Linux here, I have to use windoze. We also got a People magazine from the Red Cross with our other mascot, Jennifer, on the cover.

Later.

Ubuntu's support forums are really amazing, I agree. I'm finding some of the cracks or gaps in Ubuntu lately, though. I'm trying to install some from-source software (http://grass.osgeo.org) on a laptop, and I'm getting weird errors and loading up the dependencies is a royal pain, and the software compiles and runs but segfaults. A lot.

I think Ubuntu is great -- and I've had great results with it on other machines -- but I may erase this laptop and start over with Gentoo or Debian. 'Cause, you know, I want to waste a weekend on it...

What I really need is a new, gnarly, quad-core desktop number-cruncher, and then I can quit trying to distribute my number-crunching (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/hpc-howto.xml) across multiple machines.

Yeah, gotta agree on this, Ubuntu support is nice but Gentoo is king for docs/forum support.

If you never want to have an unsolvable problem again with linux, take a weekend (long weekend maybe) and do a stage 3 install on a spare partition. You will curse me at first, but love me in a year. Trust me.

Then once the fun of compiling has worn off, you will want to try Sabayon (gentoo but with binary package manager and other helpful tweaks).

Actually I think the Ubuntu binaries might be part of my problem. Building from source on Gentoo -- despite the time involved -- has probably avoided more problems than I have suffered through because of compile problems. There's no real way to "win" this one, though an early build of Hardy Heron did everything I wanted (on a core quad desktop I had on loan for a while). Maybe it's the laptop; maybe it's the distro; maybe Gentoo would be a waste on that laptop. Thus, <whine>I want a new core quad machine</whine>.

Hey...it was nice of you or Cory to send me this list of how to speak sconsin good. Thanks..I'll practice, eh? Doncha know...

General Usage Terms

There are certain terms which crop up in all conversations; these can add a distinct flavor or “patois” to the English language as used by Wisconsinites. While subtle, these expressions add much to any conversation.

Eh? – A general addition to almost any sentence, allowing the sentence to end in a gentle question form, to which the other conversant can respond in a variety of ways. See also “’n so?” Pronounced like “hay” but without the “h” sound, with a level or rising tone, depending on how strong a response is required to the statement just made.

‘N so? – Used almost interchangeably with “eh?”, but perhaps requiring a more definitive agreement or disagreement on the part of the responder. It is essentially a contraction of the phrase “Isn’t that so?”. Pronounced as a very nasal “en SEW?” with a rising tone.

How’s by you? – A general, but friendly greeting among friends or acquaintances, meaning “How are things going with you these days?”, which is far too long a statement by Wisconsin standards.

Interesting – Wisconsin folks try to be nice and not insult or disparage or embarrass other people, their habits, their fashion sense or their cooking. Therefore, you will almost never hear things like, “That casserole really tastes bad!” However, you WILL hear things like, “Dat venison has got a really interesting flavor to it”, or, ”Dat’s a really interesting blouse you got on dere”. Be advised: this is generally NOT a compliment!

Okay? – Used at the end of sentences similarly to “eh?” or “’n so?”, but usually used when a more forceful agreement or concurrence by the listener is desired or required. Used in statements to reinforce an important point (“You be real careful dere wid dat chain saw, okay?”), or to express some degree of frustration or exasperation, as in, “Johnny, you still didn’t clean out da barn like I asked ya ta do this mornin’, so go do it now, okay?”

One time – A modifying phrase which can mean past, present or even future time events. Used in a variety of contexts and circumstances, but usually refers to a specific action to differentiate it from a regular event or series of occurrences. As in, “I was goin’ up dat hill one time dere when da deer come right over on me! I couldn’t even get a shot off, ya know?”

Ya know? – Used similarly to usage throughout the country, but perhaps this expression started here. Often used as a mild request for agreement about a declaration, as in “Dat new Chevy pickup’s sure got some neat stuff in da cab dere, ya know?” May be used occasionally at the start of a sentence to confirm the listener’s familiarity with some fact, but almost never used in the middle of a sentence. Strong nasal tone required, especially on the “know”.

Getting Around

There are a few things you need to know about traveling in Wisconsin, and some special terms and signage that you may not run across elsewhere. Particularly when asking directions, be alert for certain phrases which may require explanation.

55, 65, etc. – Speed limits. These can be STRICTLY ENFORCED, so watch your driving.

I-51, US-2, WIS-57, US-141 – State and federal highways are designated by numbers, just like everywhere else. No big deal.

AA, AB, Z, WWW – County highways in Wisconsin are designated by letters, not numbers. This may be unique to Wisconsin. At county lines, the same road will typically carry the same letter designation into the next county, but not always, so be alert.

By – This term is used in a unique way in Wisconsin. In most English usage, it means either to go near to a place, or to move past a place. While these meaning are also used in Wisconsin, there is an additional, distinct interpretation of the word. In proper context, it means that you are going TO a place AND you will stop in and visit when you get there. Thus, the sentence “I’m going over by Johnny’s house” means that you are going there and you are also going to play with Johnny as well.

Chicago – Huge city in Illinois, home of the ‘da Bears”, the ugly, degenerate NFL football team most hated by true Packer fans. The name of the city is properly pronounced with a lot of nasal tone, and approximates “shi CAH goh”.

Green Bay – Home of the Packers of the NFL. Incorrect pronunciation of this city’s name will immediately brand you as being from somewhere else than Wisconsin. “Green Bay” is properly pronounced with equal emphasis on BOTH words. It is not pronounced “GREEN bay” or “green BAY”.

Milwaukee – The largest city in Wisconsin, known for beer, tools, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and … beer. For pronunciation, understand that there is no “l” in the name, despite the spelling. The closest approximation phonetically would be “Muh WOK key”.

Ogema – The nearest town to Timms Hill. The friendly folks there are hosting our pancake breakfast. The pronunciation is NOT AT ALL what you would expect, believe me. The proper way to pronounce the town’s name is with a hard G and the accent on the first syllable. Think “OH guh muh”. Yeah, it fooled me, too, fer sure!

On top of – This expression is often used when giving directions. It typically means “beyond”. For example, consider the phrase “Turn left two mile [not “miles”] on top of da church at Tonet”. This means turn left when you get two miles beyond the church (not two miles above it; this ain’t Colorado, ya know?). Pronounced “on TOP pa”, as one word.

Route – The common term used for highways, as in “Route 57” or “”Route I-94”. However, be advised that this term rhymes with “shout”; it does not rhyme with “shoot”.

Shawano – A small town between Wausau and Green Bay. Despite how it is spelled, it only has TWO syllables: “SHAH no”. You need lots of nasal on both syllables, by the way.

Wayside – You may see this sign as you travel down county and other side roads. It means a roadside rest stop, usually consisting of a small parking area, open grass areas and trees, picnic tables, and, sometimes but not always, restrooms and a “bubbler” (drinking fountain). These small park-like areas are usually clean, neat and restful. They are great places to rest, stretch your legs, and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of rural Wisconsin.

Wisconsin – The place where you are at. This name requires a significant nasal input to be pronounced correctly, especially in the second syllable. Speak through your nose on this one, folks. Think: “wiss KAHN sen”. If your nasal cavities resonate, you got it right!

Food
Wisconsinites come from a tradition of hard physical labor, on farms and in factories. Therefore, they eat good, relatively simple food and plenty of it. Milk is typically served with every meal. Despite the high levels of animal fats, beer and other such stuff consumed, and the consequent significant numbers of overweight people, Wisconsinites are still among the healthiest and longest-living in the United States. You figure it out!

Belgian pies – Delicious summer season single-crust pies made with fresh cherries, cranberries or other local ingredients, with a large dollop of cream cheese in the center. Be sure to try one!

Booyah – A thick soup (almost a stew) typically made with chicken, other meats, a variety of vegetables, plus spices and other goodies. Typically served at picnics, church suppers, and other events. Usually made in a large cast iron cauldron or kettle on a supporting rack or barrel over an open fire; it can take 6-12 hours or more of slow cooking to come to full taste. Delicious and very filling! Beer and/or brandy are vital ingredients in any good booyah recipe; not for the booyah itself, but to sustain the food slicers, pot stirrers and fire tenders over the long haul!

Brat (rhymes with “rot”, not with “hat”) – Short for bratwurst, the most popular kind of sausage in Wisconsin. Johnsonville brats are famous throughout the country. Typically served with mustard and sauerkraut. Best when marinated in beer, butter and onions after frying on a barbeque (recipe available on request).

Broasted Chicken – A supper club favorite. This is chicken that is cooked in hot oil in a pressure cooker. The oil and pressure keep the moisture in the chicken, and also crisp up the skin, resulting in a delicious flavor. Not for the faint of heart, if you know what I mean, in a cholesterol sort of way, but really good!

Cheese – Regardless of what you may hear elsewhere (California, Vermont), cheese finds its true essence in Wisconsin. Colby cheese was invented here! Try a 5-year aged extra-sharp cheddar cheese and see for yourself what an incredible taste experience real cheese can be! Be sure to take some back home with you.

Cheese curds – Bite-sized irregular nuggets of (usually) cheddar cheese, typically sold in bags as a snack food. You can tell if a curd is fresh by whether or not it squeaks when you bite into it. A squeak means it’s fresh. Often served as a low-calorie, low cholesterol snack in bars where they are breaded, cooked in hot oil, and served hot. Very tasty!

Friday Fish Fry – If you don’t like fish, don’t go out to eat on Fridays in Wisconsin! Virtually every bar, supper club, and restaurant will feature fried fish (usually perch or walleye, but sometimes bluegill of other panfish as well). If you don’t serve it, you might as well not be open, because everyone will be eating someplace else!

Fry – How you cook a brat or hamburger on a grill. You do NOT “barbeque” them, even though you may cook them on your Weber barbeque. A picnic or event is a “bratwurst fry”; nothing else!

Meals (Names of) – There are basically three meals in Wisconsin: breakfast, dinner and supper.

Breakfast is what you would think it would be; it’s usually pretty big (bacon, eggs cooked in bacon grease, toast, pancakes, potatoes, etc.). We don’t do grits, corn bread, or biscuits and gravy up here, so you southern folk will just have to deal with it.

Dinner is the noon-time meal. It can also be pretty hardy, especially with soup and sandwiches (made, of course, with Miracle Whip).

Supper is the evening meal, and is usually served about 5:15 to 6:00 PM. This is where you get into your significant cuts of beef, pork, chicken, etc., usually served with potatoes and gravy, vegetables (formerly always canned, especially in winter months), plus, of course, bread, butter and dessert. You may also have your casseroles or one-dish (hot-dish) meals, usually containing either Campbell’s Tomato Soup or Cream of Mushroom soup, undiluted, as a major ingredient, with French fried onions sprinkled on top. Jell-o mold with fruit is a common dessert.

Lunch is not a real meal, but instead is any sort of snack or break taken between any of the three regular meals. Like anything else, lunch can also involve a substantial amount of food to “tide you over”.

Miracle Whip (Kraft) – Wisconsin’s answer to Hellman’s Mayonnaise (on the East Coast) or Best Foods Mayonnaise (on the West Coast). Used as a salad dressing, as a replacement for mustard and other condiments in sandwiches, and as a topping for Jell-O. You either like it or hate it; there’s no middle ground. You’ll actually see individual packets of Miracle Whip here just like you would see ketchup or mustard.

Spices – Okay, to tell the truth, spices are not big in Wisconsin, except in spicy sausages. You got your salt and pepper, your celery salt, sage for the turkey, and one or two others, but that’s about it. We’re learning, but it’s a long haul, ya know? Just deal with it, okay?

Supper Club – A Wisconsin original. This is typically a bar that also serves good basic food at very reasonable prices, usually in a separate room adjacent to the bar, rather than in the bar itself. It’s not nearly as fancy (in most cases) as a true restaurant, but the food is typically REALLY GOOD. Expect to get cheese spread, liver paste and bread sticks for appetizers. Steaks and broasted chicken are on almost every menu, as well as fried fish on Friday night. Some supper clubs have evolved into rather fancy establishments (no plastic plates!), but the small town, informal ambience usually remains.

Tailgating – A major Wisconsin cooking and eating social gathering, especially at Green Bay Packer and University of Wisconsin football games. This simple picnic concept has evolved into a major culinary art form here. Elaborate, multi-course menus are prepared on special equipment, including customized, enclosed trailers with large-screen TV, slide-out grills, and side-mounted beer taps to save time when you need a refill. Weather is no deterrent: dress warm and just ignore the snow, and stay warm with a B ‘n’ B, okay?

Drinks and Places to Drink

Wisconsinites of all backgrounds enjoy their alcoholic beverages and the community spirit that goes with it. They like the “three B’s: brandy, beer and booze”.

Bar - The local bar is the social center of nearly every city, town, hamlet and crossroads in the state. If you have to travel more than a mile or two to get a beer, you are probably in the National Forest or out on somebody’s “back forty”. In some locales, you may find three, four or even more bars on the same block, each with its own personality and regular clientele. Nearly everyone has their favorite hangout, where a stop to “hoist a couple” on the way home from work is a time-honored tradition. Shuffle board, bar dice and cribbage add to the fun and conviviality. Many small country bars are actually the converted living rooms of the owners’ homes. Bar food is good, plentiful and cheap, because there is so much competition; especially good for dinner or lunch, but not supper (see above). Equivalent terms include tavern, tap, pub, place (as in “Jake’s Place”), corner (since so many are on intersections), and many other terms.

Beer – Wisconsin’s signature drink (other than milk). In addition to the big megabrewers of the present and the past (Miller’s, Pabst, Blatz, Schlitz, and others), there are dozens of micro- and craft breweries cropping up all over the state. Many homes have extra refrigerators in their basement rec rooms dedicated to holding and dispensing the owner’s favorite beer on tap. Whatever style you want, you’ll find it. Virtually no occasion is complete without a six-pack (or more).

B ‘n’ B – Not what you would expect. This is not the elegant Benedictine and Brandy, but rather a shot of brandy with a beer chaser. A very common order at many local bars.

Brandy – Drink of choice, especially on a cold winter’s night, to warm you right up. Wisconsinites are among the highest per capita consumers of brandy in the US. Christian Brothers is a real favorite.

Mixed Drinks – Wisconsinites love their mixed drinks, which are often priced very inexpensively compared to most parts of the country. Patrons tend to order their favorites with all the complexity and élan of a veteran Starbucks coffee drinker in Seattle. If you don’t know what a “brandy old-fashioned sweet on the rocks with a cherry” is, or a “Seven and Seven”, you need more work. Fortunately, the tests are really fun!

Pop - Term used to cover soft drinks of nearly all kinds, except, perhaps, lemonade. We don’t use terms like “soda”, “soda pop”, or (as in GA), “Coke”. It’s just “pop”. Baumeister orange and root beer are just plain delicious. Ask for a Baumeister orange pop.

Wine – I am happy to report that Wisconsin is slowly crawling out of the dark ages when it comes to wine, but it has been a long, hard struggle, and there is still a long way to go in some quarters. There are still places where the entire “wine list” consists of Gallo burgundy (red), Sebastiani Chenin Blanc (white), and Beringer white zinfandel (rose). That’s all, folks! But new wineries, making more than just fruit wines, are cropping up (pardon the pun), and many restaurants and stores carry an extensive selection of fine wines.

A Few Miscellaneous Words

The material presented so far should pretty well cover most of the basic situations you’ll run into during your time in Wisconsin. However, there are still a few terms and pronunciations which may confuse you. So here they are.

Boat – It means the same here as anywhere else, but in many cases refers specifically to smaller open boats with small outboard motors, used for fishing. The important thing here is to pronounce the term correctly; it is actually a TWO-syllable word. It is pronounced BO (rhymes with sew) wit, or BOW it. The second syllable is very subtle, but distinct.

Bubbler – A drinking fountain. This term is particularly common in eastern Wisconsin. It may have evolved from the practice in public parks of having a small pipe of potable water protrude out of a boulder and run continuously, offering both a cool drink and an appealing and gentle bubbling sound. Identifies you as a real expert on Wisconsinese.

Creek – A small stream. Rhymes with “brick”, not with “cheek”.

Flowage – A term used for an artificial water feature, especially on the Wisconsin River and its tributaries in northern Wisconsin. You would think that the term means a canal or improved channel where the water flows, but you would be wrong! In fact, it means a reservoir behind a dam, where the water DOESN’T flow! Some engineer bureaucrat must have thought up this monstrosity of misrepresentation. I have no idea how this term evolved, but it is an absolute (and totally STUPID) contradiction! ‘Nuff said!

Leinie – Short name for Leinenkugel’s, a popular beer brewed in Chippewa Falls. NEVER go into a bar and order a “Leinenkugel’s”; you’ll be immediately revealed as an “auslander” (foreigner). Ask for a “Leinie”.

Nordern – Local name for the northern pike, a popular and challenging game fish in Wisconsin. They are never called pike, or northern pike, just norderns.

Root – Those things in the ground that hold up trees. Pronunciation of the “oo” is sort of halfway between rhyming with “book” and halfway rhyming with “rut”. Does NOT rhyme with “boot”.

Squall Lines – One or a series of sharp, vicious linear storms that propagates in advance of a passing cold front, especially in hot, humid (“sticky”) weather. These can typically include a strong, sudden increase in wind from a dead calm, with severe gusts; heavy rain; thunder and lightning; and sometimes tornadoes. As the front passes, you will typically get a sudden drop in temperature and a 90-degree wind shift. These things are NASTY! Don’t ignore storm warnings or ominous looking clouds. These can build and explode very rapidly. Get to cover! This is NO JOKE, okay?

Tyme Machine - An automatic teller machine or ATM. Most banks belong to one banking group, and they call their ATM’s “Tyme Machines”, so the specific term has taken on a more generic meaning, like Xerox or Kleenex.

Yupers – Collective noun for the residents of the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. Derived from “UP-ers”, and rhymes with “supers”. Generally considered to be a slightly pejorative term, with implications of inferior intellectual ability and limited social graces: think North County hillbillies.

Hey guys,

I hate to be a bummer. I just wanted to let you know they are taking my sister off life support tomorrow and then she will probably die soon after. I'm not sure how much I will be around, but I appreciate all of your prayers.

When I feel better or boared from crying, I will log back in. For now I am just trying to absorb it all and still have hope that she will receive a miracle.

Thanks,

Dennis

Dennis:

I'm sorry. Please don't hesitate to PM or stop by, call whatever if you need anything. I suspect you believe, like me, that this is a transition, perhaps to something unknown ("we see through a glass darkly"), and I hope you take comfort in the faith in those unseen things that have been with you. It's the handling of the little things in life that are the "rehearsal" for times like this, and I know that you, and she, will both get through the journey. Prayers are with you.

Just a heads up for those who care...I'm currently working on installing Handbrake (complete with GUI) in Mint 4. A few hiccups so far, which may be due to the fact that Mint isn't Ubuntu...just really, really close to it, or...the more likely cause...I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

Push comes to shove, I have several LiveCDs laying around of Ubuntu 7.10-8.10, so...lots of Linux fodder to work with.

Whoa! Making progress...sort of. I had a libc6 dependency error that was supposedly unsatisfiable. Pfft. Consider it satisfied...of course, now I have a libglib2.0-0 dependency that's looking for some satisfaction...

I know...I'm a dork.

Does handbrake only rip DVD to mpeg? Or will it work in reverse, as in will it convert a video file back to DVD or ISO so I could burn it to watch on a TV?

Good question. I'm inclined to say that it only rips from...but...in all actuality, I have no clue.

but seriously... I'm impressed with the LINUX progress you made. installing new software isn't for the faint of heart. Now, just wait to you compile your own from tarballs.

Question. I downloaded the tarball, extracted it in /usr/local/src, and now want to run the configure script, so I did this:

./configure

and was met with

bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

I double checked and the configure file is in fact there...thoughts? Can I run the script through the GUI?

sniffle.

But, seriously welcome. Always rewarding to watch the "kids" grow up.

yeah. I avoid the ol' tarball as much as possible myself. but, it's a good exercise in blood pressure control.

you might try a normal google search for handbrake.deb (or whatever it's called ending in .deb) and see if someone may have built a package for you. then it's just a matter of :

sudo dpkg --install handbrake.deb

OT, sorta, but how did you make out with the LXF mags?
