...Or not, depending on who's posting at the moment. If you don't have specific Linux questions, come on in anyway and enjoy. We occasionally lapse into shaving discussions and fiction too. I've said it's a "thread about nothing" more than once. But over 5000 posts can't...be...wrong? :001_huh:

OK, I signed up but they sent me an email that said I might have to wait a few weeks for an invitation. So there's no direct download?
You gotta wait for you invite. It's still a closed alpha. Once you get your invite you can sign up for an account and then you can use apt-get to pull in the deb, or you can get the sources and compile by hand. If you are on anything but Ubuntu, you will have some tweaking to do. They have forums you can sign up for to read more about it.

Also, as an aside, I DO NOT use cracked or other programs. All programs I run are open source applications. I grew weary of closed source some time ago, and now I can't think of any application that I need a closed-source application to do. Seriously, opensource is too high quality for me to use cracked, or otherwise, proprietary apps. Just no reason.
Boxee is FOSS.
I put a colophon in my dissertation stating the programs I used. All were open source, except Stata (http://www.stata.com) (and if I had found R (http://r-project.org) soon enough, I would have used it). Very high quality programs, multiple platforms, can't say enough good things about them...all the way down to the open-source Fortran compiler. Open source now means really good software for almost everyone, unless you need to use Microsoft Exchange (and yes I know about Evolution, and no it doesn't work very well with Exchange).

Sorry Tom, only available as a stack of 500, 8.5" floppies. But, hey, you'll have something to do for the weekend.
Tom, I think that one uses Linux Lunch Box.
I'm not sure that Lunch box runs on carry on luggage. Will have to check the specs. may have to upgrade to Linux Luggable.
How many of you guys were along last year when Cory COMPLETELY MISSED Festivus?
Let's not let that travesty happen.

Haha. I am pretty into *nix and osx.
Since around 1997 I have had atleast 1 *nix computer.
I have also used mac os 7,9 and OSX (.1-.5).
I have a general hate for everything microsoft ( however I have used all microsoft oses since dos 5.0 until vista for various reasons).
When I was in highschool I taught a C++ class and a java class.
Consequently I now hate both C++ and java. I dabble in perl.
But generally I use osx now ( I have an eee 900 that runs ubuntu and a server that runs ubuntu), I see it as *nix with a usable gui and support to the point where I don't have to mess with nonsense too much ( I did that for years and after a while it gets tiring).
Thats just a little bit about my experiences, I have done a lot in my day.

‘Twas the geek’s night before Christmas, and all through the house,
Not a hard drive was whirring, not a single clicking mouse;
The gadgets were charging in their docks with care,
In hopes that St. Nick shopped at Best Buy this year;
The geeks were all snuggled all warm in their beds,
While visions of smartphones did dance in their heads.
With a click and a whir there arose such a clatter,
As the PDAs and UMPCs began to all chatter;
A song they did sing to ring in good cheer,
In their sleep geeks were smiling for what did they hear?
Nothing, because it was all flash drives here,
And as they settled their heads back down in the bed,
They dreamed of the gadgets that might be colored red;
A Zune, an iPod, or an HDTV,
Could that be what they’d find underneath the tree?
As the geeks fell asleep with their eyes all aglow,
And the visions of electrons did come and did go;
With a whoosh down the chimney the gear did alight,
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
Merry Christmas from the anti-Geek.

I'll let you share in my new enterprise..."Chia Shaving Mug/Brush"
It's a simple concept...as the mug sits in the bathroom, the Chia seeds grow. It's shaped like a Sable hat.
Inside, is a brush, a Chia brush, where the Chia seeds grow into a "Best Chia Bristle" form.
You mix the lather in the mug-- then it turns inside out, putting the Chia grass INSIDE the mug, where it massages the lather...then, when done, you turn it back out, rinse the whole thing and it grows.
You can use Lemon Grass and let your cat nibble at it a bit, too...

I happened to be in the region of the Cheddar Curtain today. I wanted to share with you that Wisconsin, Cory's domain, is not as backwards as you mgiht think.
I tuned in, for example, to Wisconsin Public Radio 90.3, WHLA, which is near the Czar's home. They have a highly intellectual program...for Wisconsin, that is.
The broadcast day started out with "BBC World News Wisconsin Edition" which had some guys with a distinct British accent saying things like "So...I think that donut shop is closed now...but they got good ones over to the Holiday Station next to the Shopko...let's go over there." Informative, stimulating.
The morning show traffic report was most helpful. "Watch out over there by highway C, doncha know? There's a pothole as big as a cow's ass in the left lane, so watch where you go." VERY helpful
Then an interesting segment; "Beers From Around the World" Again, highly informative, with beers from Milwaukee, New Glarus, St. Louis, Detroit and a can of Labatt's from Canada. They ended by presenting the "Soma-Somalira--Somasomething or another..." from the Best Western at the Corner of I-90 at exit 220.
A classical music segment followed...with the works of Franklin Yankovic the HarmoniCats and a brief visit with a local cellist, Yo-Yo-Ma-Ma.
A financial segment featured Bernard Maydoff in a very interesting program in "Building Wealth with a Little Help From Your Friends."
I was just starting to drive through the signal area's fringe (station has a 5 watt trasformer) when the Farm Report came on...glad to know cash hogs are down the 50 cent limit today, but BACON is up, as well as December cattle, at 86.05. But Milk futures are down at 12.75 a hundred weight. This led to a gardening segment. "Spread the Chia seeds carefully-- but don't over-water."
And then the signals were gone... I turned my Artic Cat down the next county road, waved at the hot chick in the Carharts driving the John Deere 4020, pulled into the Piggly-Wiggly and got my breakfast, heading for home.
It was a great day.

It's much worse than having to read "1984" or "A Clockwork Orange" in one of those Sunday night cram sessions before a final exam, in which the ultimate insult happens-- the prof decides not to reference this book at all.
Yeah...it's kinda like that.
READ!:001_rolle
Clockwork Orange is the only book to give me a headache in the first 5 pages.
And I've read threads of 10,000 posts, not fun..
YEAH...BUT WHAT DOES HE SHAVE WITH? :mad3:

I know it's hard to believe, but even I, Mr. Gillette, have therapy-- my point is, it's not GOOD therapy if you don't send the therapist to the bottle.
I do it by reciting mantras:
Therapist: "How was your week today?"
Me: "What? What the hell does THAT mean?"
Therapist: "How are you today, this week?"
Me: "Linux"
Therapist: "I'm glad to hear that. Anything new?"
Then I go into great detail about Lynchmeister getting stopped at the border, and now he's buying a house, and Dennis downloading some geeky program, and some new guy in the Linux thread...
Therapist: "Let me stop you there for a minute."
Me: "Denny Crane."
Therapist: "Let's go back to the part where this dog chewed the door.."
Me: "Linux. Denny Crane."
Therapist: "I think our time is just about up. 5:30 Thursday sound good?"
Me: "Linux. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU SHAVE WITH?!"
Therapist: (And I've talked in this thread about my HOT therapist) "I use a Daisy on my legs. See you next week."

We're heading to Superdawg on Milwaukee Avenue. I met Old Saw and the missus last summer on one of their trips to Michigan. I just wanted to say that she seemed like a VERY well-adjusted person regardless of her connection with Dennis.
Having met her, I'm trying to imagine the scene...Old Saw snickering. Mrs: "What's so funny?" Dennis: "Oh that crazy Ray...he said Cory's Ethernet Cable was found at the border." 'Huh?" "Nothing...just keep driving...OH! Jennifer Anniston!...

So that's why I got a veteran's badge.
I want a Veteran's Badge...I spent 8 years shooting pool and playing ping-pong, wearing my white "pjs" on the shoulders of the tax payers.
My WORST seas story...the most hellacious moment in my 8 years in the Navy-- we got aboard this big gray ship, an aircraft carrier called the Enterprise. President Reagan and VP Bush was aboard, and the widow of General McArthur.
Somebody untied the ship, and it went all the way out of the harbor, under the Golden Gate Bridge, and out where some other ships went by and some planes flew over.
All the time our little Navy Band was playing marches. Then the food was served. We played a few more marches, and got into the food line. But by the time we got our instruments put away, and into line for the food, they were completely out of the shrimp, and just about all that was left was the smoked salmon, some dips, crackers and chips, as well as fresh fruit.
It was hell! We made it back in a couple of hours, and I was able to get some burgers and fries. This was the WORST day I ever had in the service-- we worked nearly 6 hours before going back to our hotel in San Francisco, where we had a day or two to ourselves for R & R.
SO I WANT A VETERANS TAG.
(My Hot Therapist is at the VA hospital!) I want a Veterans tag.
That was my entire Sea Duty in 8 years of service...but I have lots of marches memorized.:lol::lol:

Lessee here, I'm 37 (38 in June);
Yes, Tom is a senile 70 year old man who richly deserves a veteran tag for his hours of rough duty at sea;
Hey you non geeks, someone shout out for page 256 (in just a few posts we'll have to move to 16-bit page addressing since 8 bit addressing will no longer contain us), or perhaps for page 128 if you've got long page browsing set up;
Installing FreeBSD isn't that hard -- Grab a copy of OSX and get going;
Installing OpenBSD isn't hard either, unless you want to actually install any applications (and make it far less secure);
The Joy of Tech is a great cartoon, and worthy of the Geek and Anti-Geek / Minister of Flair stamps of approval;
5150 isn't the best Van Halen album, but it's a good album no doubt and possibly the best "Van Hagar" album;
I'll put in for the 27th as the lunch meetup in Chicago; Tom, you'll forgive me if I ask for others to chime in as to the value of your choice of lunch locations -- guys, is he ranting or is this place a great Chicago lunch joint?
Little Soapbox turned six months old yesterday. She's a little under the weather but irrepressibly fun, cute, and optimistic she'll be able to attend the lunch meetup. I've been showing her pictures of riot helmets and billy clubs so she's five kinds of excited to meet burnwood! :w00t:

Just pondering--- just down the road from where I live and where Dennis will bne driving, along Interstate 94, is a place called "Key LIme Cove" an expensive water park, with fake palm trees, real parrots, pirates, ("I don't WANNA be a pirate!") etc etc.
Just wondering-- in places that are already warm, like Key Biscayne, Hawaii, etc. etc.....do these places have luxury hotels where it's snowing inside and people can put on warm clothes, gloves, boots, fire up the Toro and blow some snow?
Justwondering....
Happy to be a Veteran today!

I had a brilliantly wonderful Linux moment last night and want to share (no, it's not even really technical). I use my Linux box for MythTV, to serve files, to process data, & for backup. I have two 500GB drives in a software RAID, or, each drive mirrors the other so that if one drive fails, you lose no data.
One drive failed (my first Seagate to ever fail), and I removed the drive, put in another 500GB drive, and in five minutes the machine was re-mirroring the good drive and in about an hour I was back up to full "redundancy" of storage. Man, I would have hated to lose that 500 GB of data (movies, music, photos, and data files).
I encourage everyone to mirror their drives (RAID 1) to back up their files.
Nerd note: I've gotten waaaay too fluent with fdisk and mdadm, but oh what great results!

Boy I was offline for a few hours and y'all went totally bonkers!
Lessee here, I'm 37 (38 in June);
Yes, Tom is a senile 70 year old man who richly deserves a veteran tag for his hours of rough duty at sea;
Soapbox...Chicago is a big city, not like DC, which has a beltway-- but I live up north, where all the richies live, where the Bulls and the Bears practice, etc. and the Cubs fans live.
Having said that, all kidding aside...one of my absolute FAVORITE places, for a really nice lunch or dinner with a great menu and decent prices is Praire Grass Cafe, somewhat north of the City....http://www.prairiegrasscafe.com/
If you're planning downtown, and want something quick and dirty, there are a million places...just look for the Vienna Beef sign.
To eat like Obama...find any of several "Harold's Chicken Shacks" (his words, not mine). For Chicago Style pizza, Lou Malnati's is good, Pizzaria Due (downtown) or find Zeni (remember him?) He cooks pizzas out west in Lombard...I could send you there.)
Damn....If you guys are around on 26 let me know. Superdawg is still on my radar.

That's a really good story, I mean, explanation, there Tom. But, the truth of the matter -- and it's quite sad really -- is that there's been a huge black out in the Czardom (the hamster running on the wheel has died) and Cory has been unable to connect to the internet. I'm lucky enough to have a battery powered computer from the wrong side of the Cheddar Curtain and therefore, can still connect. "Boo Berry Nibblet Meister" (the hamster/generator/internet connection) will hopefully be replaced by Christmas Day, providing that the Czarina has remembered to put air holes in his little Christmas Box.

And that explains, of course, why Dennis was heading to Elkhart IN and environs, where the Amish run their computers on methane from horse and cattle droppings.
I have a Coleman computer...I should convert to propane, but it's pure White Gas...as long as I keep it pumped up and keep a clean mantle on the screen, it works fine. :w00t: Linus, by the way.

All kidding aside...most of the guys are okay here. But this one guy, Lynchmeister, can be a pain. He's always whining about border crossings, losing his ethernet cable, smuggling things in from Canada, worrying about his dog eating his back door (whatever that means!!!!:w00t:)
He'll probably hit you up soon for a contribution to, uh...the, Human Fund.
If I were you, I'd give...GENEROUSLY. If not...well...just remember, I suggested it first.
Oh...Linux.
Hey! If you've got a problem with "Money for People," well, then, you gotta problem with me!
See? It's not so bad on this side of the Curtain! :biggrin:
So how old is everyone here?

oh, just ignore them. Tom forgot his meds again... or we've drifted off Linux and into "the anything thread" again.
ps... to really understand, just reread the last billion or so posts. but a quick run down.. cory (lynchmeister) and I are Czar and Vice-Czar of the Cheddar Curtain by landslide election. cory is obsessed with seinfeld and had a bad trip to canada where he smuggled back green aqua velva and ethernet cables. yes, it's all crazy. it makes a lot more sense (?) if you reread from the begining, but who would be that masochistic. OH and cory had an invasive search and concomittant panic attack when he tried to cross the border returning from canada with nothing more than a WI drivers license. Oddly, his Mrs. was given no trouble at all.
Very accurate, very concise. I'm impressed, Richard. :biggrin:
I've done it. Remember all those trips to and from Michigan. On at least one of them I made the missus drive while I read the beginning of this story. Of course, by then I was hooked and didn't stop until I got up to about post #800 which is about where I entered this tragedy.

Rich...I can remember that day DISTINCTLY, how disappointed I was. To me it was like finding a picture of Billy Graham in the arms of Mae West in the Weekly World News...so disheartening.
Then I thought about it-- it's taken me several months to get past it, almost a year, in fact...but I think maybe Festivus is so REAL to Cory and to his lovely wife, Tina Fey, that their celebration of it is intensely personal. I came to understand that this year, when they worked so hard cutting out little Festivus pole cookies, Santa Clauses, etc...baked them just right, then coated them with Cheddar and Havarti cheeses. It became personal when they decided to eat all 26 dozen of them rather than sending them out to their closest friends, here on the Linux thread.
I'm sure it takes time, especially for Mrs. L, to write down and articulate her greivances, and I can't think of ANY feat of strength worse than what Cory went through, all by himself, at the hands of U.S. Border Patrol Agents at the Thunder Bay crossing. I know I couldn't have endured that!
But I hope, this year, the Czar can at least make a Festivus appearance up on the balcony, or on the deck in front of the trailer, or wherever, just to let us "little people" know that he's taking time for the celebration-- before they sit down to a dinner of meatloaf and hotdish.

You make several good points and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. Yes, the Czarina's collection of grievances is obviously where the term "multi-quote" came from.

Your "Twelve Days of Czarina's Grievances" makes sense on another level-- Cory's opening post in "Linux Mint" was on January 9, 2008.
Take Festivus, take the airing of grievances x 12 days, some feats of strength that make him cry and run out of the coffee shop, add in some stale, cold meatloaf or spaghetti or whatever they eat with hotdish up there, (with cheese of course), and it takes you just about up to the first week of January.
Do you think this whole thread has been some sort of Penance she imposed on him?!:confused:

I am thinking about building a new server and buying a straight razor for myself for christmas.
Man you belong here; I don't know why you ever doubted that.
I'm probably getting two 1 Terabyte hard drives to put in my Linux machine (to replace the aging 500GB drives), but that's hardly "building a new server". Still, SWMBO really likes having all the pictures backed up on multiple drives.
The straight razor is always tempting; I have plenty of reasons to say no right now, but it's always tempting...

Do you travel with the Dogs?
Finally-- Cory, you start it...but let me know when it's a good time for the beginning of AIRING OUR GRIEVANCES.

I shoulda joined the Navy. :lol:
I can't exactly recall the worst day I ever had on active duty. But I do recall the worst situation similar to this. Munsingen, Germany, April 1986, retirement ceremony of battalion commander of our sister unit in the German Army, on a French post. For those of you who have never been to southern Germany in April, let me assure you, it is still winter in this part of the world. This was also the only time I recall doing a parade in dress uniform.
Imagine a retirement speech in German, translated to French, translated to English followed by comments by commanders of sister units from French and American Armies, with translations, of course. Then came the incoming commanders speech, with translations. National Anthems for all three countries were in there somewhere.
This was a ceremony, not a full parade, so there was absolutely no marching. We simply stood there, at parade rest and attention, as ordered, for about 4 hours. While it sleeted and snowed in a 10 - 15 MPH wind. In a uniform designed for summer. The Army uses polyester for dress uniforms and they are required to fit snugly. There was absolutely no way to get anything insulating underneath. We were allowed to wear our dress gloves, that was nice.
Afterwards, we were served spaghetti, European style, noodles with a thin tomato sauce, it had once been hot. Then there was a three hour bus ride home. I forgot to mention we'd left our barracks at 4:30 that morning for a 9 AM ceremony. The spaghetti was lunch.
I want my Veteran tag too.

OK guys, I need help with pictures and Ubuntu.
I bought a memory card for my phone so I could more easily move pictures to my computer. I saved some pics on the card, then loaded the card into my camera to use it as a card reader. Neither the camera or the computer recognized the files even though they are jpg and if I text message them to my email I can see them.
Anyway, I thought if they were jpg that the camera would recognize them.
The other thing is I can't find the camera anywhere from the computer using Ubuntu. When I connect to a windows machine I can see the camera device in file manager. Why can't I access it directly in Ubuntu?
Also, I wanted to save music to the memory card and thought I could simply copy files to the card using the camera as a card reader. Since I can't see the camera I can't copy anything to it.
Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Dennis,
MOST, not all cameras are auto recognized and mounted by linux. yours might be one of the exceptions. you may well have to buy a separate card reader to work with your memory card in your case. as a starting point, google for "linux" and your camera name and model and see what comes up.

Rich,
Using F Stop I can load pictures that I took with the camera, but not with the phone. Also, outside of using F Stop, how do I find the camera device so I can see what is on the memory card.
the camera is not a card reader - the interface is completely different, so no wonder you don't see anything but the pictures of the camera through the driver for the camera interface.
buy a reader, they are cheap and will work much better.

not easily. :lol:
It might be automounted in the /media directory, it might not. not every linux uses that directory. also check /mnt/camera or something like that. Now for the hard way...
there may be an easier way on ubuntu, bu this will work in any case... chances are buntu is mounting the camera as a scusi (or however you sepll it) device which are all in the /dev/sdx# hierarcy... x = the specific device (a...z) and #=the specific partition number. So, for ex, my card reader mounts as "/dev/sdb1" which means "scusi device b, partition 1"
ok, with me so far?
good.
unplug the camera from teh computer adn wait a bit. open a terminal. reconnect the camera.
at the terminal prompt type (w/o quotes): "dmesg | tail"
somewhere in that output, should be something useful. if you can't find it, post the exact text and I or one of us can look at it. but, somewere in there you're gonna find and sd.. notation and something like camera or the camera name with it. this sd.. is the device name that's being assigned to the camera. then you have to mount it at a mount point so that you can treat it like any other directory. mounting instructions to follow if you don't know how and if the output above leads us somewhere.

That should work. I forget if ubuntu mounts it as scsi.
It does mount everything else as scsi. So in theory it should, but it may have special cases for camera devices.. I've only hooked a camera to my ubuntu box once.
On another note, sending it out for honing tomorrow.

As for the ceremony...those are the things that make the veterans of us sit around for the rest of our life and tell the story.
The difference between that story and a fairy tale: (1) your story actually happened-- it's so utterly stupid and self-serving, that OF COURSE it happened, inconveniencing 1000 people to soothe the fragile egos of a couple of lame-ass CO's. (2) The fairy tale would begin "once upon a time" and this would begin.."Now this ain't no sh*t..."
Thanks for making me laugh!!!!

Oh man...I was gonna get nuts with the multi-quote, and in fact I did start to, but I'll save you guys some reading and just say, ":lol:"
And now for the Airing of Grievances! I gotta lotta problems with you people!...
Let me start with Tom. Tom, quite frankly your fascination with my people and our customs is apparent, yet you continue to mock our Wednesday night Pot Lucks and Friday night Fish Fries. Why can't you just accept what is true and come to grips with the fact that you were born on the wrong side of the Curtain?
Uh...okay...I have to admit this. MY name is Tom and I'm an alcoholic. ("Hello Tom") My name is Tom, and I'm an over-eater. ("Hello, Tom") My name is Tom and I am lactose intolerant. ("Hello Tom") My name is Tom...I live near Chicago and I'm a Packer's fan. I drive a 4x4 and I have an old snowmachine in my back yard, next to a pile of roofing materials I got for free by answering an ad in a local advertising magazine.
I"m torn, Cory...between my natural instincts and what I know I must do.
I apologize, your Czarness...I WANT to clog my arteries with fatty foods and thick, gooey cheeses that will send my intestines into orbit-- I want to drink cheap beer by the case, driving my Ford 4x4 out on the ice of some lake, catching fish for the VFW fish fry and then wrapping my car around a tree on the way home, catching a ride to the nearest bar on the back of a snowmobile, wondering what I'll tell "The old lady."
But I WILL pull for the Packers tonight.
Even worse...I'd rather be a YOOPER...which is like a Cheeshead with a lobotomy.:lol::lol::lol:

Why not? My grievance with Rich...you promised to send me all of Linux on 8" floppies, and I've yet to get them. They're probably in "the box with the Czarina's cookies", (which are probably stale Lorna Doons.)
Be patient! I've already gone through 3 delivery guys who've gotten hernias trying to lift the box.

That sounded suspiciously like a Grievance being aired...
JEN is ABSOLUTELY hot! I remember about 10 years ago she was on the cover of People Mag...my "guys" and I got to Deer Hunting camp...there was a Playboy or two, some hunting mags...and this People, with her on the cover...we kept it on the top...it was the hottest thing there (next to me).
Still...I'm so sorry my marriage to Jen didn't work out. She really was a bit of a slob and asked me to keep my shaving stuff in a cabinet.

I need a Festivus Miracle...I haven't bought a thing for SWMBO...thought of Yoga Toes...but can't get it shipped on time...she's a great woman (puts up with me) but very hard to "pigeon hole"...any ideas?
What are the rest of you guys getting? Maybe I'll get her a Linux disk...where?
I might get some Atari games...maybe Space Invaders...

Give her a tent... you'll be needing it to sleep in.

LMAO..RICH, you're too much! Three years ago I bid on this big tent on Ebay...a 10 man arctic tent. SWMBO was just walking out the door, and I said "I'm just going to drop a bid, just to smoke out what's happening."
I won the bid...but I didn't have enough $$$ to cover it, so it became (1) our Christmas/Festivus gift to each other and (2) our summer home in the UP in Michigan.
So I DID that...but I like the suggestion, and it IS an artic tent with a stovepipe hole...I might need it.
Thinking of YOGA TOES.

It's not day - it is every night when I'm smiling by the pole with a quickly diminishing wad of dollar bills...

Dennis, any chance that there is an icon called "Disk" on your desktop when you plug in the camera? This is typically where my pictures are when I connect a camera (digital or video).
In Festivus news, today is Festivus Eve, so Happy Festivus! I'll get the pole out of the crawl space.
