Sorry I missed 4000, but yesterday was my birthday and I couldn't expect my wife to wait all night to give me the second half of my birthday present. The other present she had for me was a Pre De Provence shave soap.

Hahahahahaha!
Erm... I mean, good luck.
:tongue_sm
Seriously, and nearly on topic, I remember the first time I tried to get a wireless card working with Linux. I was in a restaurant with some people (normally I don't break out the electronics in restaurants, but it's a casual place, and it was the last time we had a chance to work on my friend's computer; he was leaving that night and lives 1200 miles away). Anyway, we're working on his computer, and the waitress (cute little thing) asks "what are you doing, anyway?". My friend says: "oh, trying to get my wireless working so we can get our porn in here."
I was like: :scared: Last time I do him a favor.
True story.
4K!!! They said it couldn't be done! They said...no, that's not right...They said only those fools could do it!
Well done guys! I think we've awakened the beast again...and in a little less than 11 hours (who's counting?), I'm a free man for the next 5 days! We may be able to put this baby into overdrive if I start putzing around with a new release or distro. Hmmm...Maybe I'll give Red Hat (Fedora?...the free one, at any rate,) a try. My wife's gonna love this.

Fedora and CentOS are the free versions of RedHat.
In all honesty, I prefer Debian and Gentoo (note that Ubuntu is based on Debian). Ubuntu is great because you can let the OS handle everything, or you can get under the hood and get your hands dirty.
Gentoo is great because the only option is to get your hands dirty, and I don't recommend this for most folks. I'm a masochist when it comes to the command line.

Congrats to us all on 4K!
@Cory... just in case it matters... I think Fedora (=Red Hat's "community" edition) "ships" with Gnome as the default desktop still.. If you want KDE, Fedora 8, was the last one to give you the pre-install option of KDE 3.x. The newer Fedoras all install 4.x if you select KDE then you have to retro fit 3.x if that's what you want.
I don't know what Centos (=3rd party, recomplied Red Hat Enterprise) comes with.

Well, back off/on topic, I'll probably have some serious linux fodder for you all in the next few days. Two days ago, my 13 month old laptop decided to cook itself. Both the motherboard and video card had traces of melted solder on them, and needless to say the laptop is now a $1,100 brick.
So I went out and bought a new desktop today, and I'm still in the process of setting up the Vista partition. I'm planning on having a 200 gig Ubuntu partion as well.
Let's see, AMD Phenom Quad core, 2.8 GHz with 4MB of cache on 2 different levels, a total of 1343MB of video memory, and 7 Gb of RAM (yeah, that's not a typo... seven). I'm guessing with ubuntu this thing will FLY....
So here's the question. I've got the RAM to justify using the 64 bit version of Ubuntu... will I have that much trouble dealing with drivers and programs in the 64 bit version? More so than the standard 32 bit?
64 Bit Linux is hit or miss, I don't have much trouble with it, but I run SabayonLinux (gentoo derivative) which IMHO handles multilib support better than other distros. Give it a shot, you'll only be out the cost of a DVD.

Yeah, if you want to cheat us SabayonLinux and you have a functional Gentoo install (with helpful tweaks) in 30 minutes, instead of a few days.
I agree, though Debian/Gentoo based distros FTW!
I think Dennis may have to step up to the plate tomorrow.... That was a rather boring post considering it was number 4000. Let's hope I have something interesting to wake up to:tongue:
It was late, and I was brain-fried from dealing with web design crap. I'll try harder next time.
Debian's probably my favorite distro, though I keep a partition set aside to play with the geekier ones, like Slack and Gentoo (haven't had much time with Gentoo yet, though; need to remedy that).
As far as WMs/Desktops go, I usually dump KDE and Gnome and go with something more streamlined; Fluxbox is my favorite.

Ohh, I forgot all about Sabayon... I had tried it when I was on my old laptop, but couldn't get the wireless to function, so I ditched it. But I do remember liking it quite a bit.
I may end up sticking with Mandriva, but I would like to get ubuntu running since that seems to be the front runner today. The good news is that this new desktop's built in wireless card was instantly recognized in the live CD enviroment of both Mandriva and Ubuntu! So I should have free roam of all the distros now to play with as I feel like:biggrin::biggrin:

Dennis...you took a walk through my deer hunting cabin...not far from Da Yooper's version.
I think it was around 1990 when we were listening to the "Big Buck Report" and my Dad heard "Second Week of Deer Camp" for the first time. He laughed and laughed. So I put him in the car and drove to the big town of Newberry, MI...walked into the radio station and there was the on-air "talent" smoking a cigarette and talking on the phone. He sold us a Yoopers tape then and there, and gave us a list of live performances.
Here I am, a professional musician, a high-brow classical artist, making sure I can get my Dad to a live concert. "Hey Dad, I'm playing a big gig in Chicago...playing for ____ would you like to hop on the train and come in to hear it at the Schubert?" "Naw...but when can we go see Da Yoopers?"
So we did. Let's just say a little of Da Yoopers goes a LONG way!
But...this is very VERY much like my deer camp. Tomorrow is opening day. I hope they all get skunked!:lol::lol::lol:

Until recently I ran a l33t ricer SL source-based build. I got fed up with blocks and portage and week-long world compiles, and maintaining /etc/portage/pacakge.* files, and switched to Sabayon's binary package manager entropy. So I am in a very unique position to be able to tell you if a l33t ricer gentoo box is as fast as a similar, untweaked, n00b binary box. I can tell you that it is NOT noticeably slower as a "bloated" binary distro vs a source-based box. I think much of the "speed" of gentoo is only if you run a legacy system (like PIII, 512M RAM, etc). So dual core 1GB + folks will NOT notice any real difference between a binary distro and a source-based (ala Gentoo/Slackware) distro. Binary is just so much faster and less work to maintain.
[ASIDE] As a cheap plug for Sabayon, it's binary package manager entropy is awesome. And you can have portage (source-based package manager) and entropy living happily together. So if something is not in entropy repos, then you can get it off of portage (which has nearly every known package in the universe).

Ray, I caved into the instant gratification and went with the crispy barbacoa tacos. Aside from the instant gratification, which is justification for anything, I reasoned that I do have some bottles of various booze atop the fridge, so if I'm looking for something to drink tonight, I'm sure a cocktail or sip of Don Julio will do in a pinch.

Tied up? Possible milk money embezzling scheme? Czarina will be out? Hmmm... me thinks there is more to this story.
Did she come home and finally throw the other boot at him? Perhaps she discovered the plans to divert milk funds, which is actually a kingdom offense in the land of Cheddar and carries pretty heavy penalties, even for the Czar. Or was he just reckless and careless while walking those two dogs and they wrapped their two 30' long leashes around him and a small tree, leaving him at the mercy of the local pigeons and seagulls, while waiting for the Czarina to come home and rescue him. Hmmm... I wonder.

Right now its KDE 3.5, as a slalom back from the Fluxbox I'd been using under Wolvix. I'm enjoying the more feature-rich side of things, and the way all the K applications play nicely together.
If it helps, I do boot to the command line, (whose Runlevel escapes me at the moment) and use Mutt to grab my Gmail, so I deal with things as I boot up and shut down instead of obsessively checking my email all day long.
I'm slowly building a library of good CLI applications. If I could get the hang of Finch I'd probably do my IMing from a terminal. There's just something...warm and fuzzy about ASCI on a black screen, you know?
And if you surf the web with a text-browser, you don't get assaulted by flash ads.

Text IM : Warm fuzzies indeed. XChat++ (and before that, just around the time the Earth cooled, there was TLK on the DEC PDP-11 series...)!

You can definitely find a distro to run... question is, how to load it. Can you hook up an external drive? As far as I know, there's no way to run an installer from the drive that's being installed to. It'd be a pain, but I guess you could load/install a very simple (CLI only) linux from floppy and then proceed to d/l the GUI stuff once that's up and running. Probably not for the faint of heart, however. Easiest is going to be to figure out some way to jury rig a CD drive to the laptop.
Anyone else have an idea that I'm missing?
RichGem

just had a thought....
It' isn't perfect, but ya could d/l wubi (a ubuntu installer of sorts) and run that from win. I didn't like the wubi set up, but you could give it a shot.
(wubi, IIRC, runs linux from within windows or from a virtual drive in win... can't remember exactly, but you end up with basically, a dual boot set up)

Cory, about that multiquote sickness, see Mr. G about getting some good drugs to help you with that. Multiquote should only be used when a single reply only makes sense to the additional quotes. All other times use the Mr. G post doping method of starting a new post every time you have a new thought, even if it is on the same topic.

Yeah, what he's missing is a "backpack" CD-ROM drive that runs from a parallel port. Get one of those, and you'll probably be in business. I can't tell you where to find one, but I'm sure there are some around. Actually, if things look bleak, and if no one else can help...I can consult the A-Team (actually, his name is Tim). But I don't like asking favors of the Godfather.

Alternately, you could (a) use a PCMCIA host bus adapter for a USB CDROM drive, or (b) get all geek-hackery and temporarily install a two-port ATA cable, but then you'd have to install the distro with the case open and parts hanging out. (which would be worth several pics, for sure)

What you say is very true. Most of the posters in this thread aren't just passing by. We have some long time members in here. This thread is like a vortex, once it sucks you in it doesn't let go.

That's not a challenge, by the way, Sol, but rather a statement that many, many things are possible with the application of old-hardware-hunting and forum-posting. I personally would love to help you get Linux running on that old POS laptop if you would promise it would get used, even lightly.
I have an old Mac Color Classic that I actually used for honest work at my old job in 2004-2005. It certainly wasn't my primary machine, but it could perform two functions inaccessible to modern machines, and therefore it had a place in my stable.
Now I've purchased an upgrade board for it and have fiendish plans to put it to work for some other purpose like NetBSD or something, but I also have limited amounts of time so it hasn't happened yet. But oh yes, there'll be a full Motorola 68040 CPU with the math coprocessor inside my Color Classic one day. System 7.6.1 will never look sweeter <rubs hands together>.
Anyway, my point is this: there's a lot of brainpower on the net and on this board that would be happy to help you get the thing running. If you have a PCMCIA slot or two, virtually anything is possible. I'd just like to know that it would be useful for someone.

The general convention is that thesis is for Masters' degree, and dissertation is for doctorate, though some refer to a "doctoral thesis" instead of "dissertation."
The one sentence explanation is this:
I look at the effect that drought has on international cooperation and conflict.
It takes me 279 pages to deal with the question (and I'm adding a chapter on civil war and drought for the book version), over 5000 lines of code (some of the code actually writes more code!), mountains of really neat/complex statistics, and 3 years just to assemble and create the data for the statistics. But the question can be neatly summed up in that one sentence.

Oh, and the most important part (well, besides that I finished it) is that I used Linux to create the data. When finished, my relatively speedy Linux machine ran for 30 days straight to make the final data. With some pragmatic coding I was later able to reduce that to about 4 days straight (there's no need to have monthly drought data when the rest of your data are annual).
But yeah, in relation to the Linux thread, not only did I use linux and all open-source software to make my dissertation, the work would not have been possible on Windows, because ArcGIS, the Geographic Information Systems (electronic mapping) software for Windows isn't really scriptable. They claim that it's Python Scriptable, but that's sort of like putting 5% biodiesel in your truck and claiming you're carbon neutral. It ain't a 100% lie, but it's not the truth either.
So, I owe a great debt to Linux. I contributed a patch to the Free-open-source GIS software (GRASS GIS (http://grass.osgeo.org)) but that's hardly contributing in relation to the benefit I've received.
There's my linux testimonial. I wouldn't be Dr. Soapbox without it.

My first computer class back in the pre-80s, we all shared a single terminal that used a green bar printer as the sole interface with a 300 baud (I think, may have been slower) modem which the phone handset rested in to communicate with the mainframe at the university.
Then one day we got an Apple computer with a green monochrome monitor and we all thought it was the coolest thing. However, it was a bit awkward looking back at the previous command lines that had scrolled off when you are used to just picking up the sheets and reading them.

okay, not that bad
it's an old IBM laptop, the kind with the keyboard that folds out to the sides as you open it, still has 95 on it (then the battery died), didn't bother plugging it up, it's an old one that was brought to me by a new teacher cleaning out her new classroom. Being a school computer I don't want to do to much to it, just looking for a simple way to make it usable for small tasks like hyperterminal into switches/access points so I don't have to lug around my bigger laptop, but really more of a fun project to see what it's still capable of.
I'm still intending on calling it a dead machine and "removing it from inventory", but looking for thoughts. I don't remember what all ports it has, the problem would be me having the equipment. I may of just thought of something I'll have to look at tomorrow...

I'd just like to know that it would be useful for someone.

it was actually less of a "how to do it" as much as "what suggestions for an old laptop that might barely run calculator..."
okay, not that bad
it's an old IBM laptop, the kind with the keyboard that folds out to the sides as you open it, still has 95 on it (then the battery died), didn't bother plugging it up, it's an old one that was brought to me by a new teacher cleaning out her new classroom.
Oh sweet, you have one of the "butterfly keyboard" Thinkpads? Those were beautiful. Yeah man, get a new battery for that model and give it a new life.
Now we're totally gonna help you, TAT cross poster or not! Too bad you're in Texas. I think we're moving out there next year, but we're waiting on word from UK (Lexington) first. And you shouldn't have to wait that long to use that laptop :001_smile
First up: post model numbers and what ports you do have. Please include how many PCMCIA ("PC Card") slots you have. And how much RAM is on board if you know. Win95 could run with 16 or 32 MB or RAM, and thus...well, you're gonna need more RAM, Puppy or DSL or not. The only thing you could realistically use with 32 MB of RAM is a command-line-only distro, and it sounds like you want a GUI...

I've just spent the last 12 hours beating my head against a wall staring dumbfounded at MATLAB code. Took me an hour just to find one colon buried in the code that should have been a semi-colon.
Ah, bug fixing. I still find that sometimes it helps to print out the code, grab a red pen and run the code through your wetware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetware) interpreter. But congrats on finding the syntax error.

Yeah, the language of geekery is really funny some of the time. If you haven't read through The Jargon File (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/index.html), it's worth the two weeks it'll take you to absorb it. For instance, here's the entry for wetware (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/W/wetware.html).
I'm a Perl user, so the Perl entry (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/P/Perl.html) (and its corollary (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/S/Swiss-Army-chainsaw.html)) are good examples to use, too.

So, linux, I linuxed the linux.
I had to "go binary" on my Sabayon install. Portage was just getting too much of a PITA to maintain. I was sick of maintaining /etc/portage/package.* files.
I had all these blocks and I was always running into instability (of course I run a ueberl33t ~amd64) so that was likely the issue... Nevertheless, I am happy with my decision to use SL's binary PM, Entropy. It's just a hell of a lot less to worry about when world updating. And world updates take SUBSTANTIALLY less than 1 week to do (like less than 30 minutes).
P.S. I recently installed Dropbox (http://www.getdropbox.com) which is a fantastic offsite backup daemon. Runs awesome even with the bugzilla ebuild (not in portage yet), even in KDE3.5 (it's really written for gnome).

Meh, it never bothered me that much. Of course, even though I've got GNOME installed on my Mythbox, it's not my primary desktop so I don't worry about too much (though why subversion keeps crashing is a mystery to me and it is pissing me off, so I suppose you might have a point).

Looks neat. Wish there weren't strings attached. I'd love to have that level of sync on my machines (I have several), but I'll stick to rsync (with unison coming soon, I swear). I've currently got a SATA issue with my FreeNAS, but it's a chipset issue and I'm not sure what to do about it. The FreeNAS is great because it supports rsync, unison, and a (ahem) host of other protocols.

yeah, Gentoo was my primary desktop and it was just getting in the way rather than making things easier.

What strings?
Well, if I had a NAS at home, then I wouldn't run dropbox either, I would just rdiff-backup and pipe over ssh to my FreeNAS, but again, don't got one. So backup consisted of an external HDD with a cron of flexbackup each Sunday night. With dropbox I get remote secure offsite and mirroring with my work computer. Makes keeping my keepass database synced easy.

Well, a bunch of those OSes are "friendly" and don't overwrite the MBR every time you update the system *cough*WINDOWS*cough*. I'm sure the biggest headaches were (a) running Windows of various flavors, and (b) formatting the drive for all of the OSes. I wonder if the guy had virtual machines -- say, running Windows 3.x, Win95, Win98, and WinME UNDER Windows XP? And would that really count?

Tom,
Can you recommend some good drugs for Cory to help him with his multiquote sickness?
OBVIOUSLY the ones I take don't work worth a damn...but there are some groups where people just come, sit in a room and text each other. It would go like this (Avoiding eye contact)
"Hi...my name is Cory, and I'm a czar. I am a compulsive Multiquoter."
(No speaking, just the sound of 20-30 keyboards clicking, all saying "Hi, Cory!")
He continues to type, then hits the send button:
"It started in school when I was 7. The teacher gave me the choice of cleaning erasers or writing 100 sentences. I wrote it 10 times, put the thing in a xerox machine and selected "20"...doubling the assignment for good measure. I was onto something."
(A muffled gasp from the group, and one of the women in the group slides a little closer to him, obviously flushed...)
Suddenly his screen is covered with "Hi, Cory" approaching from all sides, all angles, up, down...some with little pictures of penguins, others with little pictures of Jennifer Anniston. Cory puts his head down to type. The woman moves away, obviously frightened now.
"Dennis? Rich? Is that you?"
