Hmm, I never even thought of that... will a wireless USB key for a mouse even work with through a PS/2 adapter? Either way, my laptop (nor the docking station that it is usually plugged into at home) has PS/2 ports. The mouse hasn't been a major issue for me, I was just curious. In the mean time I just restart after an update or adding/removing programs... I figure I've been forced to do it all my life with windows, so I don't let it bother me too much:tongue:

Hmmm...not sure, but I guess we'll never know. :tongue_sm

My newer mandriva partition is working beautifully now, even with KDE4.1. I have an odd problem with my wireless mouse (MX revolution) though. In general, the mouse works just fine, although I haven't been able to map all of the buttons yet. The weird thing is, when I open up the add/remove programs, or try and update my urpmi database. After I close either one of those, the mouse is very slow to respond, and skips across the screen in a jerking motion.

Any ideas? Is this a mouse issue, a wireless usb reciever issue, a KDE issue? It only happens if I have opened one of those programs and closed it. If I have a bunch of other things open, and load the processor, it works just fine.... only those two.

I have no personal experience with wireless USB devices in Linux but I would suspect those two programs do some sort of system call that hoses the bus. I'd try removing and reinserting the USB dongle after running one of the offending apps and see what happens. Second step I'd try would be logout / login. Basically do anything to force the system to re-poll the USB bus.

Also, you don't mention if you're using a USB hub for your mouse. I have an mp3 player on a USB hub, sometimes my system sees it, sometimes not. It always sees the wired USB trackball and I have no issues with it.

Hey guys,

I know I've been out for a while; it's a long story I don't feel like getting into at the moment. I'm taking a crack at getting some accounting software from the office running on Ubuntu and I've hit one critical (and stupid) snag.

I have a virtual machine with Ubuntu 8.04 installed by way of VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) (I recommend it over VMWare since the full version of this is free for personal use), and I'm trying to build Wine 1.1.7 from source. It looks like the whole build attempt is succeeding without visible errors, but by the end of it I have nothing to show. I've successfully built other programs from source, so I'm hoping somebody here can help me overcome this hurdle.

I'm not sure why I started here instead of the Ubuntu forums either... :blushing:

So it compiles fine, but doesn't work is that right?

you did a make && make install and no errors? Check the compiler logs (if there are any). Not sure how Debian based systems compiler is structured (I'm too used to Gentoo). My experience was that source-base distros generally have better systems in place for compiling and installing packages (go figure).

I do know that a lot of times, people compiling on non-gentoo systems get into world of hurt because the compiler and installer don't give any good feedback about what is happening. try outputting the console output to a text file so you can go back through (especially the configure stage) and see what if anything isn't right.

The necessity to do this is extremely rare in Linux... you can change/update just about anything and not have to restart. The only time you really have to restart is when updating X or your desktop (KDE, for ex) and if you install a new kernel, but even then, things will usually run swimmingly based on what's in memory until you decide to restart. As for your specific problem, I have no idea since I don't use a USB mouse.

I suspet that a usb dongle won't work with a flash drive... too much into to get across, but I'd be interested in your results if you try it (and hope the blue smoke geenie doesn't come out).

ONLY reason to reboot is kernel upgrade. Upgrading X or KDE only requires X server restart CTRL ALT BACKPACE.

All other items, like rc items, can be restarted without an issue during runtime.

Maybe I wasn't clear about the mouse... it is a wireless mouse that uses a usb dongle to connect wirelessly to the computer. Not sure what some of the talk about the flash drives is about...

I didn't realize that ctrl+alt+backspace would allow/help to remap the buses when I log out. I'll have to try that, as well as unpluging and re-pluging the wireless dongle.

FYI if it matters, I always have the usb adapter plugged into my laptop docking station, that connects to the laptop via a single proprietary cable for HP, that connects everything external with just one cable (monitor, keyboard, monitor, external drives, etc). I would assume that this works as a USB hub, but can't be positive. Since the docking station plugs directly into the motherboard, it may not act as a hub that would distribute one port to 4....

I need some help. First off, I have to say I am not a fan of the SCIM. I finally got it congifured, which took me much longer than it should have, but now I have another problem. My English and Korean input systems are working, but I also have the Raw Code input system in effect as well. I've tried disabling through SCIM and that doesn't seem to do anything at all. Do I need to uninstall it through the synaptic manager? Or am I stuck with it?

I'm not sure if this helps, but I had SCIM installed on my eeePC when I bought it (set for English and Chinese). Since I type only in English, I decided to disable SCIM and a simple shut down/disable wasn't bringing me Zen. I had to uninstall SCIM all together to totally deactivate it.

Other than that, I really know nothing about SCIM.

With the recent release of Kubuntu/8.10, aka Intrepid Ibix, which arbitrarily chose to dump KDE/3.5.x in favor of KDE/4.x, I decided to make the break with Kubuntu.

I replaced it with the Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa) KDE CE distribution; first, on my laptop, and then on Slant-Fan's workstation at the tattoo shop. (http://www.tattooparadise.com/)

I like it (with the exception of the Linux Mint "branding" when using Google as the search-engine-of-choice in the toolbar "Search"). KDE really "screwed the pooch" on this one; OK, so did Ubuntu.

Interesting. I'm still trying to figure out the different nuances of having a KDE desktop. This is what I perceive to be accurate...please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, for example, KDE 3.5 is the GUI environment that can be overlayed any distro, so to speak? I believe this is what I did to an install of Mint 4.0 on my desktop. It worked OK for the most part, but there were a few bugs, which I believe may have been the result of the KDE install being interrupted. I ended up doing a fresh install of Mint 4.0, but did not go back to KDE 3.5 because I felt like I had totally lost the look and feel of Mint that I've grown to like.

My solution was to install Mint 4.0 and 5.0 KDE CE, which I assume are distros of Mint with an integrated KDE desktop environment, right? I really liked what I saw, but again, I had issues, which at this point I don't even remember the specifics of.

Interestingly enough, my install of Mint 5.0 Gnome also had similar issues...so back to 4.0 Gnome it was. It's been running great, but someday I'm sure an upgrade will be inevitable. Oh well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

No surprise here, but I'd have to recommend Linux Mint. It is Ubuntu based, which ensures user-friendliness and, as much as I don't want to compare the two, it is very similar to XP in the sense that an XP user should be able to make a relatively seamless transition to Ubuntu or Mint. The differences between Ubuntu and Mint being nothing more than differing color schemes and a few more multi-media codecs/drivers/etc. that come with Mint.

Sorry, no suggestions on the flash drive version...possibly Puppy Linux or Pretty Damn Small Linux?

It's called Ubuntu and using the "Wubi" installer. It creates a linux environment "inside" your windows environment. Pretty good for checking things out, but it's slower than linux would be if running it normally on your machine.

After switching from Mint 4 Gnome to Mint 5 KDE CE 3.5 and getting wine 1.1.7 compiled and installed, I plan to reformat my winblows partition this weekend.

As for getting Nvidia drivers installed and working properly in Mint 5 KDE 3.5, try adding the line agp=off (bold for emphasis only) to your boot command line after enabling the restricted Nvidia driver in the OS. The 2.6 kernel uses a function call that tries to override the native Nvidia AGP process. Also, in the Screen section of xorg.conf, add the following line:

Option "NvAGP" "1"

After spending most of last weekend working on video driver problems, those are the commands that made things work for me.

Now that I've got WoW and Civilization IV working in Linux, I no longer have any need for that other partition.

Quite probably, once I got the Nvidia driver working properly, I ran the nvidia-settings command from a terminal window. This installs the Nvidia X Server Settings application to your menu, allowing greater control of your video card and monitor.

Edit: I just noticed that you're running KDE 3.5 over Mint. Would that boot option work for Mint KDE CE as well?

It should work for any distro. Try it from the boot screen at first, just add it after the existing command line options. Once I verified stability using agp=off at the command line, I edited the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include it.

I tried installing KDE 3.5 over the Mint 4 Gnome distro I was running, it was ugly. I then downloaded and installed the KDE CE DVD on a new partition and have been using it exclusively since getting the video issues corrected.

As for your ongoing network issues, I always get networking running using the CD prior to install. I've always had better luck with the installation doing it that way.

Still can't figure out how to even use the terminal right let alone use the proper comands to install these NVIDIA drivers. I really like how fast the OS is, I think I will be using this more and more as I get used to it and figure out how to actually use the terminal :).

I still have that problem.

To install the Nvidia drivers, boot to the X splash screen, then change your session type to 'command line', then login. The Nvidia drivers will not install from a terminal window. Navigate to the directory where you downloaded the Nvidia driver, cd /home/username/desktop (or whatever your path is). Then use the sudo and the sh command to run the install file. The command looks something like this:

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.80-pkg1.run

You will be asked for your sudo password, then the install will begin.

Very few (if any?) boot options are distro specific, IIRC, so you should be good to go and give this a try on any distro.

Cool.

Quite probably, once I got the Nvidia driver working properly, I ran the nvidia-settings command from a terminal window. This installs the Nvidia X Server Settings application to your menu, allowing greater control of your video card and monitor.

It should work for any distro. Try it from the boot screen at first, just add it after the existing command line options. Once I verified stability using agp=off at the command line, I edited the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include it.

title Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.24-21-generic
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic root=/dev/sda7 ro quiet splash agp=off # Again, bold for emphasis only.
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-21-generic

Excellent! I had troubles with Envy and enabling the Nvidia driver using the restricted driver manager, or so I thought. After going the hard route and doing the manual compile and install of the driver, the agp fixes I posted above solved the problem.

As any historian knows, this is true. Not to far from where I live here on the Fox river, just a few miles down, (or up as it flows north), the river, is "Lost Dauphin" park. This was the home of the heir to the throne of France. When unable to cash in his princeship for kingship of France, he stayed and of course, now the trail for dethroned royalty living in Wisconsin was blazed.

There are many other quasi royal home seekers that have come to Wisconsin. Al Capone had his summer home in northern Wisconsin. John Dillinger was also sighted on several occasions. While not exactly royalty as we usually think, I believe they rose to power in much the same way.

It only stands to reason that any Czar heirs that escaped execution ended up in Wisconsin.

11-11-2008, 08:37 AM
Hello all...Old Saw PM'd me and reminded me that it had been nearly a month since I last "Post doped." WHAT THE HELL??? Like I would post dope.

Actually, I was on last on the 20th of October, which surprises me.

A moment of Mr. Gillette honesty before resuming my usual BS--

It's been a difficult Autumn...in a world of "freelancing" when the economy falls apart, the last thing people have money for is music lessons for their kids, or this or that-- so you look toward the world of "temping", sitting behind a desk doing mindless data entry projects for some big corporate entities.

This has been dry.

Consequently, Mr. Gillette has been (1) broke but surviving, by circling the wagons (2) very depressed. This latter condition is something that only RichGem seems to know about-- revisit "I'll take Mr. Gillette is off his Meds for 200, Alex!"

I know it's hard for you regulars here to realize, but the "genious" that is the essence of Mr. Gillette is often controlled and regulated by daily doses of medication.

So, put simply, I've been bummed. Add to that that a few health issues have come along, some as a result of putting things off. Here's one you'll find entertaining:

Dr: Does that big hernia up there next to your diaphragm, that ventral hernia, does it hurt?"

Mr G: Not really.

Dr: "When did first notice it?"

Mr. G: "Uh...I think sometime in about 1989 or 1990."

THAT KILLED! So I had this surgery the other day, last Thursday-- and now I'm back online because I'm still spinning on Vicodin AND my meds.

Anyway-- I hurt like hell, and I can't sit very long. Shoulda left it alone.

I miss you guys...I'll be back.

Now, a couple of pieces of good news (1) I'm still alive. (2) I still take even longer to shave, because it's the highlight of my day. (3) I finished all the projects around the house long ago, so there's not much to do (4) I start a long-term job with decent pay starting Monday. (5) I still have half a bottle of Vicodin left...anyone have Brett Favhre's number?

I think about my little friend Corey about every evening when I watch Seinfeld. The other night he was humming a little song from Les Mis.

So don't be afraid to PM me and draw me out.

I did not grow a long beard, although I asked if I could bring my own mug/brush/soap and razor to the VA hospital to prep my chest before surgery and they just looked at me like I was from another planet.

Let's see...what else? I dunno...gotta run...but I'll be back.

Post doping can mean either of two phases:

The period of time immediately after taking his Vicodin, and continuing until the effects wear-off; or
The period of time after the effects of the Vicodin have worn-off.

I see, by the poster's questions, that he was in Phase One when he posted it.

Off the top of my head, the only program that reads RAW is "gimp." Which, is comparable to photoshop, but is frankly, complicated to use for someone not familiar with photoshop. There are other photo editors similar to paint, but I don't use them and can't remember their names. I don't know if they read RAW or not. Also openoffice has a draw/photo component which I've never used, so don't know what it can or can't do.

What is RAW format? Is it better than JPG? Do you need a special camera to use this format? Essentially, what are the advantages?

As always, Wikipedia to the rescue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format). I can't say that I take full advantage of the RAW format, and often times find it annoying going through the step of tweaking the photos. But, I'm used to it now and don't want to change back.

If you have a spare weekend, learn GIMP, you'll thank me later. There's just really no comparison between GIMP and the rest of linux photo manipulation software. Again, though, GIMP does take some learning as it is similar to Photoshop in its capabilities (though there are long internecine conflicts concerning whether GIMP is a good Photoshop replacement, or doesn't stack up as a pro tool). For most punters (read point and shoot blunderers like me or amateur photographers who want to do some simple manipulations/masking/etc) GIMP will be more than adequate.

Confuzius
11-12-2008, 07:03 AM
The new verison of gimp. (2.6?) is alot nicer, as it keeps everyting together in one window, more like Photoshop.

Learning gimp when you already know Photoshop is abit harder, just because things aren't where you expect them to be, but it's definately a good thing to learn.

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that it's insanely complicated to the uninitiated. Maybe I'll look into a bit more in depth if I ever get some time, which is not likely with the new weimaraner/vizsla duo, aka, Double Trouble.

See...this is what I'm talking about. Just when it starts to get back on topic here with something about the Czar of the Cheddar Curtain, or a discussion of a good fish restaurant, or something amusing about two morons blowing up a car in Wisconsin while siphoning gas and using a lighter... JUST when it gets on to the topic of NOTHING, somebody has to bring up questions about LINUX..."How do I stop a drive from mounting during startup?" "Has anyone tried Puppy Linux as an OS?" "Does anyone use mojhale?" Nonsense like that.

My first day without vicodin. Brett stopped by, we tossed a few balls around, we went down the road to Halas Hall and "pantsed" Rex Grossman, and Brett was gone.

Me...I'm restless...too much sitting around. So I'm converting my complete COMPLETE "Ozzie and Harriet" set on Video to DVD. This keeps me busy every 70 minutes or so. I had a rattle in the exhaust system of my car, so I fixed it this morning...but I'm sure riding around on a mechanic's creeper wasn't a good idea. Still...it's quiet.

And Dennis is right...I usually get through the Fall holding onto the promise of Michigan's Deer season. This year it is not to be. A man's gotta get out in the woods and KILL something now and then and eat him some MEAT!!!!!

So the camraderie of deer camp is missing-- the same old stories, where no one talks about Linux, and the default answer is "LIKE HELL!" or (as only in Michigan) the inevitable "Sh*t, TOO!" Now really...what does that mean?

To put myself in the mood, I'm thinking of two of the old geezers I usually hunt with, sitting at a table:

"That's 15-2,15-4,15-6 and pair makes 8 and two for his heels."

"LIKE HELL!"

"Sh*t Too!" Now listen here, I've been playing cribbage with you for a good many years and goddammit, you're a damn liar, you are!"

"Sh*t too yourself, goddamnit...that's 15-4, you sumbitch!"

"Now wait just a gaddam minute here you _______. Ooops...yeah, you're right, I think, but wait..let me count em agin...well HELL...pour me another shot will ya? OH! Look here! 15-2,15-4,15,6 15-EIGHT!!!! There it is.

"BULLSH*T! There ain't no such of a thing right there. You're a goddamned drunk liar.

"I ain't gonna play with you then."

"Don't then. Who cares?"

"It's been 5 days...why don't you change them damn socks."

"Oh, go to hell."

**********

See...that's the kind of love and affection you can only get at a Michigan Deer Camp...so if any of you guys want to have me bring my big ass tent up and set it up, just for a drunken cribbage game, I'd be all for it.

CORY...where's the best Fish Fry this Friday?

Well, back off/on topic, I'll probably have some serious linux fodder for you all in the next few days. Two days ago, my 13 month old laptop decided to cook itself. Both the motherboard and video card had traces of melted solder on them, and needless to say the laptop is now a $1,100 brick.

So I went out and bought a new desktop today, and I'm still in the process of setting up the Vista partition. I'm planning on having a 200 gig Ubuntu partion as well.

Let's see, AMD Phenom Quad core, 2.8 GHz with 4MB of cache on 2 different levels, a total of 1343MB of video memory, and 7 Gb of RAM (yeah, that's not a typo... seven). I'm guessing with ubuntu this thing will FLY....

So here's the question. I've got the RAM to justify using the 64 bit version of Ubuntu... will I have that much trouble dealing with drivers and programs in the 64 bit version? More so than the standard 32 bit?

That sounds like a very manly machine. I'll be curious to see how it works out.

...but, before I do. Confession time. I got home, plugged the camera into the laptop, downloaded the doggy pics, went to B&B to post--wait a minute. No internet. Now, in a lapse of judgment, I rebooted the modem and minutes later you, Dennis, and Ray were tearing into me. :001_rolle:biggrin:

What I should have done was start crying, pull my hair out, and come running to the warm embrace that is Linux Mint.

Yes, that would've been the correct approach. But, you're forgiven. And, Penguin parents, minty or otherwise, are quite nurturing. Lesson learned for next time.

Is the name a reference to that scene in Pulp Fiction? Great movie, disturbing character.

no. It stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program

Pulp Fiction... UGH. Got 3/4 through the DVD and shut it off. Couldn't get into it at all. Horrible flick (sorry), despite the rave reviews.

Sick, just plain sick. I turned it off after John Travolta just sort of nonchalantly has his gun go off accidentally and kills one of his gang in the back seat of the car they are all riding in. Thankfully I missed most of the movie up to that point as well.

Seriously, and nearly on topic, I remember the first time I tried to get a wireless card working with Linux. I was in a restaurant with some people (normally I don't break out the electronics in restaurants, but it's a casual place, and it was the last time we had a chance to work on my friend's computer; he was leaving that night and lives 1200 miles away). Anyway, we're working on his computer, and the waitress (cute little thing) asks "what are you doing, anyway?". My friend says: "oh, trying to get my wireless working so we can get our porn in here."

I was like: :scared: Last time I do him a favor.

True story.
