Are you still having the internet issues?
Try opening up a terminal and typing "sudo dhclient eth0".
If that doesn't work, please copy/paste the contents of your /etc/dhclient.conf file.

Ok...I couldn't wait. The command in the end came up with nothing and it ended up sleeping. Sorry that I don't have specifics, but the computers are in two different rooms at the moment and I'm a bit pressed for time.
I would post the contents of that folder, but it doesn't seem to exist on my system. I tried several different ways to look. I tried to open it with pico, which just opened a new file with the name. I tried browsing through the root folders via the GUI and came up with bupkis. I also tried accessing the /eth directory via the terminal with "cd /eth" Again, nothing...
Again, I appreciate everyones' patience and assistance! Thank you, and I'm not giving up!
Edit: I just typed eth...I'm not sure if I got some wires crossed between /etc and eth0....let me go back and try this again...

heh
/etc is the directory where most of your system-wide config files are stored. dhclient is.. I *think*, what mint uses to configure network interfaces using dhcp.
Sorry I can't be much help; I use Linux on my main machine for everything, but I'm familiar with Slackware which has a few differences from the various Debian-based distros.

Sorry to derail this thread, but I do have an actual linux question for you guys...
The new release of Mandriva Linux was released today, and I downloaded and burned the CD... I decided on a fresh install because on my current Mandriva partition, it always claims that the urpmi database is either locked or inaccesable. Therefore I decided on a clean install since I only use it for fun...
The problem is, I can't get the live CD to boot. I get the splash screen, and the ability to add optional parameters to the command line, but it simply won't start up. I've tried adding noapic, nolapic, acpi=off, pci=nomsi, and irqpoll, al to no avail. When I boot with noapic or nolapic I get two lines back that say audit and then a string of numbers.... any of the other options result in a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Not a command line, just a cursor, nothing else. Any ideas on how I can get this live CD to boot correctly?
Back to semi-off-topic, I just got my first straight razor in the mail today! I'm very excited about it, but I was hoping to use a fresh install of mandriva to order my hones, strops, and pastes with.... I guess I'll just have to wait to use the straight.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try burning it again; you might have gotten a bad burn.
Did you try deleting the .RPMLOCK and .LOCK files in /var/lib/urpmi/? (when RPM isn't doing anything)

I did try to reburn the CD, and also tried to check the checksum o the burnt CD... to no avail...
I've never heard of deleting RPMlock, so I'll try that next. I've had great luck in the past with Mandriva, so I'm partial to sticking with it. That being said, I'm pretty curious to see the new Ubuntu in a little less than than month:biggrin:

Got fedora 9 w/ kde4 up and running in a VM, keeps giving me a pop up about Pulse not working, switching to alsa, but the pop up will not go away. I'm chalking that one up to a virtualization issue for now.
Still havn't had time to play around with it, also downloaded mint5 gnome but havn't set it up yet.
I'm thinking about checking out debian, but I'm not as steadfast on the "free" stuff and am worried that it will get difficult to get all my codecs and graphic drivers working.

I'm not very familiar with Debian, but as I understand it, to get all the non-free stuff, you just need to add the (I think) "multiverse" repo... in any case, it's just a matter of adding the right repo to the correct config file(s).

Since I work in a data center console room, I figured I'd pick the brains of my colleagues in regards to the sketchy internet connection on the desktop. No one is real familiar with Linux (a shame, I know!), but I did get some interesting advice.
I mentioned that I had partitioned my HD and on the original side, we'll call it A, the internet works. On side B though, nada. I don't know if I've clarified this to you guys very well yet (this past week has been a blur), but I still have Mint with the KDE 3.5 desktop on side A that has working internet, but is glitchy. On side B, I tried a fresh install of several other distros with both KDE and Gnome versions of said distros. Currently, side B is housing Mint 5.0 KDE.
Upon hearing all this, it was suggested to me that possibly partition A isn't sharing it's drivers nicely with partition B, hence the problems with all the other distros. Even Ubuntu 8.4, which worked flawlessly when it was the sole "king of the castle." I was advised to do a fresh install over the entire HD with the distro I want and go from there. This seems like sound advice. Any thoughts?

I was always under the impression that the two partitions were treated as separate drives, with no sharing or dependencies between them. In that case I wouldn't think there would be any issues with drivers, as each separate partition and install would have all of its own required drivers. Then again, if I boot into linux, then shutdown and boot into vista, Vista's clock is 6 hours ahead of the real time.... So basically I have no idea what I'm talking about, and you should disregard this post.
In unrelated news, I'm still working on my Mandriva install. I re-burned the CD, and tried all of the boot options again... no dice. I'm currently re-downloading the ISO, and I'll try again. I was able to delete both of the .LOCK files from the urpmi directory, and the package manager would open, but always said that files on the ftp server could not be found. Tried using the update manager, and it told me that no updates could be found. So as in the above paragraph, I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'm still trying and determined. I am looking forward to trying out Ubuntu 8.10 in a few weeks when the final version is released.

Yeah, pretty much. You *can* set them up to share stuff, but that's a bit complicated and can cause some issues, so I doubt the installers did that.
Then again, if I boot into linux, then shutdown and boot into vista, Vista's clock is 6 hours ahead of the real time.
Sounds like a time zone issue. Nothing to do with drivers; there's a clock on your motherboard, and both OSes are setting it to different times. Linux generally stores Greenwich Mean Time in the system clock, and translates it to your local time. Windows just uses your local time.

For one thing, there is a ton of really cool free software. It's not Micro$oft. It's more customizable. It is far less likely to get attacked by viruses, worms and Trojan horses.

Does the internet still work under Windoz? 'Cause I'm thinking that at this point, with the info above, that the problem isn't w/ Linux but either between your computer and the wall or with your ISP. I know it sounds dumb, but did you check all your connections? Did you verify that your ISP is up? Maybe your ethernet card /wifi adapter is dead or malfunctioning?

Windows isn't an option anymore as the copy that was on the PC more than likely came off the back of a truck somewhere and I never did have a physical disk or license code.
Well, I've been left turned up on my head. I'm posting this from the desktop in my new installation of Mint 4.0 Gnome, which after again dealing with some screen resolution issues, works like a million. I wrote it off earlier as not working not because I couldn't configure the internet, but because it booted to a black screen. My wife had the intuition to do the CRTL+ALT+ (plus/minus) keys until something workable appeared. (Why didn't I think of that? :001_rolle) Once in on the Live CD, the internet worked "out of the box." We thanked the powers that be, installed it on the entire disk, and called it a day.
Any thoughts on possible reasons for the others not working? Rich, you mentioned potential issues with the ethernet card and ISP. Is it possible that the other distros/versions didn't play nice with my hardware, but Mint 4.0 does? Then again, that wouldn't explain why Ubuntu did work, but now does not.
My head hurts and I'm probably better off not thinking too hard on this one. Mission accomplished, and all that jazz.

It's certainly possible, but still really weird esp. given that mint esentially is the same as ubuntu. if this is wifi, it'd say yes, someone (mint) has a driver that ubuntu doesnt. if we're talking about an ethernet cable set up, any distro should work.
In any case, it's very weird. I think I'm going back to my originial theory that you're just making all this up so as to a) learn more and b) extend this thread.

I'm no expert in interfaces, by any means -- I totally rely on autoconfigs and guis for this. But, I believe that your method controls the dhcp config of the interface (routing, etc.) whereas ifup controls the interface itself (up/down & what interface). Could be too, that there's more than one way to skin a cat; usually is with *nix.

Well, the actual interface control is done with ifconfig. DHCP is just automatic configuration based on replies from a server on your network (usually your router) where your computer basically brings the interface up and says "Hey, anyone there? How should I set myself up?" If that isn't running, that could be the problem.
At least on Slackware, what you actually use most of the time (/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1) is actually just a fairly simple wrapper script around ifconfig and dhcpcd to set up the interface and configure it statically from entries in rc.inet1.conf, or using dhcp if that's what you specify.
I assume on a Debian-based distro, ifup is something similar---a wrapper around ifconfig and dhclient.

Yes, I went through the Networking help option of Ubuntu and one of the suggestions was to cycle the interface using ifdown and ifup. It went down no problem, but based on the output I received and the example output in the help, I don't believe it came back up properly, if at all. This of course is if it was ever really up in the first place.

Well guys, I've tried numerous re-burns of the Mandriva live CD to no avail, and urpmi won't let me upgrade to the new version, it will only let me update packages, so I found another way.
I did a lot of reading about rpm and the command line, and taught myself how to remove repositories and add new ones from the terminal. I was lucky enough to find easyurpmi.org, and add the repositories for the new release, even though Mandriva doesn't support a live update. That means that I'm now in the process of installing a reported 1382 packages from the command line... I've always said that I don't know a whole lot about the terminal.... I guess its trial by fire time!
Does this qualify me for Minister of masochism, or would "Czar of self inflicted stress"be more appropriate?

Well, it ended up taking me about 8 hours last night.... every 5th or so package needed to install something else, and gave me a list of 8 choices to choose from, all of which looked pretty close to each other to me. After finally finishing, I am proud to say that it booted up into the new version, but KDE failed to update, and now KDE 3.5 seems to have some issues.
I also have some problems logging in, instead of the typical splash screen I am used to seeing, I now get a simple GUI with a clock and text that says "welcome to Linux on localhost", or something very similar. Below is the standard login box, but with options on the side for different users. Weird thing is that in addition to myself and root, there are other users listed that appear to be named after the folders on my old install.... weird.
Anyways, I showed up to work today, and apparently everybody else decided not to come into work, and also decided not to tell me.... So I'm back home and I'll be seeing what I can figure out.

WooHoo!!! After a whole day of fiddling, I finally managed to get Mandriva 09 running, along with KDE 4.1..... although it is running currently in "safe mode". If I restart and boot back into the standard edition, will I lose all of my changes, or will the regular mandriva boot option pick up the changes I made here since it works?
Currently I am not running 100% stable... the mandriva control center (kinda like window's control panel) crashes on occasion, and I don't seem to have a title bar on any of my windows. Granted, I can still quit by using file->quit, but the title bar where the usual X is, is missing.
All in all, not bad.... it's working, but barely. I'll have to play with it a bit more, but so far KDE 4.1 seems pretty awesome. It definitely has a little ways o go before being mainstream, but it has a great look/feel. Once they work out the little issues it should be awesome!

10-15-2008, 06:46 PM
Yeah, so far 4.1 is definitely not quite stable yet.... but what IS working is pretty nice. I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. For the most part, the only thing that has crashed is the mandriva control center, which is obviously distro specific.
But does anybody have any idea why my title bars might be missing? Granted, ctrl+q isn't that difficult, but not being able to move the windows is. I've tried rebooting in both KDE4.1 and gnome, and the title bars seem to be missing from both.... and no, this is not a mandriva "feature". I'm just plain confused. It is getting to the point where I'm considering opening up rpm/synaptic and just downloading every single package available.
I'm just sitting here at the laptop, and watching the presidential debate..... I'm not sure if I'd rather throw something at Linux or at the TV!
RichGem
10-15-2008, 06:58 PM
no clue why the title bars are missing, but if you hit alt+f3, do you get the window menu up? If so, see if "no border" is selected and deselect it if so. why it would default to no border, who knows.
homebrewer
10-15-2008, 07:45 PM
well, if I hit alt+F3, nothing happens at all..... BUT, I did move the mouse in a quick motion to the upper right corner of the screen to mess with something in the tray. Moving the mouse to that corner quickly in mandriva will show all windows, sort of in an alt-tab manner, but allows them to be clickable.
Anyways, once I did that, I suddenly got a menu bar in firefox! Now that I try other windows, they all seem to have menu bars, but much different than the ones I had previously in KDE 3.5. So once again, I have very little idea what I did, or how I did it, but somehow Linux was smart enough to figure out what I wanted:biggrin:
I'm in such a good mood after today's progress, that I'm going to offer up a PIF to all of you who listen to my incessant questions and ridiculous ignorance about linux. So what better way to se them than to give them away to someone that loves them. Since you guys have help (or at the very least put up) with me, I'm giving these away. First person that can PM me as to how Derby can coat their blades in Chromium, ceramic, platinum, tungsten, AND polymer, while keeping them almost free, wins. As much as I liked the look of the new KDE, I think I'll wait on a better release. I'm current;y using Gnome, and it has been treating me quite a bit nicer. I've now figured out the title bar situation, and gnome reminds me of my very first Linux experience with ubuntu, a few years ago.... Ahhh, memories.....
In any case, my PIF is still open to all in this thread. I'm leaving tomorrow (thursday) morning, and won't return into town until Sunday evening. Entries are acceptable until then, and the winner will be decided that night. I figure that since I got such a great deal on a straight from a gent on this board, that I can only begin to pass on the favor.
So for all you fellow linux geeks, come up with an interesting story as to how Derby combines all of that fancy tech into such a cheap blade.... send me a PM.
Until then, I'm going to keep exploring what is available in the new packages...

I know! I actually got slammed today at work. Yesterday the desktop support guy came in and installed a new PC at my desk (these things run 24/7 and the previous one sometimes took 1/2 to boot). So...setting it up again was...not fun. Not to mention that I didn't have my mainframe emulation software installed. Well, there's half my job I can't do now!
I need to get to bed...work again tomorrow...wife's out of town so I don't have anyone to slap the wrist and nag recommend in a practical voice that I should get some sleep. :tongue_sm

I am happy to say that I successfully updated my Mandiva partition to the newest release, all from the command line. That is HUGE for me. Although KDE 4 isn't quite ready for prime time, it is very pretty and has great potential. I'd guess that in the next release or two it will be fantastic. Until then, I'm running Gnome 2.x just for stability. Maybe when Ubuntu 8.10 is releasedfor good, I'll have the guts/ability/arrogance to try dealing with ndiswrapper on this cursed broadcom wireless card. To call me a "newb" would be an understatement; but with your gent's help, combined with a whole lot of coffee and patience, I just might make it.

Anyways, Cory, not sure what happened to your monitor, I vaguely remember that you were supposed to add the display section to your xorg.conf, but don't know if somebody gave you the code, as I disappeared for a bit. If you're still looking for it, add after the line "DefaultDepth 24"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection
That will force the resolution instead of probing for it.

Actually-- and it was going to be a surprise for Cory -- but once elected, we'll be handing out free editions of "Sable Hat" Linux (based on Fedora, of course). However, at the moment, we're having trouble with core dumps every time a bottle of Stoli is nearby.

Has anybody else here noticed that you tend to get much faster wireless speed in linux than you do in windows? (once wireless is working that is....) I've been messing with it a bit more this morning and checked my speeds in both Mandriva and Vista, and I got more than 50% faster speeds in Mandriva! Not sure if this is due to Vista's bloat or something else, but I was quite surprised to see that much of a difference.
On a totally unrelated note, is anybody else here obsessed with woot.com? I've been checking that site everyday for at least 2 years now, and I refresh the page every couple of minutes during a woot-off (like today). Problem is, I've never bought anything off of woot.... actually, I've never even considered buying anything off of there, yet I can't seem to stop checking it. Am I the only one?

nah, like I said, I use b43 which is native (sort of, still need the binary firmware), ndiswrapper (using shared irqs) probably does account for some performance hit I would imagine, although I know lots of people rave about how it's better than b43. I don't buy it, not for my chipset anyway.

This has been debated almost as much as KDE vs. Gnome. LOL. There are sound samples around of Linus Torvalds saying "linux".... in the earlier clips, he says it the Euro way "LIE nix". In the newer clips, he's adopted a more American pronunciation "LYNN-ix."
So, if Linus can say both... there you have it...(KDE and LYNNix)
*Linus also prefers KDE.

I'm back in the Linux game! I got a dual boot system going now, and am using Linux for note-taking, internet surfing, and watching videos. I'm slowly trying to expand into other programs and will hopefully one day be able to switch over completely. I just can't stay away from the Ubuntu.

TODAY ONLY (Tuesday October 28th, 2008)
Codeweavers is giving away Crossover products for free.
Their site is getting so hammered they set up a temporary light version with only the free products.

If you don't know they are the main commercial contributors to wine, and have optimized versions to run different windows programs in linux and osx (bsd? I dunno?)
I havn't tried it myself, but it could be an easier solution for thos programs you can't quite get working properly in wine.

With laptops getting so cheap, there is really no reason why everybody shouldn't have at least one Linux machine in their home. When one laptop is replaced the old one should immediately be converted to Linux.

It's also a great preventative for gout, heart worms, zombie hands, and explosive diarrhea.
Actually, most "normal" folks SHOULD be running linux, they would have far fewer problems in terms of virus, malware, etc.
Windows 7 looks to be a "netbook" clawback, however. I will reserve judgment. I expect it to be lightyears better than vista, as most of the pain is already over. Most old software/hardware that required new drivers is already upgraded, obsoleted, so no more driver issues. Also, to be fair, Vista is lightyears ahead of XP in terms of OS security. But, it still suffers from a few fundamental windows flaws (files can be downloaded as executables explicitly? without changing permissions??) and the biggest flaw being of course windows users.

For some reason I started thinking of something this morning.... How did the penguin become the Linux mascot? When I think of penguins, the words slow, generally stupid, bloated, and useless appendages (bloat) pop into my head, none of which I would use to describe linux.
So does anybody know where it started? I'm curious.

I'm too lazy to google the history of Tux right now, but IIRC, Linux Torvalds thought that penguins were cute and non-threatening or something like that. Either that or he dreamed it one night after eating herring.

Linus Torvalds was bit by a penguin once. And also he thought that they were cool/cute.
I am NOT JOKING. He really WAS bit by a penguin once. Just thought I needed to add that as alone, it looks like I am joking.

Hey guys,
I know I've been out for a while; it's a long story I don't feel like getting into at the moment. I'm taking a crack at getting some accounting software from the office running on Ubuntu and I've hit one critical (and stupid) snag.
I have a virtual machine with Ubuntu 8.04 installed by way of VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) (I recommend it over VMWare since the full version of this is free for personal use), and I'm trying to build Wine 1.1.7 from source. It looks like the whole build attempt is succeeding without visible errors, but by the end of it I have nothing to show. I've successfully built other programs from source, so I'm hoping somebody here can help me overcome this hurdle.
I'm not sure why I started here instead of the Ubuntu forums either... :blushing:

Well, at least you're concise.
I can always wipe the image and try on a different distro. Or I probably still have room for a new image with a different distro.
Edit: Argh... I'm an idiot... the build went fine.... I just had a typo...

No need to build it from source, just add the wine repos to your sources list:
http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb
It runs the development packages so 1.1.7 is what you get.

Two days with no replies? Seriously guys? I don't want to have to find another place to procrastinate... so here's an odd one for you.
My newer mandriva partition is working beautifully now, even with KDE4.1. I have an odd problem with my wireless mouse (MX revolution) though. In general, the mouse works just fine, although I haven't been able to map all of the buttons yet. The weird thing is, when I open up the add/remove programs, or try and update my urpmi database. After I close either one of those, the mouse is very slow to respond, and skips across the screen in a jerking motion.
Any ideas? Is this a mouse issue, a wireless usb reciever issue, a KDE issue? It only happens if I have opened one of those programs and closed it. If I have a bunch of other things open, and load the processor, it works just fine.... only those two.

After installing several various Ubuntu and Mint distros on my wife's desktop, we also experienced a similar mouse issue in regards to the slow response and jerkiness. I still don't know what the root cause was, but our solution was to use a different connector. The USB didn't work, so we clipped on a PS/2 adapter. PS/2, if you're not familiar, being the green, round connector with pins.
For what it's worth, hope this helps in some way.

Hmm, I never even thought of that... will a wireless USB key for a mouse even work with through a PS/2 adapter? Either way, my laptop (nor the docking station that it is usually plugged into at home) has PS/2 ports. The mouse hasn't been a major issue for me, I was just curious. In the mean time I just restart after an update or adding/removing programs... I figure I've been forced to do it all my life with windows, so I don't let it bother me too much:tongue:
