Hello everybody,

Since I've been first introduced to wet-shaving, I've been using one of those cheap Tweezerman brushes like this one: http://www.amazon.com/His-Tweezerman-Deluxe-Shaving-Brush/dp/B000KAAD5C/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1199144894&sr=8-3

But now I'm considering buying a more serious brush, probably one of these: http://www.shavemac.com/index.php?lang=en&area=men&sel=2&cat=3

But before I drop about 50 bucks on it, I'd like to know, would really make that big of a difference in terms of the actual shave? (not how quickly it would create a lather, I mean)

I haven't tried the Tweezerman brush, but I can say I couldn't be happier with my Shavemac. It's a beautiful, well-built brush that (knock on wood) has yet to lose a single hair. Okay, maybe one snuck by at some point, but I have looked, and have never seen one in the soap or in the sink.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you that a better brush will give you a better shave, for most it's just a means to an end. However, you're going to end up with a much higher quality product that will do a much better job of being a brush period. Any brush can whip up lather, it's up to you how you want to get there. A higher quality brush is going to also have a much different face feel, and I certainly imagine the Shavemac is going to be a lot better at staying hydrated and lather-ful than a Tweezerman. You don't have to have a high quality badger brush, but it certainly makes a difference. The lather will also be of better quality, and you'll get more out of your soaps and creams.

Great choice on the Shavemac, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Appreciate the help. I'll probably buy a Shavemac. Hopefully it will pay for itself with the soap economy.

I actually doubt the Shavemac will use less soap than the Tweezerman, being a larger brush. It should actually use more.

If you want to use the same amount of soap (again, you won't use less, but this one is at least nearly the same size) the Crabtree & Evelyn Best Badger is only $35 (and there's a $10 coupon on the Shopping forum), which is an excellent brush for the money. Leagues better than the Tweezerman, IMO.

Best of luck.
