Just spotted DMT now do a diamond extra extra fine hone.
Has anybody tried it yet?
There are a few people. I know Joel has one and recommends it over the Norton 4000/8000 because it cuts as fast as the 4k side of the Norton, but gives an edge like the 8k side (and costs about as much as the Norton). Of course YMMV etc. But if you were wondering if it can be used on razors, the answer is yes.
I have one.
It sounds like a good idea, but I've gotten better results with the Norton. I'm still learning to hone. Maybe my honing skills aren't good enough to get the best from the DMT.
As Björn stated - I'm quite a fan. Delivers a really lovely edge, and cuts quite quickly. With 2-3 DMT Diamond stones, you can really restore and tune up a razor VERY quickly!

I've been using various grades of wet and dry paper followed by a small belgium coticule and strop. I find the paper is relatively expensive and looses its cutting surface very quickly. Although I have been getting great results (by this I mean a smooth shave) on my hollow ground razors but struggling with a couple of wedges that need a lot of work.
The DMT gear looks almost affordable and it has a good reputation. I'll give them a go.
Thank you all for your helpful replies.

I haven't tried it yet as I can't figure out how to lap it.

It doesn't need lapping, it is guaranteed flat from the factory.

I love it. I used many stones and paper. I only use the DMT 8000 now. It will always be flat, no lapping.

All you need to hone is this? Does it also create a polished edge?

All of my old honing equipment has been given to family and friends. I now have a DMT course, DMT 8000, Thuringian and the Chinese 12k.Thats it.
My DMT 8000 had to be, for lack of better words, broken in. After a few sessions it now puts a great shaving edge on a razor. I can stoop here and be happy, but then go to the 12k. Wow
Hope that helps
