I'm abought to buy the classic HD online, but before I do, I wanted to make sure that I can use any brand of blade, i.e. the ones at the drugstore if need be. Or some of those deals on Ebay for 100 blades. In other words, the Merkur HD does or does not require their brand of blade?
thanks!

Dax,
You are free to use any brand of de razor blade that you wish.

That is correct. The HD will accommodate any brand of DE safety razor.

Do yourself a favour, get some Derby or Feather blades straight away, they are much smoother, and sharper than the Merkur blades. While the Merkur Platinum's have some loyal follower's a lot of people have problems with them. I for one find them to be very rough and irritating, but YMMV.

on the subject of blades, are these good?

one hell of a deal for all those, but how is the quality?

You can find Derbys on ebay for the same price, and IMHO, MUCH better.

I second the Derby recommendation. Or Israeli Personnas, also available on eBay cheap.

Based on what i've done so far with wet shaving, it seems like the hardest area to shave is the curve of the chin, lot of pulling going on there. I'm just using some blades I got from the drugstore right now. Are the Derby "Extra" blades on ebay the same as the ones you mentioned? Derby or Israeli for a tough beard? I'm really digging these bulk buys on ebay, just don't want to buy bulk junk!!

And he shaves TWICE a day!

If I was forced to choose I would definitely opt for the Derby blades, but the Israeli's are nice. You will find wet shaving much easier to deal with if you resist this silly urge to choose between products, just get one (at least) of everything that interests you and you will be much happier in the long run. After all, until you get the Israeli's you're only going to wonder what they are like, and that's the type of thing that can haunt you:biggrin:

Dax702,

Ya know, you could also contact LetterK and see if he has any blade samplers left--then you could try 5 or 10 packs of the 4 or 5 of the best blades out there and see what you prefer.

Just a thought--the Derbys are a great starting place! And many never move on to another blade.

The deal for 100 Derby blades for $11 shipped is over. I hope it comes back for 4th of July.

I just ordered a sampler from LetterK and he sent them right away. I tried the derby this morning for the first time and all I can say is wow...I am tempted to place a bulk order already...

This was a great idea to put together the sampler pack. You can try the Israelis, Feathers, Gillettes, Merkurs and Derbys for a great price and convenience...With this group you should find the blade for you.

Thanks again John.

Hi all,

Been lurking while reading about what type of gear I would need and decided on the Derby's or Israeli's for the blades.

Just wanted to let ya know that I just found the Derby's up at eBay, 100 for $15 4th of July special just now. :tongue_sm
