I know , know... but this Silver Aristocrat has such a nice head on it you can almost ALMOST go with the speed of a M3 over your face and the Arko is just slick lubricating slippery stuff. I wouldnt try quick with any other razor. except perhaps the new Injector judging by the comments of Joel. but promise Ill go slow with it.

After 20 years of using disposables, I scored two Super Speeds via eBay. Yesterday and today marked my first "old-school" shaves--pretty smooth, but the number of passes and the irritation tell me that I'll need lots of practice to improve my technique. Right now, I don't have much sense about how to use the blade to create the pressure required to cut the whiskers, while at the same time NOT scraping my skin.

Getting better with the Swedes. I've ruled out the Swedes and the Merkur Classic combo. The Swedes and the SS are better. Still not as good as the Derbys for me, but we'll try it for another couple days. Grade: B-
This Sandalwood from Saint Sue is gaining more playing time in my rotation. I'm really starting to love it. I get more comments from my wife with it than anything else right now.

Jeff, just a little. No way near Proraso. But yes, it's very nice. It's my favorite out of the Arko line. The only issue, and I've mentioned this before, is that at work, they use a bathroom cleaner that smells just like it. It's a good smell, but I'd rather not think of my work bathroom when lathering up in the morning. I suspect they'll move on to another cleaner in the near future and that memory will fade. That's my hope at least.

Ah the morning sniff of bathroom cleaner. I have the same problems with Arko shave stick it smells A$$ . as in really a cleaning solution for sanitizing I really..really am bummed out by that the lather it self is brilliant for the money you pay for it. does a very good job. just smear it over the face then lather with the brush on the face no need to use a bowl I think you damage the lather more by using a bowl..its meant to be instant pooof lather in on ya face material. imagine Arko shave stick would contain the smell of menthol/mint your have proraso on a stick. ?

Hi John,
the SCS shave oil is okay, before this one I've used only Almond and Olive oil and they are much thicker than this one.
I've also tried Somersets, but that is scented, smells a little bit like eucalytus/menthol/tea tree added with some other EO's.
IMO, SCS or PSO(which I will try by the next time) is better, 'cause they aren't so overscented like Somersets and they are a bit cheaper...

Hmm, strangely disappointing shave today. Everything seemed to be in place, great shave soap, new brush and a new plan of attack for using the slant; unfortunately this shave was less than the sum of it's parts. I have no complaints about the MB soap, it lathered like a dream and the smell even covered up that offensive new brush odour. I have no complaints about the Superior Brush either, it lathered the soap even better than the Men-U brush. The tips were pleasantly soft and the density of the bristles meant that it gave a good exfoliation. Thing is, whatever I did I couldn't get the lather onto my face, it just kept ending up on the side of the brush:eek: I have made no secret about my lack of practical ability, but I draw the line at not being able to use a brush properly! I have never had a problem like this in the past, any ideas?
Joel, I noticed the Superior Brush in your SOTD post, have you anything to add to your initial comments about this brush?

I'm on vacation, so I have all kinds of time to mess around while shaving.
N-S, ear-to-chin, and jaw-to-nose were all done with a straight razor. It is much closer to being as sharp as it needs to be, but still needs some hone work. I have some mild irritation from it.

Another wretched shave today, a thoroughly miserable experience. Like yesterday everything seemed to be in place for a great shave, but something went wrong somewhere. The Superior (which hasn't lost a single hair yet, BTW) whipped up a great lather with the Taylor Rose and my Futur was loaded with a new Feather. However, I couldn't get the razor to glide, it kept stuttering on my skin and after three passes my face felt so sore and beaten up that I just gave in (apologies to anyone who is offended by my lack of commitment.) Obviously my karma is seriously out of balance!

AJS,
Make sure you have enough water in your lather. When I started wetshaving, I didn't and the razor skipped. I have since started using Ron's technique of soaking the brush in hot water, lifting it out and letting it drain (no shaking out of water), then lathering away in the bowl with the cream. This initially seemed like it would deliver too much water, but with some determination and a few extra swirls in the bowl has delivered much better lather. That said, if the lather never comes up, you may twirl the brush slowly and get a little bit more water out before lathering away...depends on how much water the brush holds and how much cream you are using (I recommend the dip and twist method of brush loading).

I figured I could be a bit more aggressive with the Schick than with my Vision, and maybe that would clear up my "trouble spot"--the lower lip area.
The result? My face felt smooth to the touch immediately after the shave--perhaps thanks to the Taylors avocado?!?--but after my aftershave was absorbed I could feel the familiar tell-tale traces of stubble beneath my lower lip.
Any advice out there for me? If I can't solve this problem, I may be forced to resort to re-growing my old goatee!

The lower lip, specifically the soul patch region, was a problem of mine for a long time. I don't know that I can verbally explain the technique breakthru that has worked for me, but I'll give it a shot. I have performed this technique with a Gillette Adj., Merkur HD, Merkur Slant Bar, and Merkur Progress but never with a Futur or Vision.
I press the top of the razor into my face with some legit pressure while the handle remains at a true 90 degrees from my face. Then I make a S-N pass with a small scooping motion (this is my final pass after the area has already been reduced). This should REALLY stretch the skin and force those little jerks to stand up so you can cut them down. This is the only way that I can trim this area smooth without irritation.
Another idea that I just had and will try tomorrow (if I remember) is to fill this area up with air (the old blowing the cheeks out trick) and then taking a few swipes.

Hi DJ.
My Shavemac is lower end Finest. I am very pleased with it.Absolutely fantastic with creams. Although it is machine made......it is dense and very comfortable to use. With a cream it makes masses of lather...which stays where it is needed. Some of my other brushes seem to absorb the lather and need to be encouraged to release it on to my face. I don't use it on soaps. As it wasn't too expensive ....I had it personalised as well. It is definately one of my favourites. The link is below.
Regards
Brian

First time trying the adjustable. It's been sitting on my desk for a couple weeks but I've been playing around with the various DEs I've aquired. I was impressed. SUPER easy to use. Really, it's hard to mess up with this one. Just like using a cartridge razor. No nicks, cuts, weepers, or any irritation of any kind. My complaint is that I just couldn't get as close as with a DE. As Joel, said in another post, the adjustable thing is more gimmick on this one. I just set it in the middle and went to town. I'm not sure what to do with it now. I love how it shaves, but am not completely happe with the results. Worlds better than a cartridge, but only 80% as good as a good DE shave. Then again, it's worlds better than a DE shave gone bad. The other thing is that it doesn't feel like you're using something old, which I sort of missed. The CVS blades worked just fine. Grade: B+

Lovin' the home shave after a bunch of travel. For those who love Vetiver, the Guerlain is phenomenal - quite a different take than the L'Occitane and perfect for summer. I will probably break it up for decants if people are interested - I have a bunch of the stuff.
*A bunch of people have asked my opinion on the T&H Sandalwood. I took some pictures today and will post a detailed review later this afternoon or evening.

Don't give up yet. For the longest time, I had to settle for having some minor stubble in the lower lip area. I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I would have to live with it, but I then stumbled across the technique I mentioned and have been smooth ever since. Even if this technique isn't the perfect solution for you, keep experimenting & you'll find the answer. Honestly, it might help if you go order some more shaving gear.
BTW, I tried the second technique this morning (cheek puffing) and while it isn't as good as the pressure method (for me) it did an OK job. Keep us posted.

Thomas , go easy the Russian blade that you got is about as sharp as the so called swedish or euro gillette but its is not as smooth the both are nonetheless very CLOSE atleast according to Ron but Randy got a different opinion about it.
my opinion is the blade is excellent and def. is better then a US Personna blade.
but I think my kitchen chef's knive is better then a Personna blade.
my advice would be not to use it in the blackhandle use the Gillette in the Fatboy which you have and use it on setting 6 for the first shave so you get a feel for the blade without damaging your skin and the next shave you can set the FB to a 7.
The FB is my best razor and I have a feeling will get you the best result for now this is only due to I have recently gotten the blackhandel Gillette aswell and im not impressed by the razor. the FB will add a natural weight to the strikes you gonna make. for testing new blades always go with the razors your most familiar with so you dont have two odds going against ya.
these russian Gillette's never nicked me !

The almond cake is ok it is just like the Kent soap. scent wise forget it the cake it self smells like almond when you first open it. but upon usage it doesnt smell like almond if smelling at all very much like the Kent soap which doesnt smell at all like wise.
I use the pre proraso to soften the beard its full summer here I cant take a 35 degree showers anymore..
Cucumber Toner very nice I spray it all over the face with a 2oz atomiser then with a cotton ball wipe the face clean..you would still be surprised how much dirt comes of your face after a deep shave !
Proraso milk a/s or skinfood all the same game is very very nice..milky but use a little bit on the face it gets absorbed really fast.
The brush lovely..scratchy good job on the soap and face oh the pre proraso is nice as a coolant aswell before you lather up . so basically you can get any lather to be a coolant if you use pre/post on the face first.

Well, I thought my Vision's adjustment knob was kaput, so I turned--in desparation!--to the Fat Boy for this morning's shave. I loaded her up with a new Merkur blade and went at it. Using some recent advice from Kyle re: lower lip technique, I surprised myself by getting a very decent shave. My problem spot, the lower lip, is noticeably cleaner than its been in a long time--still not totally stubble free, but much better. I tried the puffer fish technique, and also went at this area from every possible direction, rather than my typical SN-only passes. I'm still not sure what direction these little hairs are growing in, but I figure if I mow em down from the N, S, E and W, they don't stand a chance!
All this to say that asking questions and reading posts is the single best way to improve one's technique. Thanks, all!
BTW--I think my Vision is OK after all--the knob was just a tad stuck, and a good long soak in hot water seems to have freed it up--time for a cleaning!

Hi Scotto,
The soap is hardmilled just like Floris soaps. It lathers well and gives a very slick shave. I got it in a trade with Gordon. The same scent as English Fern. A wonderful soap indeed.

I've just realised that the wooden bowl costs $30 empty, how Penhaligon's can justify that I don't know!

In regards to the Pre de Provence shave cream, the jury is still out. Either I'm making an error in use or it is not so good. I plan on putting together a review once I've had a chance to use it a few more times. If anyone has used this cream successfully, give me a shout.
