View Full Version : Favicon - does B&B have one, cause I can't see it

I can see favicons on my links toolbar for just about all of my favorite sites, but none for B&B. It shows in the web address bar, but not in my links toolbar when using IE or on my bookmarks toolbar when using Firefox.

Any thoughts if it's a website issue or my browser? I have no issues with others, like ebay, ESPN, CNN, TechGuy.org, blackberryforums.com, Vonage, etc. B&B seems to be the only one that doesn't display in the favorites....

It's a browser issue. If it was the website it wouldn't show up at all. Further to that, I can confirm it works on three separate computers at this very moment.

I don't know how it works in IE, but in Firefox the favicon.ico is downloaded when you go to the site through the bookmark. I don't know exactly how long it stores it but it does eventually disappear.

It's never shown up for me, and I always go to the site from the bookmark, whether using IE or Firefox. Hmmm, strange.

Try going there to get it into your browser's cache. Uh, otherwise I don't know at the moment but I'll look into it a little more over the next 24 hours and get back to you.

Well, now it's going to bug me until I find a solution. I know it's not particularly important but compared to the usual tech problems I have to deal with this is more like a fun puzzle.

Update: Does look like there's something weird with IE regarding favicon. It may have to do with how it's included in the source of a page and that IE tends not to follow standards.

IE's behaviour as I can remember it in IE6, I don't know about IE7, was that favicons didn't show up unless you had the website favourited.

No idea what's up with the B&B favicon, but it works just fine in Opera and Firefox for me.

Firefox rocks. Been using it myself since version 0.7ish. And I just hate sub-optimal function.

kjjb0204: I think I was able to reproduce the problem in FF, but I need more info. Here's what I did: I added Google.ca to my bookmarks toolbar and it didn't have the favicon. Going to google through the link on the toolbar did make it show up. Try clearing your cache in FF (CTRL+SHIFT+DEL) and then activating the link to B&B from the toolbar. Of course, this is the closest thing I have to a solution at the moment and I get the impression you basically did this anyway.

Edit: Managed to reproduce your problem exactly. I'm now researching problems that can occur at the site.

I think the following snippet needs to be inserted in the B&B site code:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.badgerandblade.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

That should make it display on the toolbar; of course this would have be tested by an admin.

Favicon?

Favicon?

It's the little picture that shows up next to the address in the address bar. It's also supposed to show up in your bookmarks and bookmarks toolbar. For this site it's a mini (16x16) badger head logo.

30 seconds later edit: We're not able to get Firefox to show it in the bookmarks toolbar. I think I found a fix but short of injecting the code with Proxomitron or Greasemonkey to test it I won't know for sure, and the way today has gone I'll probably burn down my house instead.

Okay, here's the deal. I haven't figured out how to fix it directly. I screwed around with proxomitron a bit (and realized why I love that little proggy) but wasn't successful.

HOWEVER, I've come up with a solution...

First, download favicon.ico (http://www.badgerandblade.com/favicon.ico) to your computer. Then download this extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3176). Then go to Tools->Add-ons and find it in the list. Hit options. Pick "search by name", hit next, type in "badger" and uncheck "match case", hit next, it'll show you all the matches and hopefully B&B shows up in there. If it doesn't, fiddle around with searching until it does. Hit next again, select "replace favicons with" and find the file you downloaded at the start of this whole mess. Hit next and voila, you have your icon!

Boo ya.

its working for me now . Great work on the puzzle if I may add one thing.

it is much easier to find if you just search by URL and just type in Badgerandblade.com . thats how I did it at least after a couple of badger searches did not bring any results .

Interesting, I get a "W" instead of the Badger Head. I'm using FFI think all browsers get confused sometimes, so you're perhaps getting the Wikipedia "W" on B&B.
