View Full Version : DO you ever use more than one razor in one session?

I know I've bailed out on one that felt rough mid-shave.

Does anybody have a routine like:
(performs first pass with a slim adjustable loaded with a derby.)

then

"Hey, it's time for the second pass. It's time to get out the slant with the swede."

Um, no. That seems like just a pain. But that's just me.

what's so painful about it? Instead of one razor resting by the sink, there are two. set one down, grab another.

Ok, you've got me there. Maybe it just seems silly, I dunno. Or maybe the issue is having two razors with blades in them, and going through blades that much faster.

I'll venture to say that When I am using a str8, I will finish up with a DE at least 95% of the time.

silly = awesome.:w00t:

I guess I don't like going through my $.75/blade Swede's very quickly though. :(

I use 2 razors in a shave session quite frequently.

The last shave started out with two passes from a vintage Gillette Sheraton (which was disturbingly efficient at mowing down the weeks worth of growth that had accumulated ) and then switched to a SuperAdjustable to touch up 'round the edges.

I will also dual shave with a slant and HD -- I feel more comfy with the straight edge of the HD for sideburns and around the goatee.

It may or may not be a good idea, but I always leave the dance with the one I came with. I do rotate different razors on different days but always use the same one from start to finish. That's just me and in no way should be misconstrued to represent the thoughts and opinions of the other members of this fine forum.

What?!? And make the first razor jealous??

Nah... I couldn't be fussed to change the blade. If one razor doesn't work well for all 3 of my passes, it's got no business in my bathroom.

No never. personally I could not get a good shave that way.

Sometimes I bail out a razor with a dull blade with another that has a sharp one just to save time.

+1 - If I can't get a great shave using multiple passes with one razor, then I'd get rid of the razor. As others have said, I do rotate between razors on different days or weeks, but not during the same shave.

I don't do this very often. Sometimes however I will use on razor that is fairly mild to shave my neck and jawline. Everything else is with an HD. I usually get really good shaves if I do this. Most days though are just one razor.

I try to overcome shave dissatisfaction with the tool in hand. This may take several shaves to figure out. I try to think of it in terms of, what if this was the only razor I had? IMHO

Well, I do, but for the most part it is the curiousity. As I normally turn over some 20- 30 razors a month, I like to know how they feel. For me, a razor has to do a great job AGAINST the grain, and do it pretty much in one pass. If the first few strokes with a new razor don't do it for me, I put it aside and use one of my regulars.

I very often use my Vision with Bic Blade in it followed by my Feather AC RG "Special" with a Feather Super Professional blade. They very much compliment each other.:thumbup1:

I feel that if I need two of the same tool to do the job I probably shouldn't even be using the first one. I used to start with an electric and finish with a Mach 3, but that was to prevent overwhelming pain. I don't even have more than a Merkur HD now and I doubt I'll need something else for a long time.

I was actually going to ask the same question. I've done it myself, but I'm still a relative newbie. I used a DE as a teenager, but that was long ago. Recently started re-learning the art.

I've been using two razors for several months now. I have two 40s style Super Speeds that I use nearly every day. I use one for the first two passes and the other for the final pass.

My logic was that I would keep the blade at its sharpest for the final pass. I also find I can get more shaves out of each blade this way, since each is only doing about half the work. So when I change blades, I just load two razors instead of one.

I wouldn't go out and buy another one for this reason, but since I had them anyway, I just got hooked on it. By using two razors that are the same, I don't have to change anything in my technique when switching.

Hmmm. I think I'm the odd guy on this thread.

I start with a Fusion for my mostly bald head. About eight passes and the chrome dome shines.

I have a goatee, so the majority shave is usually a Gillette NEW with a Dorco or a Tech with a Crystal.

AND, because I have a moustache, I use a Sensor for the space between my 'stache and nose.

I know, I know. This guys is nuts you're saying. So, help me out. Suggestions, please.

I use two; slant for the major beard removal, but I find it impossible to do any buffing with it. I use an HD for that.

I must say never use two razor in one shaving session, never until today that is. This thread was fresh in my mind while I was whipping up some lather this morning so I thought why not? I started out mowing down a three day growth of beard with an undated Aristocrat, that worked very well, and then switched up to my first shave with a late model GEM. Nice smooth shave and not that much hassle since they both had blades loaded in them.

I doubt I'll do this everyday, but it was a nice change of pace this morning.

I never tried that. But I kinda feel that if a razor is good enough to start a shave, it should be good enough to finish the job. Interesting thought though.

For starters, you could unload the goatee and 'stashe.

I have been using two razors for every shave for months now.
I tend to make the first two or three passes with a '47 Super Speed, but I always do the (clean-up) last pass with a Fusion.

OK, so I am a heretic.

Max, I started using DE's when I started shaving my head. My Sensor was O.K., but it burned and scraped on my against-the-grain passes. I now use one DE for the whole job, shaving my head and face daily. I shave in the shower, mostly by touch. For me, shaving my head is a wonderful opportunity to double the DE shaving pleasure. I put my SS or Progress on autopilot, and, before you know it - BBS  . I suggest you try it. A scalp is a terrible thing to waste on a cartridge.

Since I am new to DE razors:

On weekdays, I will shave with my DE and finish up with my fusion on my neck, just so I don't blow up my neck I am still refining my technique.

On weekends I will do the entire job with the DE and work on my technique.

Getting better every time......

On occasion, I'll do a cleanup with a different dry razor.

Haven't used more than one in a single session yet.

I've been using a Gillette adjustable or superspeed over the last 37 years.

+1. Also it seems to me that by using multiple razors in a shave you are giving more importance to the razor than your technique. With proper Prep and technique any good razor should be more than adequate to get the job done.

Today, just to keep going with this concept, I did red tip/swede, then slim adjustable on 4/swede.

It was perfect. Definitely one of my top shaves. the aggressiveness of the red is perfect to mow down the big stuff, then get a little more gentle for the next passes.

I'd rather switch razors than try adjusting a latherey/slippery adjustable.:badger:

SWMBO has expressed her preference.

As a total side note here, this quote really puts the "She Who Must Be Obeyed(!)" into SWMBO. I love how you put it like that. But hey, whatever works for you and her... just be lucky you have thick enough facial hair to grow the attractive stache and goatee. You should see my driver's license after a month without a shave- yuck!

Sorry for the total lack of advice from me, but it's an interesting topic to consider.
