View Full Version : Musgo is a no go!

To All,

I just tried Musgo Real shave cream because I read a positive review about it on shaveblog (can I say that here?), and I wanted to try a brushless cream. As someone who normally shaves with a cream and brush, I found the experience pretty bad. I had to keep squeezing that tube four or five times to keep re-lathering for each pass, and I got no lather at all really, just a light coating of cream. The shave was mediocre- I didn't dare go against the grain like I normally do with Taylors or Proraso. Worst of all, I really didn't need my hands to smell like Musgo all day. Any thoughts?

I've just recently purchased my first tube, and it really is great stuff. It isn't quite up to the overall experience of a good high-end cream, but I find that it’s very lubricating and kind to my skin. That being said, I haven’t tried it brushless. Then again, I haven’t tried using a Wee Scot either… I did try the Lush shaving cream, but that’s a different horror story. - Justin

Guys,
Thank for your quick response. FYI, the Musgo box does say it is a "rich lathering and brushless shave cream", so I'm glad I'm not the only one who was unsatisfied with the results. I thank you for your comments and I look forward to trying it with a brush.

I'm betting you will have a completely different opinion of the stuff after using it with a brush. When I got the tube of Musgo in the mail I opened it and got some on my hands. The smell was terrible. However, when you lather it up and use it, the smell isn't bad at all. Let us know what you think about it. - Justin

I really like Musgo Real. But like most here, I like it with a brush. It's adequate, brushless, but it shines when you use it with a brush...

Hello All,

Thank you for your comments. I tried Musgo three times with a shaving brush- definitely a much better experience. Great lather and smell. The shaves were good, but not as good as with Proraso or Taylor for me. Anyway, it will definitely stay in the lineup as it was an overall good exeprience with the brush.

yeah, I agree, Musgo has to be used with a brush for optimum results. I think it's a damn good cream, but it gave me a bad rash, I guess my skin's too sensitive for it.

I've been meaning to try Musgo Real for some time now. However, comments about it "gunking" up a brush have turned me off, and I have no desire to use a brushless cream.

For those of you that use Musgo more regularly, how is it treating your brushes?

I was worried about that too, but so far I have noticed no ill-effects on either of the brushes I use it with. However, I'm still keeping a nervous eye on them! - Justin

One of the great misfortunes of forum reviews in general is that oftentimes there is more exhuberance than knowledge and fine products end up getting smeared for no good reason. While I don't think it is a matter of being malicious, merely ignorance and exhuberance, many gents put significant (undeserved) confidence in the pronouncements.
That's what I like about the review system at B&B. Most people just poke away and post there numbers (whatever they mean) and say little to nothing.
I'll give it a price of 8! No, no, it's a 9! No, it's a 7. What does that mean? Does price really mean value? Beats me. But it sure is fun!:tongue_sm

It was over a month ago that I finished the tube, and I didn't use it every day, but no, I don't remember it doing anything to my brush.

That's a great encapsulation of Hanlon's Razor: never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity (sometimes written as: never ascribe to malice, that which can be explained by incompetence).

no, John, I don't think so because the moisturizer I use contains lanolin, it's called Lubriderm, and I never had a reaction to it. I do agree that Musgo is good cream. I just can't seem to use it without a rash or irritation.

I bought my first tube of Musgo with my first tube of Proraso

Both are quality products, the reason that I used the Proraso up first was I think down to scent.

I prefer the Proraso eucalyptus to the Musgo almond/marzipan

P.S.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who can't handle the smell and gets skin irritation from Musgo. I kept trying to like it because it explodes with lather.

The fragrance is not for me, and I get pretty weird red itchy rash along my neck and flushed cheeks every time I use it. I'm adding the 3/4 tube to the next box I ship.. Hope it finds a good home.

I use musgo real quite frequently and don't have the issues with brush buildup. As someone stated before, it just explodes with lather, and I really like the smell. It has a grassy, fresh smell to it, like a freshly cut lawn.

I really hated the smell at first too but it has really grown on me and it is one of my favorite cream scents. I usually combine the cream with the a/s lotion (after dampening my face with some witch hazel). My secretary liked the scent of the a/s so much that she bought some for her husband for Fathers Day.

I have gone thru about 3 or 4 tubes of Musgo....in general...it is a good performing cream....and I mug lather....but it is not worth me getting a refill anytime soon....much rather buy more Proraso green or Cella.

I did enjoy Musgo when I had it. Always used a brush with it to good results. However Proraso and TOBS just keep pulling my money to them. I may try it again someday.

MR is a very thirsty cream ... I add two or three times as much water as I do to other soaps and creams. And I get great lather from it and a terrific shave.

I never have any trouble with it gunking up my brush ... if it does that, its a good sign you're not giving it enough water.

And BTW, I've found that MR works better as a brushless cream ... not that I have any problems working it with a brush. Its just easier and faster to put it on by hand, and there's no cleanup after I'm done.

I've got 2/3 of a tube left...I've always enjoyed it (great scent and lather), but realized that I haven't used it in a while...and I've been buying a ton of soaps lately. Thinking maybe I'll put myself on a strict diet of Musgo until it's gone (then I can start playing with the new ones). Sigh...decisions, decisions...

Received my Musgo Real cream yesterday, and I shaved with it last night. I found the smell to be pleasant. I like that it is not too strong. I can't place the smell though. I'm not very well educated in all the scents. Patchouli? Vetiver? No idea what those are. I did notice the smell opened up when lathered.

I don't think I spent enough time building the lather. It was VERY slick, but I didn't get it to be very protective. I'll have to experiment with it to see how best to work with it. So far though, it seems very moisturizing, which is my favorite quality in a soap or cream.

I like the scent & performance of Musgo Real. The scent smells like 'old world' barbershop. It lathers great with a brush and is slick and moisturizing. However, each time I lather up for a following pass, It slowly starts to irriate my face, making it start giving a slight burning feeling. By the time the 3rd pass is complete, the burn starts to get somewhat unfomfortable. After the shave, my face will feel slightly raw until I aftershave balm.

I figured it was the lanolin. However, I have no such problems with MWF, La toja or Godrej.

I use it almost every day, and I'm a new "retread" to DE shaving, so my impressions are limited - I'm trying a half dozen or so creams/soaps ATM. I prefer it to Omega/Proraso, and I use it both with and without a brush; in fact, I seasoned my new Vulfix with it (worked great). When used brushless it works well, in my opinion, but brushless means a dearth of airy bubbles, since you can't really aerate the stuff with your hands alone. It tends to need more brushless, too: I estimate I'll use twice as much product than using a brush (and this is consistent with other so-called brushless creams I'm using). I've used a lot of creams over the years in tubes versus cans, and I can't say I've ever found one that supplies copious tiny bubbles or any that explode into lather (unless it's a gel formulation, which I dislike). I've not noticed razor buildup, either. With a brush is better, admittedly, but I get just as close a shave either way. The scent is unique, not unpleasant, and innocuous after ten minutes. One thing I do like is that it's 'bens free, although that alone isn't a deal breaker for me. I'm puzzled by the OP's difficulty with this product, but that sometimes happens, as we aren't all alike.
