It seems I've been here for a while lurking in the shadows.
I've been shaving with a DE razor for about two and a half years now and have gleaned a lot of information from this site. I originally signed up here to do a review on the (then) new Clubman shave cream (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=23289), but decided a review from a newbie might not be the most trustworthy.
I don't use anything too fancy just a 50's SuperSpeed and Gillette Tech, a Wal-Mart Van-Der Hagen brush, Prorasso, and William's mixed with Surry's glycerin soap. I'm thinking I might try something a little more luxurious like the QED Violetta order coming up, although I prefer the scent of rose. Maybe some Trumpers. Does QED still make rose? So much for getting into DE shaving to save money.
Up until about February I had been using the SuperSpeed with Williams and the Van-Der Hagen brush and still got a shave superior to the Mach 3 (and Sensor Excell) I'd been using since I was 12. With the Mach 3 I was always told not to shave against the grain, I knew this couldn't be true. Even today I hear from Salon's and so called internet experts that you shouldn't shave ATG. I guess the cartridge and canned goo mentality is so engrained in our culture that rather than changing your shaving style to get a better shave you're supposed to change the quality of your shave to compromise with your shaving style.
