I have the address of a professional in my office who's in mid-town. I have not used the services but was told that he has 20 years of razor honing experience. I will post it tomorrow

I would greatly appreciate the name and address of the local guy. I will be getting a straight on Monday and would like to get it honed locally. Currently I am using a Dovo Shavette. I am VERY HAPPY with the results with the Shavette but am getting a straight from someone who only used it once or twice and gave up.

Good review, they offer razor sharpening for $20 and a four day turnaround. I spoke to them about 3 weeks ago but have not needed their services.

Thanks for the information. I will call them tomorrow. The address on the Times article is wrong. They tore that building down. I will check the W 25 Street address tomorrow.
Thanks again

I just moved to NYC and today I was out and about and picked up a straight razor. I was wondering if anyone knew a good place to get the razor honed in the city.
thanks in advance. I'm new here so if this isn't the right place to post this question I apologize.

The art of shaving is at Columbus Circle in the Warner Bros. Mall. 2nd or 3rd floor. There's another, supposedly bigger AOS downtown somewhere, but I've never been to that one. I don't know if they offer honing services, though.

I live in putnam county, which is north of the city by 90 miles or so. If you want, you can mail me the razor and I will hone it for you for free. Just pay postage both ways.
If you're interested, shoot me a pm.

Welcome to Badger and blade.
I'd suggest taking Nick (Disburden) up on that offer. He's a true gent, and sure to do a great job with it.
I have no firsthand experience with AOS, but I've read at least one thread that mentioned that they did a really crappy job honing another member's razor, IIRC. I'd think twice about sending a good blade there for honing.

If you need to have a razor honed in NYC, visit Cambridge Chemists, and ask Scott about it. He told me he knew somebody who honed razors.

Hi All,
Im new to straight shaving, and just purchased these two razors, mentioned in this thread here..http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/277676-Red-Imp-!?highlight=
The first one, Case 132 Wedge is arriving today, and I'm sure its not shave ready. I would like to possibly get it honed locally here in the NYC area if possible, so that I can avoid mailing back and forth, and get shaving asap..
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Basil

There is a shop in Soho - NY Shaving Co. - they have a website where I remember seeing that they offered straight razor honing.
There is a Pasteur's Pharmacy uptown... maybe 50 sumpthin St. - there's a guy working there that knows someone locally that will hone up straights. Apparently, whoever that is, does a good job.
I have not used either place - I do not have first hand knowledge here - I am only reporting what I've read elsewhere.
What I do know first hand - there is a shop in Brooklyn that will do a spectacular job. But it's not an easy place to get to.
This was one of the reasons that I bought hones in the first place.
I didn't want to spend 30 bucks and wait two weeks to get a razor honed.

Hey there, BP - I'm not answering because I'm a honemeister (I'm not), but if you want to come to Montreal at the end of the month I can at least get you started in the right direction. A couple of members here have shaved with my edges and were happy. We can learn together, on your old stone (my new one!) and your new one. And I can get you some lapping film time, too. :-)
Here's my travel kit - I've got it with me now and will have it, and I'll bring some others, in Montreal the last weekend of the month. My son's coming up from McGuire AFB as well, so he might be able to give you a ride. I know he's in the City often.
And, of course, if you find a real honemeister drag him/her along and I'll split the stipend with you!

I'm not certified by anyone - certifiable, perhaps, but not certified... :-) But, if it's consolation, I've got a bag of ANSI/ISO calibrated hairs from my redhead son.
The case is an electronics case, actually, and that's scrap foam from packing material at work. I've got your old coticule, a couple other stones, my camera and a microscope. Nothing broken in travel yet! And I carry the lapping film in a separate envelope.
BTW, the case doesn't mean I know anything about honing. :-)

I actually met with Bayamontate last Wednesday. He honed both my blades for me,(a red imp 1/4 hollow, and 133 red imp hollow) , also lent me a Wostenholm, very heavy grind, with a barber notch to try. What a gentleman, and very talented honemeister. I thought I had sharp blades before. This man brought them to a different level altogether..
I won't guess his age, but he's middle aged, and when I asked how long he's been at straight shaving, he said, he had never shaved any other way, from his first shave ever, to date....He's been generous though to even start teaching me, the Ins and outs of honing....
I don't know much yet, but I do know, that my blades now, literally wipe the whiskers of my face, regardless of which grind blade I use. I can't say that was the case before( a whole lot of tugging atg).......

Really, now NYC honing recommendations? Is this because most people send their razors out to be honed? Or hone them themselves?
Krodor
08-15-2012, 09:50 AM
I'm up near Poughkeepsie. Not sure you wanna drive the whole way. Otherwise, if you end up sending it, it shouldn't matter where you live. Either way, if you have a razor you need honed, I'll do it if you'd like. Send a pm...
But yeah, many (most?) hone their own after awhile.
Mustache
08-15-2012, 10:22 AM
Thanks Krodor,
Poughkeepsie is actually not too inconvenient for me since I head up to Accord almost every weekend. But sending is sounding like the way to go and I will definitely keep you in mind when the time comes. I'm set for the moment learning with a nice sharp razor from Whipped Dog (No cuts or abrasions on the first shave - thanks Larry!). But I also have a beautiful Red Injun that I plan to switch to once I know what I am doing and I think she will need some honing before active duty.
Scott, at Cambridge Chemists, knows somebody who hones in NYC. At least, he did when I was there a year ago.

I purchased a "site unseen" deal from Larry over at Whipped Dog a while ago and I'm due for a fresh edge. Besides having to send the blade thru the mail (Fedex actually lost my last blade I sent for repair), I am also concerned that this will be my only option for future purposes.
Here in NYC, I found New Shaving Company. They offer to hone for $30. Larry is offering $15 (plus shipping costs). Can anyone speak to NY Shaving's honing skill? I just hate having my blade away while I work with the DE.

30 bucks is hwy robbery. I'm near Poughkeepsie, send it to me and I'll take care of you for cost of shipping. That, or maybe someone closer to you might chime in and can take care of you cheaper than 30 bucks. Put it this way: 30 bucks can get you fully set up to hone your own on films.

I live in Greenwwich Village. I can't help find someone local, but I just got my SE wedge blades honed by a guy in MO. He did an outstanding job. He hones straights and antique Safety Razor wedges. Not sure of his straight rate, but the wedges are $15 per. But, I sent him 7, so he gave me a nice break. Shipping was $6. He honed and shipped within 24 hours of receiving them. He also submits a written checklist of tasks performed, including photos of the honing progression from start to finish. Super informative, and a master craftsman. A really wonderful guy.
His name is Mike Hinckley, and I think he runs razorandstone.com
PM me for his email address.
Best,
John
