Do you guys rinse or dip your razor to clean the lather and whiskers?
Does it make any difference? I used to rinse my Mach3 and now dip my DE mainly so my boiler can keep up with the hot water demand for rinses between passes (old oil boiler with no hot water storage tank). Water will start out about 140 and drop to about 110 if running any length of time.

I doubt that it makes much of a difference; perhaps there's a little more soap scum buildup on razors whose owners dip them.
I personally "dip," which is to say that I submerge the head of my razor in the sink full of hot/warm water and swish it around a little.

I used to dip, no I rinse as it saves a little water.

Do you turn on and off the water with each rinse?

I fill the basin with hot water at the beginning of the shave, use that water to build lather, to dip my razor, and for rinsing my face, then open the drain, turn on the cold, splash of my face, and rinse all my tools. It works pretty well and isn't nearly as wasteful as running the tap throughout the shave.

I dip/swish the razor while shaving and then rinse it off with cold water just before rinsing my face. It gives me a chance to look for spots that might need a touch up.

Likewise, seems to me the natural way.

I dip and swish.
when finished I rinse the razor with hot water to wash off most of the residue, the brush and basin with warm water and the face with cool water.

That is exactly my procedure minus the rinse of my ex-hot towel under the warm water as well.

If I'm using a brushless cream such as Avalon, or Alba then a dip generally won't be enough to completely clean the razor but it will often be good enough if I swish for a few seconds. A dip is enough with creams like Proraso I find. I also find that a dip is good enough with my slant, but not as good with a superspeed.

This is what I do as well when shaving my face. When I do the final clean up passes on my head I'll use my fusion. When using the multi-blade fusion razor, I will rinse with the water on full to help clean out the small spaces between blades.

I used to dip when I used a cartridge razor...I would actually tap it on the bottom of the warm water filled sink as well (which I will not do with my DE).
Now using any of my DEs, I rinse, turning on and off the water each time...that way I use less water, and the water stays hotter than if I fill the sink.
ps - I think there is a better chance that the actual sink would break as opposed to the razor if I tapped one of my Merkurs on the sink - either way, it doesn't sound like something I would want to come close to trying.

Another alternative....
Get a small bowl filled with hot water and dip/swish/rinse your razor head in that.
You'll save water
It will stay hot longer since the heat isn't transfering to the cold sink basin.
When you pour it out, you won't have to wash all the hairs out like you do when you rinse in a full sink.
On the other hand, using this method leaves lots o' bowls laying around the sink (lather bowl, soap bowl, rinse bowl)

That's not a bad idea. I actually have two bowls next to my sink as it is right now. One is a bowl that was once my lather bowl, but when I got my Shavemac, it was too small to lather in. I found a bowl on Ebay that is slightly larger, (diameter-wise) and much deeper. For awhile I was lathering in the larger bowl, then rinsing it out, putting hot water in it and setting the smaller bowl into it as a sort of scuttle. Worked well but I just got tired of hassling with it so I sit my larger bowl in the sink with hot water surrounding it. Looks like I now have a use for the old bowl again.

+1
I face-lather, so I use a cereal bowl to soak my brush in, then after the soap is applied I fill the bowl with hot water, leave it in the sink, and just dip and swish. Ceramic bowls work better for this than stainless steel, they get all gunked up with soap residue and don't look that great after the first shave.

I rinse. I have no idea whether it makes any difference.

I've no idea where I picked up the habit, but I have a plastic beaker, which I fill with hot water at the start of my shave. I swish my razor around in that between passes. Like the "second bowl" method posted above, I like the way it keeps all the shaved stubble out of the sink.

I do the same, but I do a warm water rinse for my face and tools before a cold water rinse of my face.
