Can anyone describe what "Vetiver" smells like? I've seen a lot of guys on the SOTD using this cream and am just curious about how you regular users would classify it's scent & lubricity? I don't see any reviews on the review forum done on this cream. How do Salter creams perform compared to Taylors?

any info would be appreciated...

Salter's Vetiver is no longer in production. I personally prefer Salter creams over the majority of Taylor's - they both give good lubrication (perhaps Taylor's is a little better here) but Salter's gives me a better cushion I find.

Salter's vetiver is definitely an acquired taste. High quality lather but the scent is one of the very few scents that I found too objectionable to continue using. Very smokey and earthy. I'll bet that it smells like no other vetiver that you ever have used. :9898:

Ravi,
Just as a heads up - it is now being produced yet again, and it is available to purchase.

Shaved with it today. Great stuff. Be advised, though - this is a love it or hate it thing. Justin, knowing a bit about your tastes, I have a feeling it won't be your cup of tea.

This is one of my favorite creams. I find Salter to perform with the best of them, even better. The vetiver is one of my favorite scents. It is a deeply masculine scent that is very heavy. One use of this and your brush will smell like it for a few shaves afterward regardless of what you use. I'm glad to hear they are producing it again, I'll have to stock up before the next whim to discontinue it again.

As for scent, it reminds me of the oh so very pungent scent that you find in a chinese herbalist's shop. If you've ever had the opportunity to enter one of these places, and have survived the assualt upon your olfactory organs, you have an idea of what Salter's Vetiver smells like.

I actually love the scent, and find it clinging to my hands and face for quite awhile.

Whaaa? That's great! It was the only scent I was not able to get. Going to give Charles a call tomorrow. Thanks!

Smokey? Earthy? Hmm...well, it does sound like a love/hate thing...

Scotto- Yeah, I think you're right on this one. From what I've picked up from the descriptions, sounds like a mix of potting soil and smouldering leaves. :blushing: I'll probably give it a pass and just go after the St. James Cream from Taylor.

Ron,

Try reading what? I clicked that and its just a pic? Did I miss somesing?

Justin,
I believe Ron is referring to an "acquisition" thread - this one (http://www.badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=28669#post28669) in particular. If you scroll down you'll see Ron post it as an acquisition, which was the "single" post he linked you to, however if you read the threads below it, and on following pages, there is a wealth of information on the scent posted by several members.

That's it Joel. After my smokey comment, post 15 of the thread, we got a "WEALTH" of opinion. How does get a link to a specific post and still get the thread open as opposed to the pointer in the upper right?

Hope that did not cause too much confusion.

It smells woody and very masculine the lather brilliant and they still have it in production and we have some in stock i would say it is better than t&h as taylors does not make this scent
these are their current fragrances
lime
citrus
almond
indian sandalwood
wild rose
french vetiver
fresh mint

To me, it smells like a cold campfire ash pit.

I found it very disagreeable and think that dead skunk smells a little bit better.

It might well be an acquired taste, but I don't plan on attempting it.

To each his own, your milage may vary, yada, yada, yada....

Hee! Good thing you just had a sample. Lesson learned...

Personally, I love the stuff.

Reviving a very old thread here. I tried Salter's vetiver yesterday, and it is an excellent shaving cream when not considering the scent. Scent might be too kind of a word. Smell might be more appropriate. The smell of this vetiver stuck to me for an entire day, and family did not want to come near me. Even the dog was put off by the pungent smell of vetiver.

You know what you should try, then. You should try the QED Vetiver shave stick.

Mwahahaha.

 Vetiver is a love it or hate it kind of thing. If Salters isn't to your liking, I would stay away from QED's offering. It is the most in your face Vetiver around.

I have heard that and thanks. I think Moses was just poking a little fun to try to get me to try the QED. I am going to give the Salters another couple of tries. I am an outdoorsman, and vetiver just seems like something I should like -- smokey, pungent, and earthy.

Indeed. Honestly, you probably want to stay away from the QED if you don't like the Salter. Although, they are different beasts. The QED is sharper and even more in your face. But with the grassy, muddy, marshy aspects. The Salter is a LOT smokier.

I know what you mean about thinking it is a natural for you. But it really is a love it/hate it thing. And I don't think being an outdoorsman guarantees being on the "love it" side.

Well, I do sometimes enjoy the smell of "wet dog", but usually only in the duck blind or the upland field. So, vetiver, which is stronger smelling than wet dog, may just be a very occasional cream for me.

Hi;

Tried vetiver once; couldn't decide whether it smelled like old sweat socks or burning chicken feathers. Took a week soaking the brush in borax to eliminate the smell.

I like the Honeybee Vetiver soap, and so far my favorite Floris scent is the Vetiver. Is the QED Vetiver likely to appeal to me, or is it a whole different beast? I know that two products described as having the same scent can be vastly different, as some tend to be single note fragrances, while others tend to be someones interpretation of a scent. This has been the case as I have explored various lime creams and soaps to find the one I like the best (so far the winner is Honeybee lime, but I have only tried that and Trumper's so far).

The Floris Vetiver scent is quite sweet. The QED stick is just pure vetiver EO - dry, earthy, grassy. It smells like you just pulled a bunch of weeds out of your garden. Personally I love the stuff, but it is not for the faint of heart. Only one way to find out, though....

Send it to me. I love vetyver. The vetyver has a very unique smell. Your body chemistry either works with it or it doesn't. For me it is fabulous and the Salter is something that I have been recommended. I can trade you some soap or something else for it. Let me know. Most Vetyvers are EO blends, blended with something else to cut down on the in your faceness. Charles at QED is not. It is Pure in your face Vetyver which I like immensely. In fact I used it today. I am currently working on a Lavender / Vetyver Blend shaving soap, that I make. The lavender cuts the grassy scent and pairs well in the facial healing aspect. When I am happy with the blend, I will be making some new soap. :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

Yes, a whole different beast. Go to Whole Foods, to their EO department. Smell the Vetyver Essential Oil with nothing else. That is Charles Scent. If you like the smell of fresh cut grass, freshly turned earth or freshly cut hay - you will love pure straight Vetyver. If not - you wont. Its pretty simple.

the scent of salter vetiver is definately nothing like the other scents that i have. i'll definately use all of the cream because i like it's shaving properties, the scent hasn't grown on me, but i don't dislike it either, so i'll keep using it.

i don't think i'd reorder it though.

Wow. You are more forgiving than I. If I don't like the scent of something, I won't use it. There are too many creams with scents I love to ever use one I don't. If I don't love it, it immediately is relegated to the "for the BST forum" pile. (Which reminds me that I really need to get on addressing that pile....)

Well, now that I have a digital camera, there is at least a slightly increased probability of some of this stuff actually showing up. (Although I guess I only really needed the camera for the razors.)
