After only about a week surfing these boards and getting sorted with all the tools required for a good DE shave, I've had the chance to try a few creams I've picked up along the way.

I know I've had lots of great advice telling me not to go buying loads of creams and soaps and to keep it simple but I just can't. Especially since I've come over from Basenotes, and being a fragrance freak I find the price of shaving creams and soaps to be very reasonable compared with the high-end scents.

Anyway, to the point. I've tried GFT Sandalwood, Limes and Violet creams with some success, I've tried T&H Grafton with much success (my favourite so far, anthough I'll revisit the Trumpers soon as I only used them in the first few days of DE shaving so I need to give them another try).

I also have C&E Nomad and Sienna. I've not tried the Sienna yet, but I used Nomad the other day and was amazed at how drying this cream appeared to be. My skin was more irritated than usual and felt sandpaper dry when applying some skin food afterwards. In fact, I needed much more just to cover the same area. Does anyone else feel the same about Nomad calming shaving cream? I was very surprised since it appears to be aimed at those with sensitive skin.

PS - the irritation wasn't that bad and had cleared up by the next evening, and using the Grafton has opened my eyes to the quality of T&H! I must say I never thought shaving could be this much fun ....Need........more........er........shaving related creams and soaps....

I haven't tried soaps yet. May give it a whirl tonight - Kents and EJ are all I have........so far.....

I've never had the opportunity to try the EJ soaps but the Kent is amazing. Very nice.

I've enjoyed the Nomad and it is one of my favorites of the C&E line. If you're finding that it is somewhat 'drying' use a little more cream in the mix. The C&E creams afford a very nice shave.

Since you're into trying these different creams, another I'd recommend are the creams from Cyril Salter. They are very lush and a joy to shave with. :001_wub:

Thanks for the advice John, I'll try it with a little more cream.

The last time I used C&E Nomad I almost found it to be too moisturizing. And I did not have the irritation issues that you had, I found the cream to be very protecting.

I have never been disappointed with any Taylor's creams. They are a great value for what they offer, as well. The Avocado is particularly moisturizing, although the scent is okay. Rose, Avocado, St. James and Mr. Taylor are all highly recommended by me.

yes, there is a quick addiction when it comes to soaps and creams for me as well. i wouldn't worry too much about varying the creams and soaps but i'd stay locked into one razor and blade fairly early on so you can start to get the hang of it. feel free to experiment around with the creams and soaps i'd say.

i'd suggest starting with creams because they're easier to lather, and then move to some soaps because they help you shave really close really quickly with little fuss, but it's harder to get the right mixture unless you're experienced with the ratios.

Yes, I'm sticking with the same razor (Merkur HD) and blades (Derby Extra) until I'm more confident, but I really enjoy trying a different cream every day. My shaves have been great (not counting the one with Nomad, but I fear I used too little cream on that day) since switching from an M3 and canned cream. I can shave every day for the first time in my life, which is a joy!

I tried a soap (Kent) for the first time and had a closer shave. Don't know whether it's because I used a soap or because I'm getting better at shaving...time will tell.
