If the date is set, I'll see about getting time off & a hotel. I'd love to have another excuse to go to NYC. I haven't been down that way in almost 4 years. I've been stuck up here in this tiny village by lake Ontario, lol.
Oh, and while I've never had haggis, it looks delicious & I've eaten most ( all? ) the parts they use in it, just from beef cows instead of sheep.
AjaxLepinski
07-31-2012, 08:17 PM
I'll show up to the afterparty if it includes C.O. Bigalows and Otto's Shrunken Head - I don't think I can "stomach" the haggis.

For those going to NYC and needing a hotel, I recommend the Affinia Shelburne at 37th and Lex. Walking distance to Pasteur's. Great neighborhood away from the crowds in Times Square, but walking distance to nearly everything in Midtown and only 4 short blocks from Grand Central. They've even got quite large 2 bed/2 bath suites if you're bringing family or want to double up with other members. I've been staying there for nearly 6 years for about 60 or 70 days a year. Not cheap, but generally good value for the money.
NYC has lots of hotels and you can usually find something anytime, but the prices fluctuate wildly. I've payed anywhere from 150 to500/night for the exact same room depending on demand. If you're going, then make a reservation right away and lock in a good price. It's not an airline so you can cancel without penalty or rebook later if you see a cheaper rate.
Finally, while Foie Gras is illegal in California but fine in NYC, Mayor Bloomberg outlawed Haggis. Turns out that even the Scottish Americans were relieved as they were pretending to like it.

It appears that it was originally banned during the Mad Cow outbreak. After *that* bad was lifted, the US instituted a ban on using animal lungs in food. As sheep lungs are an ingredient in traditional haggis, you can't make that legally. You can still make an approximation of it, but you can't include sheep lungs. It is still something you can call haggis, but it isn't a true traditional one.
If that's what you were referring to, you can thank the FDA, not Mayor Bloomberg.
Oh, and I hate myself for having to look that up... not because I didn't know it, but because not looking it up would have bugged me all day, lol.

After seeing this thread last night, I stopped by Pasteur's on Lex & E 63rd, for the first time, earlier this afternoon. From the outside, it looked tiny compared to a Duane Reade or CVS and I wasn't expecting too much. Walking in, my expectations began to increase after noticing that the ceiling high shelves were crammed with a plethora of personal care supplies. Turning to the right, my jaw unexpectedly dropped when I saw a highly impressive assortment of brushes; Simpson, Vei-Long, Omega and others. Then, my eyes turned lower, towards the shelf below the brushes, and my now drool covered jaw dropped even further after spying the huge selection of DE's: Merkur, IKON, Goodfella and EJ. Like a kid on Christmas morning, I fumbled with a Progress, Futur and a Vison 2000. I checked out a Merkur 37C. Then, the realization struck me: there must be a few aftershaves here that I may want to try. Turning to the left was the Holy Grail, the mother load, a complete array of every famous and semi-famous brand of aftershave, shaving soap and shaving cream that has ever been mentioned in the archives and posts of B&B. AND, they had a nice variety of DE Blades at the register ready for the final impulse purchase. Grabbing a 5 pack of Persona Reds and with beads of sweat forming on my forehead, I got out of there on the cheap after spending only $40. This is a dangerous store - Heaven and Hell both in one place!

Just to warn you, I'm not the greatest at navigation in cities. I think it comes from living in a village of 3,000 people or so my whole life. That and the biggest city near me is home to a huge 100,000 people.
Also, is there a dress code for the restaurant you plan on meeting at? I'm a khakis & Hawaiian shirt kind of guy, but can dress up if I should.

Oooh I'm looooong overdue for a trip into the City - only 2 hours +/- and would be glad to offer a ride for anyone from Northeast PA or even Lehigh Valley area etc
...and if anyone needs help with hotel rooms I can see if I can pull a few strings. I generally prefer to stay Lower East Side myself (must be all that tattoo ink in my blood) but I have several hotels in midtown that may work out a deal for us too.
I will put out a few calls in the next few days and see what kind of rates I can come up with...
Even if you have booked your hotels, if I can come up with a better deal I doubt any property is not within their standard cancellation period - unless you prepaid for a very low rate already.

I am not much of a pen guy, do they have mechanical pencils? I have a Pentel Sharp Kerry that I like very much, but he needs a friend I think.
Although, I do lurk a lot in the Nib and find fountain pens interesting. I could probably be easily talked into an innexpensive starter fountain pen. I am sure you gents can help point me in the right direction when we get there.
And I am always looking for a nice, everyday notepad and/or stationery.

The Preppy I have has already been converted to an eyedropper pen, so you can take a look at that as well.

I only had that link because I went to their site as soon as going there was mentioned. I need to see what I'm up against before I go. Luckily most all of their pens are far enough out of my price range that I don't have to worry about it. Ink & paper on the other hand...

Although, I do lurk a lot in the Nib and find fountain pens interesting. I could probably be easily talked into an innexpensive starter fountain pen. I am sure you gents can help point me in the right direction when we get there.
And I am always looking for a nice, everyday notepad and/or stationery.
I'm in for a starter pen too. And maybe another bottle of ink. These guys are going to be bad news for my wallet :P

If anyone is taking or thinking of taking NJ Transit - http://www.njtransit.com/ - you do have to buy the tickets before boarding or they will charge you an additional $5 on the train.
Also, if you're not a frequent commuter on NJ Transit, and you're train line is not a MidTown Direct, you may want to continue to Hoboken and take PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson subway) to 33rd Street & 6th Avenue (What the tourists refer to as "Avenue Of The Americas") - which will put you closer to Pasteur's than Pennsylvania Station. Also, you might want to check out the parking situation at the train station lots. Some are free on weekends, others you have to pay.
And if you're taking PATH, here's a link http://www.panynj.gov/path/

I don't really have anything fun shaving or writing utensil items to bring or show off. I plan on bringing a chain maille item or two, but that's about it... Getting caffeinated with a Lake Toba Sumatra. Found that Staedtler Mars 700 technical pen set under a box of chocolate covered cherries when I finally finished them, so those are coming too.

Great pictures, Inky. Thanks!
There were a few more pictures originally, but I asked Mendel to remove some of them because it's been the tradition in NY to not post pictures of people without explicit permission. Apologies to Mendel and everyone else for peeing in the Cheerios. We usually bring this up at the meets, but with all the fun, the haggis, and what was that delicious sweet brew called?

Hi folks,
sorry that I had to leave a littel early, I hope you continued to have a great time a couple of more beers and laughs.
It was great so see some familar faces again and some new folks joining the Pasteur shaving AD crowd :biggrin1:.
As for the initial title of this thread ... at night I went to the Blue Note to see Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour and Diane Schuur celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dave's GRP lable.
The encore from Diane was " A New York State of Mind " she on piano and vocals, of course. Life is good !

Now that I'm finally home, semi-rested and ready to digest the weekend. I had a really great time & am glad to have met you all in person. I'll be keeping an eye out for the next NYC get-together and will get the time off as soon as the date is posted.
Mendel - I will assume responsibility of your FPAD
BrianW - I'm trying to use up the last of my one converter so I can try out those vintage inks ( but I will likely keep most of the ink for when I cave & buy a vintage pen ).
Jim - I have 2 auction piece ideas in my head & will send you a picture of the main one when the prototype is done. Neither piece will be done for this year, but they will be done ( hopefully ) in time for a spring get-together, if there is one.

Si Burning,
I believe the brew you are referring to is Belhaven's Wee Heavy.
SiBurning
10-16-2012, 04:58 PM
Yes! And it was just a wee bit heavy. & Sweet!
I stopped by Pasteur's yesterday afternoon, and asked them if you guys caused too much trouble. They said it was an impressive site, and thanked you for your business.

Did they mention they somehow ran out of Booster's Mosswood?

Well, the MWF ceramic container was busted when I opened it... not sure if it was busted when I got it or if it happened in transport :( Luckily the soap is still good. used that this morning & it was great, even though I did a terrible job at making the lather. It was pretty wet & I was being impatient... no razor burn, tugging or cuts, so it wasn't too bad! It also left my face feeling great!
I still can't get over how much fun that was! I've actually been searching the 'bay for fountain pens... not good.

I'm wishing I bought more :-/ There was stuff there I didn't walk out with that I probably should have. Oh well, I'll just have to wait until the next meet-up!
