What is the Cella fragrance? It is clearly not just almond. To me, it smells like almond 50%, cherries 30%, a mixed floral component 20%. It's deceptively complex.

What do Cella users think?

It's the smell of ......... victory!

No seriously I smell Almond and so does my wife, my daughter smells cherries. I guess it may very well be dependent upon the person who is smelling it.

Ah, Cella :001_wub:

I get marzipan from P.160 (which is why I love it so much), not so much from Cella.

Smells mostly like maraschino cherries to me....not my cup of tea. I never even test lathered the sample I got from Garry. I gave it away with some stuff I sold on the BST

Missing out.

I am sure it is a great soap, but I have plenty of other great soaps (MdC, Tabac, MWF, Mystic Water, etc) that all smell good to me. So forcing myself to shave with something I don't like the smell of would be kinda silly. I did the same thing with a stick of Akro too

What he said!! I cannot stand this artificial "bitter almond" scent, although great soaps, the reason I can not use them.

I never noticed the "cherry type" scent to the Cella. I remember when a free sample was thrown in with an order, it led to the purchase of a red tub. I might have to shave with Cella today.:biggrin1:

The reason people think it smells like cherries is because maraschino cherries are flavored with bitter almond oil.

It's almond (benzaldehyde). There is no cherry smell in Cella. When's the last time you smelled actual fresh cherries that smelled like that?

Benzaldehyde

this...its entirely scented with benzaldehyde. which is what fake maraschino cherries are flavored with and is the main scent of almonds (therefore marzipan) and apricot pits...which are what amaretto is made of

It's interesting, and well recognized, that the chemical senses (taste and smell) vary significantly between individuals. To me, the cherry smell in Cella is very evident, and is balanced by the almond smell. I looked up benzaldehyde on a fragrance molecule reference site and it is listed as having both almond and cherry notes, so it may very well be that this is what is used in Cella. When I refer to cherry, it is the typical artificial cherry candy flavor - which usually has no almond character. It may be that those who say that there is no cherry in Cella simply cannot perceive it from the particular molecules used, and vice versa for the almond aspect. The numerous responses to this thread illustrate the variety of reactions to whatever fragrance ingredients are used in Cella. Has anyone smelled straight benzaldehyde?

Has anyone smelled straight benzaldehyde?

I have. I actually made it in organic chemistry lab when I was in undergrad.

It smells like almonds

There is some variation in people's sense of smell, but as someone earlier mentioned, its used to flavor maraschino cherries, so the brain automatically associates the scent with cherries, even if natural cherries don't smell like it. It's something hardwired into a brains as an evolutionary mechanism, just as when you've eaten something when you're sick, the smell, taste, or even thought of it can make you nauseous.

To me, the smells of cherries (artificial cherry candy) and almonds are completely different. In Cella they occur together, whereas in other products they are completely separate; cherry candy has no almond flavor, and marzipan does not smell like cherry.

The almonds that we eat here in America are not the same as in Italy. In Italy it is the "bitter almond" flavor/aroma that is prevalent in quite a bit of their foods and even household scented items. In America the almonds we have mostly just smell nutty and lightly sweet. Open up your liquor cabinet and pour a shot of quality Amaretto (Italian almond liqueur) and open up a jar of good Maraschino cherries. Smell the two and I'd be willing it's nearly identical - this is Italian bitter almond. Now smell the Amaretto vs fresh roasted domestic (American) almonds. Not very similar are they? Now go to the grocer and pick up some fresh cherries and some cheap cherry flavored candy. Smell the two of them. The candy will smell much closer to the bitter almond scent (though not identical) than it does to real fresh cherries. I'm not trying to say that one cannot pick out just one or both scents in Cella, just trying to give a mental jumping-off point for these aromas and why it's easy for our brains to link the two of them.

Amaretto or cherries you say?

http://www.answers.com/topic/benzaldehyde

Wiley Dictionary of Flavors: (http://www.answers.com/library/Flavors+Dictionary-cid-7716) Benzaldehyde

One of the more commonly used flavor ingredients. Its use includes the bitter almond note of Amaretto, cherry flavor in cough drops, as a main constituent in almond and cherry flavors in general, and useful in contributing a nutty character obviously useful in nut flavors, and the fruity sharpness found in apricot, peach, and many other flavors. It is almost impossible to list all of the uses of benzaldehyde because they include everything from vanillas and chocolates to passion fruit and kiwi.

its not vaiability in peoples' senses its that 5 or 6 different products are scented with benzaldehyde and whichever people come into contact with first is what the smell is to them. so since most americans don't eat almond things but eat tons of fake cherry candy as kids, they will say it has a cherry scent...

Yes, I have a whole bottle of benzaldehyde, i use it in the lab as an assay, C. elegans are attracted to it so if they have certain mutations they wont be attracted... it smells just like cella :001_tt2:

yes, except that no one eats bitter almonds, since they are too bitter, all comercially grown almonds are "sweet"...and amaretto is usually flavored from apricot pits, though that's pretty much the same as an almond anyway.

Cella lists "parfum" but if you look at some labels of P.160 it actually says "benzaldehyde"

You guys are WAY overthinking it.

This is B&B. It's what we do here.

B&B is essentially a bunch of guys who like to analyze issues (think engineers, attorneys, doctors, systems/financial analysts) who take a very simple topic - shaving - and discuss it with amazing granularity.

I do love this place....

BTW: It smells like amaretto to me. Cella rocks!

Concur on the amaretto. Don't let the initial scent from the tub scare you, it calms down drastically once you lather it up and transforms.

json
07-03-2012, 01:08 PM
almond cherry pie is what the soap smells like... though have yet to shave with it yet so that may change (as some scents change once you lather them)!
note: moving the cella sample to NEXT on my samples to finish list.

Definitely see the Amaretto connection. BTW, I'm thinking I might be liking RazoRock's Classic smell even better than Cella. I should to do alternate day testing to figure out which one I keep in rotation...

Another vote for almond/amaretto here. I don't get any cherry smell from Cella (like I do from RazoRock Classic and, to a lesser degree, from P.160). I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the raw fat smell in Cella. Fatty scent notwithstanding, Cella is still in my top 5 soaps and has been since the first time I shaved with it. Now, regarding the matter of Cella brick vs. red tub... 255323
