Is it just me, or does it seem like triple-milled soaps need a break in period?

I noticed that when I bought Tabac, the first few shaves from the puck when it was brand spanking new were ok but not great. Now however, lather jumps from the puck to the brush and appears to be an entirely different soap.(mind you, I am not complaining!)

The same thing happened tonight when I shaved with Mitchell's Wool Fat soap. The initial shaves and lather did not measure up to anecdotal evidence perused upon this site. However, tonight the scales dropped away and the heavens opened and lather exploded from the puck like it was going out of style. 2 triple milled soaps, same initial results, then Bam!

I actually dropped my brush 3x while lathering my face. It was if I had a superlather combo going! :em2200:

Mind you, I am @ work and this could be just the ramblings of a face-rubbing, cant wait for tomorrows shave idiot also. however, if this has happened to you....

Who know. Although I will say that when I first tried Tabac, twice, I thought it was ok at best and ignored if for the next six months. Then I broke it out again, and.... That was all she wrote....

Marty, was it always the same brush being used?

Mo, "all she wrote" for the soap or does it mean the same results as Marty?

Are you sure that it's not a case of your lather skills / techniques getting better ? Practise makes perfect !!

I can imagine there might be some moisture making its way into the soap after the first few shaves which might affect things.

My dad commented on this when I bought him a bowl of Trumpers Almond. It probably is due to the soap absorbing some moisture, so it lathers up quicker than when it is new and quite dry.

I use either my Omega boar or my Savile Row Tortoise to lather my soaps with. If the boar does not do well, I then use the SR on the next go round.

I believe I will have to purchase another(RESISTANCE IS FUTILE) triple-milled soap just to see what's going on.

I actually used Tabac for the first time today and loved it. If it gets better, that is okay by me, but I loved it and will definitely be making it a part of my rotation (my first hard soap btw).

I put some hot water on the puck for a minute or two and just let it sit there before lathering. Maybe that is why it lathered so nicely. Maybe your puck was just not hydrated enough before lathering. I put hot water on it for a minute or two before lathering only because I saw it somewhere on this forum and it made sense to me so I remembered it. Maybe worth a try.

Well, yes an no, in my case.

My lathering skills are pretty well in place, and were at the time. That said, lathering every soap is slightly different, so....

I find this to be somewhat the case, I can't really describe why, but it seems so.

However, after many uses, I find the top gets "worn out," the soaking that I do seems to melt some of the finer ingredients towards the bottom. So I flip it, and get some unbelievably soft and luxurious lather.

I've only a few hard soaps, and two of the three had been re-milled into another container so there was no break-in period. The Cade soap and the Provence Sante had already been cut up, I found both to perform very well right out of the gate. The Pre de Provence won me over at first sniff, who cared about the lather?
