View Full Version : I dropped my bowl in to the sink...

...and it smashed into a million pieces. Thankfully it didn't damage the sink.
I was drying it with a Chamois leather and it slipped out of my hand. It was a lovely glazed earthenware bowl by M&S that was left in my works lost property for over a year. So I am on the look out for a replacement. I doubt I'll get a posh one. I'm looking for something original, something that stands out in my display.

I feel your pain.
Been there, done that (in a slightly different way) .... felt like someone punched me in the gut.

Got a new one from Sainsburys today, £2 for a bright red cereal bowl.

This is why I was terrified to use my scuttle and breakable bowls. I went stainless and plastic a while ago. That's a heartbreaking pic above.

This is why I use a double-walled plastic salsa bowl..it's cheap..insulated..and damn near unbreakable.

I picked one of those up at Wally Wold and love it. It's a good lather bowl.

Hit it with some low-grit sandpaper and/or carve some light crosshatch lines into it and it gets even better.
I use an enameled tin chili bowl that I place over a cheap ceramic soup bowl filled with hot water. It sort of takes the place of a scuttle and conducts heat nicely.

The day I broke my lathering bowl was one of the best in my shaving career... Forced me to face lather... I've never looked back.

Another reason not to use a bowl in the 1st place, YMMV.

It's just a $4 bowl that holds a puck of Cade, but I was bummed when it slipped to the bottom of the sink and chipped yesterday.

Better than what I did, dropped a glass decanter of aftershave and broke a few hundred dollar custom sink.

I use a stainless steel bowl that sits perfectly in the mouth of a cup FULL of hot water. Keeps my lather toasty warm....and cant break...

Speedwell,
It happens. I've broken many coffee cups and soup bowls--some of which I really liked. Dangerous ritual this wet shaving is. It seems we are very careful only when we put blade to face. Anyway, in your part of the world there is a pottery master Steve Woodhead Ceramics. Scuttles, bowls, mugs. Check out Ebay for his offerings as well. Really high quality products that are reasonably priced in my opinion. Brilliant stuff. Also, shipping will be much less for you than it was for me in NYC. Good luck to you.
