I have recently moved. I only moved about 5 (according to Google maps 4.5) miles away but it is across the Hudson River to Beacon NY. I had quite hard city water where I was, but Beacon is much softer. We are temporally renting a house. Neither house has a water softener, but I have noticed a big change in water hardness. I did notice he has some sort of magnetic "anti scale" device on the main water pipe coming in. I get much more lather with every soap I have tried, with especially big changes in MWF and Tabac. Along with the improved lather I have noticed improved performance as well. I am very surprised that a move of such short distance would make such a big difference. Seems strange that a move of just 5 miles and using city water would make a big difference.

I live up the road a piece in LaGrange and have softener for my well water.....it makes a noticable difference. Not just with shaving but cooking, showering etc.

Well New York City has very soft water, but much of the rest of the state is on wells, and treated water so they tend to have hard to very hard water. This is the first time I have had soft water in New York. Now I am wondering if itis the town water, or that stupid Magnetic anti scaling device. It doe look like at one time there was a water softener, as there are some T's in the line that look like they may have gone to a softener, or it could have been a water heater or something. It is an old house and there have been many reconfigurations in it's lifetime. I don't believe that the magnetic conditioners do anything, but who knows. I am enjoying it now for sure. I had a house in Cornwall, NY (same area) and had a heating coil in the boiler and it would clog in 4 months. I had to set up a pump to pump Muriatic acid through it every 2 months.
I also think the government has nothing to do with it, as the water is basically untreated from a reservoir system from throughout the state. The quality comes mainly from the fact that it is minimally treated, so it does not taste like pool water. Also it does make very good pizza dough! I know Beacon has a water reservoir up on Mount Beacon, perhaps that is why it is soft. I must admit I have not drank much of it yet so I cannot really comment on taste.

I'm surprised on how much softness can have a change too. It's amazing.

Consistent soft water and quickness is what gave canned goo it's edge back in the day. Soft water makes a huge difference in a shave, even today with modern formulations. Distilled water (very soft) plus a scuttle mitigates all this for the modern traditional lathering shaver IMHO.
Hope that helps.
