View Full Version : Frags you own that LAST

verdict

Not trying to start a flame war or start name pointing, but I think fragrances that don't last aren't worth the money. I'm talking about big name fragrances that cost $50 for 50ml. I own one of these fragrances and even with liberal application, the scent will last for about half an hour...after that you're going to have to dig your nose in my shirt to smell it.

I want to ask you, what fragrances do you own that last?

I went into a Tom Ford boutique and tried the White Suede on, gave it a few good sprays around the neck, and it lasted even after I washed that shirt. Very impressive, and the smell was great. However it was $200 for a bottle, I'm not that into Frags enough yet to spend that kind of money.

Anyone have a frag that really lasts?

Here are a few that last and don't cost $200:

Annick Goutal Sables - Burnt sugar and maple syprup
Caron Pour un Homme - great lavender/vanilla scent
Guerlain Vetiver - a benchmark vetiver

and a few classics:

Aramis
Azzaro Pour Homme
Polo Green

Knize Ten

Expensive, yes. You get what you pay for. Kind of.

I agreee with Polo Green. Caron PuH...didn't last, but wasn't that great to me. Aramis...great! Not as potent as others but does hang around a little. Azzarro PH...not on me. another that lasts on me is vintage (MEM Company) English Leather.

I'm wanting to try this Annick Goutal Sables now.

Some frags like Blue Seduction or any of the Amen Flankers will last several days on your clothing. Even frags like Hermes Voyage which does not last at all on my skin will last a couple days on my clothing.

Montale Black Aoud, or just about anything else by Montale, for that matter. Most of the 80s powerhouse fragrances are tenacious; Obsession, Azzaro, Lagerfeld, Red and Kouros have excellent longevity.

For whatever reason, Azzaro does not last on my skin. I second A*Men or any of the flankers. I personally do not care for the original A*Men......but it sure does last.

Any Montale except Greyland

I agree with several previously mentioned choices and won't repeat them except for TF Tuscan Leather which is in a class of it's own for longevity.

Another I'll mention in the reasonably priced group is L'Occitane Eau de Baux

Cartier Roadster really seems to hang around well on me. I stopped by a dept store a couple of months ago and smelled Tobacco Vanille for the first time. A few days ago I found the sprayed card in my jacket pocket and maybe my brain was having a laugh at my expense, but I really thought that I could still faintly smell the fragrance.

Chanel Pour Monsiuer Concentree'

After 30 years, countless fragrances and a LOT of dollars spent THIS is the only one I've found that lasts...and I mean really does last!

And forget that hype about fragrances that "last" or "smell" different depending on your own unique body chemistry; it was a marketing "myth" begun by Coco to make women think that No 5 would be a signature and unique scent for them because it mixed with their own.

I've had Tabac last 8+ hours, it easily reactivates when you work up a bit of sweat. I also like Aramis Original, Tuscany & D&G Light Blue. The biggest surprise was Avon Ironman, a blend of Melon or Grapefruit with Lavender and Spice, good projection and 10+ hours of longevity.

Renato1

I agree, short lasting scents are a waste of time.

Among my longest lasting,
Joop PH - lasts 12 days on shirts
Aramis - lasts 5 days on shirts
Annick Goutal Sables - lasts 4 days on skin, but not much power after first day.
Lagerfeld Photo - lasts 3 or 4 days on shirts
(I say shirts because I do not go that length of time without washing)
Clavin Klein Eternity - similar to previous one
L'Eau D'Issey - longest lasting light scent I have.
Ducati too, is good for two days wear.
Azzaro Chrome is the scent that never lets me down in hot weather when I'm doing the tourist thing.
Opium PH EDP (Not EDT) - great performer
Joop Homme Aftershave splash used as a cologne lasts about two days - longer than most EDTs

BUT - a big factor is skin chemistry, some people's skin just wipes out some scents. Before buying, go to a shop and check out the scents you might like on paper. Select six of them, and have each sprayed on either top or bottom of wrist, or top of hand.
Then check your watch and go away for three hours.
If at the three hour mark, the scent is still there with some strength, it will last a full working day under clothes, and you can go and buy one or more that have passed that test. Obviously, don't buy those that have totally disappeared at the three hour mark, or which are still there, but are fairly weak smelling.

Renato

Rive Gauche lasts forever on me. Some of the Tom Fords do as well. Tuscan Leather has already been mentioned, I also put on Amber Absolute this morning and still smell it pretty well now in the evening. Sometimes, with Oud Leather I can still smell it the next morning.

Pretty much most any fragrance, applied to pulse points, will "reactivate" when you work up a sweat. I drive a truck. I've had incidents in traffic where I've had to lock up the brakes or make a quick move due to some crazy driver or traffic, what have you...the sphincter factor is up, the seat clenched but wow...what a nice aroma (my cologne for that day) filling the cab. It's interesting. The can take you into the whole pheromone thing, too. Interesting, but another chapter.... Also, typically why deodorant is scented. The scent kicks up when you start to sweat, therefore you don't smell so much body odor funk.

For me nothing beats Fleur du Male. I agree with you about the longevity vs value issue for the most part, and it's a big reason why I'm drawn to the fragrance. I wear it when I go out cause I'll still be able to smell it the next morning, even after a shower.

Other notable fragrances that last on me are Tobacco Vanille, Le Male, Narciso Rodriguez, Polo, Acier Aluminium, and Fahrenheit.

The shirt I am wearing today is obviously the same shirt I wore on 5/23 because it still smells like Turquoise (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/267801-Scent-Fragrance-of-the-Day-2012?p=4145509&highlight=#post4145509) even though this frag only lasted 4 hours on my skin before turning into another powdery nightmare. I never would have guessed this frag to last for weeks on my clothing because it is such a light smelling frag to begin with.

If a frag smells better on clothing and lasts 100x longer when applied to clothing then why would anyone ever apply them to their skin? Of course the frag houses want you to spray their juice on your skin several times each day instead of just once every couple of weeks...ca-ching!

I don't think any of them last that long to be honest. They want you to buy more and more! I've had my fair share and Bvlgari is my favourite, but I'm going through the 'classic manly scents' of Old Spice, Jovan Musk and will buy Tabac soon. Not a lot of people I know wear those classics and women do notice them. They stand out from the designer 'boys' fragrances in the sterile age we live in! Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and lot's of Boss are as common as mud and I hate them. Since I started DE last December I have re-assessed my spending and now I couldn't bear to spend €50+ on an E.D.T. when I could get 6 tubs of Cella, Prorasso, or T.O.B.S., or 3 great Semogue brushes, or a Merkur 34C HD and a few 100 blades for the same money! Priorities! Priorities! Priorities!

I have to ask, are the frags you guys are listing colognes, EDTs or EDPs?

I just learned today from the lady at the frag counter that EDPs usually last the longest. Is there any truth to that?

Good question. Most of the frags named in this thread are EdTs, but there are a few exceptions, including Renato's Opium EdP, and ACMEMFG's Pinaud Clubman which is a very long lasting aftershave. The lady told you correctly, EdPs do usually last the longest between EdTs and EdPs, but that's not always the case. There are some EdPs that don't last as long as many EdTs, and there are some EdTs and even EdCs (colognes) and ASs that last longer than some EdPs. The difference between EdTs and EdPs is mostly, or by definition, the concentration of fragrance oils in the blend, with EdPs having a higher concentration than EdTs. But that's not the only factor that determines how long a scent lasts, as factors like what kind of oils are used, and what quality. And keep in mind that some frags come in both EdT and EdP version, and sometimes the ingredients are changed, not just the concentration of scent oils, which makes them a very different scent, not just stronger or weaker.

Personally, I think the variables make frags more interesting and fun to explore.

Wow.

Are you saying that the longevity of each frag, no matter what "Eau De..." it is, varies for each individual fragrance?

So samples are terribly important, aren't they?

I showered yesterday at 5:30pm after the gym, put on a half spray of TF Tuscan Leather on my chest and a half on my forearm, and rubbed the forearms together. Went out, spent a few hours outside in the heat and humidity, came home and went to bed, woke up this morning and took a scalding hot shower and put on some Wild Fern. Can still smell the Tuscan Leather on my forearms.

TF is a line of EDPs that lasts long, that's for sure.

But then again, I love the smell of White Suede after it dries...it's leathery, but it's clean...hence "White Suede".

Too bad about the price. I have about 4 different scents on both of my forearms and hands, and nothing smells as good as WS.

Exactly! Samples are important so that you can determine not only the longevity of a frag, but also whether or not you like it. It's just like food, only you can decide if you like it or not. :thumbup1:

I've tried to skim through most of these but if this has already been said, my apologies. The type of scent you are looking to wear plays a huge part in how long it will last as well.

Here is a scent pyramid:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QdJkJpFxwPI/T7Dd-MInMAI/AAAAAAAAHxQ/MSuj1jyiAn4/s1600/pyramide_parfum.gif

Most of what you wear will be made up of parts form this chart. If you choose a bergamot/rose scent then you would expect it to not have the staying power of a scent that has primary notes of cedar and clove. Even if the citrus/floral is an EdP and the wood/spice is an EdT this could possibly hold true.

While yes, some of the niche houses and bigger names will tend to have more staying power because of the use of better ingredients, you don't have to spend a ton to find something you like. Sample some stuff in your price range until you find something that you like. The LAST thing you want to do is buy a frag outside your price range because of its longevity only to decide you don't like it after 6 months... Trust me... I've done it.

I just learned today from the lady at the frag counter that EDPs usually last the longest. Is there any truth to that?

Men's EDPs always last longer than their EDT versions. But there aren't many mens' EDPs because the men's EDTs very often last a long time anyway, often longer than women's EDPs - I've bought lots of EDPs for my wife and former lady friends, and sometimes their EDPs are only really good for 4 hours. The basenotes in mens' EDTs often have woods or leather, and these usually last a lot longer than the floral basenotes in the women's EDPs.

The term "Cologne Spray" on American bottles is the same as EDT in European bottles. If you see Eau de Cologne (EDC) on European bottles, they usually have a weaker or lighter output than the EDT versions. They may have less longevity as well - but not always. My bottle of Guerlain Vetiver EDC isn't as loud as my Guerlain Vetiver EDT, but it lasts significantly longer.

Renato

Seems unanimous that Polo Green and Aramis are the "Holy Grail" of durability. They also smell uniquely masculine in their own right. I own them and love them. A distant third, for me, would be Geo. Polo Green doesn't last as long as it did in High School. Of course, then we doused ourselves with a half bottle each day. Maybe that has somethign to do with it? It still lasts a long time. Love it. Wore it yesterday.

Aramis has more output than Joop Homme for the 4 or 5 days that it lasts, but Joop keeps going a week longer at the lower output.
The current version of Polo Green doesn't strike me as ultra long lasting, but that's happening to all the old classics.

There seem to be an awful lot of definitions of "long lasting" in this thread, ranging from a whole day to forever.

I've found that most scents last an 8 hour working day in an office, and some last a few hours longer. That's what I'd call "standard", and many of the nominated scents here fall into that category. To me, a scent would have to last at least 24+ hours with strength to qualify as long lasting.
