View Full Version : How many shave soaps do you have ready to use at any given time?

And how do you store them?

I just got a puck of the fabled MWF from my fiance for my b-day but I already have a puck of something else in my bowl. Now I am considering buying another bowl and just having two in rotation. However, counter space is limited and I do not want to have a cabinet full of bowls of soap. What do you guys do as I know some of you are soap junkies?

I only have about 8 in rotation. I keep them in different mugs that I have picked up over the years at thrift stores.

I have nine soaps in my rotation and five more that are not opened. I store the unopened soaps in whatever container they came in. The other soaps either came in glass or wooden bowls and that is what I keep them in - except for Cella which I have cut into chunks. One chunk that I am using is kept in a Tupperware container. The remainder has been vacuum sealed in a food saver.

You can see how my soaps are used in my rotation. The picture below was taken some time ago and since then I have quite a few more razors, soaps, and other goodies. I will update the picture in my gallery when I have some time. I installed the sliding wire drawers. On the right side on the top I keep my soaps and creams that are in my rotation. The remainder of the soaps and creams are kept in the middle drawer.

Ackvil, very impressive setup!

Some of them sit on a wire corner shelf on the vanity that my wife got for my stuff. Some are in a drawer. They don't take up too much space.

You can stack three or four Pyrex containers on top of each other quite easily. I only keep 5 soaps in my rotation at a time, so it only uses up the counter space of two Pyrex containers (since the rest are stacked on top of the first two).

My soap drawer is at its limit in bowls. Since I have two Harris soaps in wooden bowls. I plan on purchasing just the refill pucks for the other two Harris soaps and rotating the four pucks in and out of the two bowls. The loose ones I'll just store in a heavy duty Baggie and keep them somewhere else.

I rotate MWF, Cella, Vitos, Tabac, Fume, Proraso White, Proraso Green, Palmolive stick, palmolive cream, arko, derby stick, tweex stick, erasmic cream, and a menthol cream (white tube, blue lettering, the name of which escapes me now!). The only ones I've used on more than one successive day were the MWF, the Fume and the Tabac.

I think I'm down to about 15. The goal is to get to single digits by the end of the year.

About 6 are in pyrex bowls, the rest are in wooden bowls or their original container.

I have about 15, or so ,soaps in my current rotation and another 8 to 10? in the pantry. I keep about 10 in Old Spice mugs and the rest in a variety of wooden bowls. Most of the stuff in the pantry is in its original packaging. Additionally there are soap samples laying around from manufactures and friends. I don't have any single method of storing soaps but Old Spice mugs are my primary method of choice for soaps.

I have 6/7 that I can reach out and grab I bought a lot of tins that WCS sells for cheap (4 bucks?) I like the look of them, and at 4 bucks no great loss if anything happens to them. (I also have a few more that I don't like as much/winter soaps...) But the tins stack really easily they don't lock or anything. BUT they take up very little space.

Ikea has these spice containers.about 5$ for three of them .they have a magnet on the bottom with a clear top..
put all your pucks in there...you can put the label that he soap comes in on the underside of hte top..so you can identify it.
you have so many options with this..
if you have a cabinet..attach an old baking pan either to the door ..or one of the walls inside..and you can just stick them to the pan..
if no cabinet..attach a baking pan to the wall..this setup has almost no profile..you can put it anywhere and it won't look cluttered..
number of soaps is limited to the area of your metal backing..
on the counter itself i like to have one soap, one brush and one razor out..

3 - Tabac, Trumper Rose and MWF each in bowls in the bathroom cabinet.

Well, currently I have four. My eventual plan is to have 365 sets of soaps and corresponding creams in my collection when I kick off. I think the only thing limiting your collection is the amount of space your wife is willing to put up with...or your household goods weight limit if you are in the military. As we all have noted, its the journey...a soap/cream used once is a soap/cream well enjoyed.

I have Tabac, MWF, Cella, P.160, Arko, Irisch Moos, Proraso and DR Harris Arlington ready for immediate use, plus a Old Spice mug that I use to try various samples that I have been given or bought.

I also have a stash of other soaps waiting to move into rotation (about 5) plus backup stocks for those in my permanent rotation (Cella, MWF, Tabac, Arko, Arlington)

I am trying to keep the number smaller, because soaps last forever.

Currently I have MW Lime, RR Boston Tea Party, the new RR La Famigilia Don Marco and Cumba Cheech, and a round of Haslinger that I haven't even opened yet. I really don't want to have more than 5 soaps in the rotation at any time, so they can all stay in good shape until they're all gone. At least that's the thought process......

Somewhere between 25 and 30, excluding samples. If they didn't come in their own plastic container (or are a shave stick) I put them in the Glad small bowls. They fit most soaps perfectly (no spinning) with plenty of room to build a lather if I choose to. If I drop one they just bounce, no worries about cracking and shards of glass. I don't care for the wood bowls so the few soaps I have purchased with their wood bowls (always on the BST) I just throw the empty wood bowl under the sink. I don't have a rotation per se, I just grab which ever soap strikes my fancy that day. They all manage to get to spend a little time with a brush each month.

Yes I realize I need serious, professional help but that would cut into my shaving fund.... :blushing:

I happened to have been gifted about 4 old spice mugs, and now each one has its own soap. Plus I have an old fashioned scuttle that has a tiny soap sample in. The scuttle dish is so shallow i cant even fit a 1.5oz puck in it properly. So back to the question, I have 5 different soaps in my rotation, plus 2 or 3 creams. I haven't mastered lathering any of them, every day is an adventure!

Looks like you may have triggered duty charges when she crossed the border with those. If you lived in the US there is a $100 mailed gift daily duty exemption that we take advantage of rather than pay duty upon entering the US but I can't help unfortunately with Australian law as I haven't ever been there. Nice stash, though. You should be happy that your wife isn't one of those that gripe about spending money on shaving supplies.

I had one plain, clear glass mug that replaced a more usual mug with some sort of logo, when the "real" mug was broken a few years back. It had VDH Select in it. I bought a plastic coffee mug of generous size with advertising for some Real Estate firm after experiencing my reformation from carts back to more Traditional shaving tools.

That one got VDH DeLuxe, never used before, from a stash of traditional supplies I'd put away here and forgot. Then, after retelling some stories at B&B, as best as I could recall, from my very early adolescence, I looked on eBay for a mug from Old Spice or Burma Shave. That opened the Acquisition Disorder gate, and resulted in my present count of five, not counting the too-small and too-recent OS mug that I should do something with . .

There is a different soap in each of the five, plus, I have the one Italian soft soap in its container, the Cella.

I went a little nuts last year :scared:
19 hard soaps incl. sticks, 6 soft soaps and 7 creams
I rotate by season with certain scents, and usually use a soap for 1 wk then change up, sometimes longer though if I'm really enjoying a soap.

Lets say each product = 100 shaves. I shave 4 times/week. That's ~15 years worth of shaves!!!
I wonder if my Cella will be spoiled by 2028??

4, but I have the intention of figuring out my favourite and culling the rest.

at the moment: Mystic Water>Strop Shoppe SE>Edwin Jagger>Crabtree & Evelyn. Plus a Speick stick that's the best for quick lathers. I have some Mike's Natural on the way.

Once I've decided which is the best soap (it'll take a lot to knock Mystic Water off its perch), I'll cull the rest but keep the Speick stick around for travel.

At the most I might decide on a summer and winter scent from MW. Once I've decided on my favourite I have absolutely no intention of owning more than 2-3 soaps.

Hi guys. I've been wet shaving for about a year. I used creams exclusively (some of the big names like CF, AOS, TOBS, etc). I just purchased and tried the Proraso soap in the white jar for sensitive skin. I paired that with the preshave in the white jar. WOW! My face feels great after 3 easy passes with my Merkur 38C. Best shave in recent memory.

My question to you veterans...Is this an indication that I'm better off using soaps instead of creams?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

...I counted.

96 soaps, 26 shave sticks.

(There were more at one time... and I've been chasing this stuff seriously for five years, now.)

I didn't count creams, but those are far fewer than there are soaps.

In the interests of full disclosure: these are all "in the rotation" technically - but I tend to use MdC, Cella, Klar Kabinett (for example) more frequently than I use Pecksniff's (they call it a cream, but it's not, and I don't like it), or Houbigant Fougere Royale, or Mitchell's Wooflat (can't ever get a good lather with either of those luminaries). I've lately used Italian (and Austrian and German) soft soaps more than English or US hard soaps. A lot of my soaps are uncommon or long out-of-production and I got them for their novelty. (I will say that my vintage W. German Tabac shavestick is wonderful and far better than the very good current production Tabac soap - I use that sparingly. Ditto my tallow English Fern and Blenheim Bouquet.) I'm not really interested in using my Pinaud's soap, or my Charbert "Of Thee I Sing" soap in a kettle drum bowl.

I do have a bunch of boutique melt n pour soaps - and I use 'em occasionally. I am exploring creams again, as I think I mentioned in an earlier post.

Novelty! Variety!

I store my soaps and creams in flat plastic storage containers shoved under the bed.

My face almost always feels better after using a tallow based soap with lanolin. Creams I use on an occasion are CF lime, CF Cedarwood/sandalwood, Nancy Boy, Proraso Red, and Speick. I always pair creams with a soap, but I usually use a soap alone. My face just feels more hydrated and softer when using a soap.

And how do you store them?I have 15 soaps in rotation. Mama Bear sent me some of her empties which I use to store my soaps. The hard soaps I grate and pack into empty containers with a bartender muddler, the glycerines I melt and poor into empty containers and the soft soaps can simply be pressed to fit empty containers. I scale and print image of logos to fit covers and mount with spray adhesive. I store these containers behind the bathroom door in a pantry door rack (https://www.google.com/webhp?source=search_app#hl=en&tbm=shop&q=pantry+door+rack).

61 soaps and 13 creams. A lot of stuff is repeats especially my P160(4), mdc (5) and yardley (10). I'm working on using up my creams which all happen to be very good ones. Figured the soaps could wait. I'm doing my best to use one cream at a time. To switch things up I have my MdC, yardley, AK 1869, p160 duro, and la toja stick at my disposal. Rest is stored but easily accessible for sniffing.
