I recently inherited an alu handle Gillette Tech which I have grown very fond of. Despite being in generally good condition the plating was looking a bit tired, which had started me looking for NOS ones. Then I found out that Onotoman on here offers a replating service, so I posted the head off to him this morning (only £10 to do the head BTW!), thus saving the cost of a NOS Tech... and promptly ordered the Muhle black fibre brush I'd been eyeing up. I am now trying to justify the fact that the replating and the new brush cost about what I would have paid for a mint Tech from Executive Shaving and therefore I have saved money.
I used to roll my eyes when SWMBO did that with shoes. :innocent:
My inventory is now up to:
Creams - 4
Soaps - 1 (coveting others)
Razors - 3 (awaiting Weber in post)
Brushes - 2 (awaiting Muhle in post)

Seems logical to me! I might have to employ the cost savings to my purchases as well

Interesting! For how long? Seems like you could easily go 80+ years on a safety razor :jump:

And I authorise the cost of the replating (but then I would :-)
Also put it to your other half that you will use that razor for the rest of you life whereas (if anything like my wife) she will wear the shoes once, maybe twice then leave in the bottom of the wardrobe for many years before finally donating to charity - same with handbags, dresses....
My wife even uses MY shaving brushes and cream for shaving her legs (and such), then asks 'do you not think you have enough old brushes and soaps?' The cheek of it - a man can never have enough:
Vintage Razors
Vintage Shaving Brushes
New Soaps and Creams
Vintage Fountain Pens
Vintage Miner's Safety Lamps (OK, that's another story!)

BTW I've got a SS '40s replated by Dave (Onotoman) and it's just a GREAT job! The razor looks fantastic!

Can you claim the tax back on shaving equipment on the basis that you need to shave for work?

I too amortize the cost of my Shaving Tools and Equipment over their expected useful life.
Luckily, I can amortize the cost over a several lives because I have a 15 Year Old Son and a soon to be 4 Year Old Son.
Otherwise, for the amount of stuff that I have acquired (RAD) both with Straights, DEs and SEs I might start thinking that I wasted a lot of money but ... then, I could look at my use of the Shaving Tools and Equipment as a Hobby or that I am dabbling in a Lost Art.
Or I could say that shaving is a form of entertainment and the price for using the Shaving Tools and Equipment each week is the price of going to a movie.
Ah ... now I feel better that I know that my money was well spent.
Now ... I think I will look to see on the internet if there is a Soap or Cream or Brush that I would like to have. Then, maybe I will see if there is a Straight that is looking good or maybe an Open Comb Razor or ...
