View Full Version : Shaving has become awesome

That's right - that dreary activity that I loathed doing over and over again has become something I look forward to. I got sick of the expensive cartridges and gimmicky blade systems - I mean getm real ... 5 blades. Jerks. And I don't want your lousy lubricating strip, it makes my face feel weird. So I found myself using crappy twin blade disposables just so I wouldn't resent spening $$$ per blade on the Mach 3 which was my favourite otherwise. Then I got curious about using a shaving brush... and then I found myself ordering the following:
- Green tub or Proraso soap
- Vulfix #28 boar bristle brush
- Edwin Jagger Classic Safety Razor, Barley Handle
- sampler blade pack

So I started off loading up a derby blade.

I admit I was surprised at how heavy the EJ razor was, I love the feel of it. And I had never touched a DE blade before, I was surprised at how thin they are.

So I was nervous about my first shave, hopefully it wouldn't be a bloodbath.

I went down to the kitchen and found a nice ceramic dip-bowl - 3.5 inches diameter, just over 1.5 inches deep.

Filled it with hot water and dunked the brush in there and took a nice hot shower. I have always shaved after showering, so that was always my shaving prep. I then shook the brush dry, got somne of the Proraso soap on there and then used a little bit of water in the bowl to get some lather.

I loved applying the soap lather to my face with the warm brush. Will definitely keep using the ceramic bowls as they retain heat nicely.

Enjoyed a blood-free first ever DE shave in one pass! Oh yeah, I am that awesome.

Have since bought some Aqua Velva, Clubman Pinaud, Thayers Witch Hazel and some Herban Cowboy natural shaving balm and I loook forward to my shaving ritual every morning. I love the eucalyptus smell from the Proraso on my face in the morning. That stuff is great. Thinking of getting some of the pre-shave cream from Proraso as well and some aftershave splash.

The mornings are better, so life is better!

Thanks to all the posters on this board that spend time putting up buying and shaving guides as well as reviews. I am so happy with my new shaving kit.

Congrats and welcome !! I was like you hated shaving because the stuff made for the masses really performs horrible and is expensive.

Welcome, Jeb!

Noooo... now you're going to prompt him to get one or more ADs!
We can't let that happen to one of our members now, can we? Actually it's one of the things we're best at...

Welcome to B&B and Wet Shaving ...

"Enjoyed a blood-free first ever DE shave in one pass! Oh yeah, I am that awesome." Now try it with a blade in the razor!

Wish you continue success, but there will be blood ...

Welcome, and kudos on your first shave, I'm new too and it is great isn't it. As someone mentioned it does just keep getting better particularly when you find a blade that suits you best

I have read a number of accounts from first time DE wetshavers that make me nervous just reading them. They go on and on about their set-up and prep. You seem to get the right balance of practical and technical. You were able to get a relaxed first time DE shave because you kept it simple and did not overplan it. You are awesome, but you will cut yourself sometime because you are going to get over-confident and nick yourself when you are in a hurry some day- keep a steady hand and your eye on the blade but get a styptic pencil for when you don't! Happy Shaving and welcome!!!!!

Welcome to B&B! You're exactly right...this definitely makes mornings much more enjoyable. I find myself waking up a good 30 minutes before I probably should just so that I'm not rushed. Even when work beckons in the early am...the time spent on a good shave (and cup of coffee) is priceless. All the best and welcome to the club.

Sounds like you're off to a great start! I am about a month in & lovin' every minute of it! Really, after 40 years of shaving, I am just learning!
