When I set a bevel - do I need to first "dull" the blade by running it over glass a time or two or no?

I have some flea market straights I'm currently looking to practice on and none of them would shave arm hair (or anything else for that matter) when I got them.

I'm using the following lapping film sheets for this project.

12 1200 grit
9 1800 grit
5 4000 grit
3 8000 grit
1 14000 grit
.3 50000 grit

Thanks

You don't have to do this. The purpose of dulling a blade is to give yourself a consistent starting point. It's a completely optional thing and some people don't do it at all ever. If you have some super dull blades from the flea market there is really no reason at all to do this.

No need to dull the flea market straights. The fact they are that dull means they are... well... dull. :biggrin1:

No you don't. Since you are getting started, you may want to mark the edge with a Sharpie. Doing so will help show what is happening as you hone.
