View Full Version : Which Gillette adjustable do you prefer?

For those of you that have tried more than one of the common Gillette adjustables, which is your preference? For me, I give a little nudge to the Slim Adjustable, however I hold all of my vintage Gillettes in high regard for allowing me to put my Merkurs in mothballs [so to speak].
P.S. Please try to not let the fact that Fatboys costs more sway you. What's a few shekels when you get a satisfying shave?

For me no Doubt its the Slim all the way, what an awesome shaver, with the perfect length handle, Perfect weight. Cant get no better Gillette Adjustable then the Slim :o)

I actually started with a Fat Boy then got hooked on 3 piece razors.

I have all three, plus a short handled SA, and my preference is for the Slim. I like the balance of the Slim better than the fat-boy.

The Slim and the Fat Boy are both really good razors, but I slightly prefer the Fat Boy. I'm not a fan of head-heavy razors, and the Slim is one of those. Plus, I feel better grip and more in control with the balance and thickness of the Fat Boy.

I like the Super Adjustable!
Back in the veritable dawn of the Black Beauties, I may have had both lengths, but like the SE I had to start with, and the several Injectors, those didn't make it the entire 50-60 year trip (or are still hidden here at home somewhere none of them belong), the long handle one, if it's an accurate recollection, hasn't showed up. I have been checking out the site's BST twice a day, and making some bids on eBay, but I'm not bidding large amounts. (I may not have it any more because I didn't like it.)
I really like the "Medium" length pair of Slim and "regular" SA much better than any of the several "short" DE razors I have tried again this go-round. My hands, although not broad, require large gloves because my fingers are long. Smaller razors work fine for me after some minor adjustments, but the Mediums seem to feel much more natural to me.

I own one of each and I would have to say..... my R-41 (2011) or Slant.
If I had to pick one I would say the Super Adjustable because it was my first razor.

Wow I don't have any adjustable but looking at the results to see what the general consensus is does nothing to help me find what people like, those results are damn close!

It's appears to be a two-way tie between the Gillette Fat Boy and the Gillette Slim. Too close to call.

So fat or skinny, just no black handle people like 'em gold :)
What an unhelpful poll  I guess the slims are cheaper so that definitely should go for something.

+1 precisely.
the Fatboy is a better and more comfortable shaver for me. I sold my slim, but my Fatboy is tops.

I voted for slim. I've just used it a lot more than the others. It's my main tool for evaluating new blades. Now, I should say that I get fabulous shaves with the super adjustable, and I do get great shaves from the fatboy, but using the slim is a little like coming home after a long business trip... it's comfortable.

I bled profusely when I used a Fatboy years ago (47 +/- years ago). Operator error, but I still hate them. I have a Slim in rotation and enjoy it. I own a Super Adjustable, but don't use it much. It is okay, I guess, but a light weight compared to the Slim. I used my Merkur long handled classic on a trip this week. The first "modern" razor I bought a few years back, and it was fantastic using it again. I keep it in the travel kit.

Fatty is the Daddy. Slim will probably win the poll, though. It's easier to get, and it's still a fine shaver.

Fatboy... I like the heft and the balance point.

I still have my two Slims, and the "Short" Super Adjustable, and all are within a very few grams of one another. Under the black coating is the usual brass handle metal. I might have once had a "long" Super, however, the memory is fleeting, as it would have been when it was all new and all brass, no plastic in its head. The trio all have the same feel in my hands, the same balance. The Fat Boy is the one that in my memory, had an odd balance to it.
I compared it at the time to the similarly shaped Aristocrat, heirloom gift, I've had since it was given to me, NOS, in 1954. I've kept the Aristocrat in almost new condition, but did shave with it twice recently. The handle seems short in my hands, as do most of the older Gillettes before the Slim, like the Red Tip that gave me a really nice shave here very recently. I may have to reacquire another Fat Boy to confirm my fuzzy old memories, and I expect to do so without spending a fortune.
The Red Tip was only $8, along with a Schick G-3, in its case, with dispenser and some blades, for another $10. That's not the cheapest shot of all, though. Over the weekend, for $2.50 plus $2.00 shipping, I won a Gillette fat handle Tech from eBay that should be here soon.

I get very similar shaves from my slim and black beauty. If I have to choose though I choose the black beauty.

Fatboy, It's the one I started with and love the way the shorter handle feels. And I can still shave under my nose. I do own a slim as well. Both are great shavers.

I do love the weight and balance of the Fatboy, so that's my vote.

Perfectly stated. While I still do really thoroughly enjoy shaving with the Slim Adjustable, I have to give the edge to the Fatboy. I like the added heft and thicker handle, plus I feel that the gnurls on the Fatboy's handle give a slightly better grip.

Both the FB and slim are good razors. However, I prefer the balance and weight of the FB.

I don't have a Super Adjustable, but I do have a Fatboy and a Slim. And for me, the Fatboy edges it - similar to others, I find the weight and balance make it feel just right for me.

That's not fair! That's two pieces more than a FatBoy!

So far the Slim is just ahead of the Slim Super Adjustable (black handle). As I do not possess a Fatboy (yet) I cannot pass judgement on it.

Aristocrat (Gold-plated Slim Adjustable). Mechanically the same, but the gold plating is prettier! :1eye:

Adjustable aren't my go to razors, but when I do it's the black long-handle super adjustable.

I have all three, and like a few others- Fat Boy. It is a tad short, in the handle, in a purely "impressionistic" way (I can't say I've ever found myself fumbling, but the movement doesn't flow quite as well as the SA). And, mentioning the Super Adjustable, were it made of brass, it would, without doubt, be my favorite. I like its length, it is slightly thicker than the Slim, but is a touch light and I have a strong prejudice against aluminum & zinc.

I have both a Fat Boy and a Slim. As others have said, both great razors. I find it easier to maneuver the Slim, with its lower-profile head, under my nose, so I give a slight advantage to the Slim.

I would say the Slim since they are still plentiful at a fair price, and it is also my birth year razor :)

I voted for the Fatboy, but they are very, very close (Slim and Fatboy). I give the slight nod to the Fatboy because I do not favor long handle DE's.
I don't care for the plastic looking black handle adjustable.

I only have the slim adjustable, and love it, I really want to try a fatboy though. Maybe next month, I've spent enough money on shaving this month.

I had to go with the Super Adjustable, I have 2 Fatboys, and my go to razor is my long handled Super Adjustable. As well I just received a short handled in the mail today, so will be trying that out tomorrow.
