Happy Monday....

Schick Injector w/Schick blade
Bic Metal for upper lip & touchups
Simpson PJ1 -Best-
Proraso soap
QED DaVinci H2O
Proraso cream a/s
Trumper's Limes SF

Saint Charles Shave spritz

Had a heck of the time getting the Proraso to lather but after 3 attempts I finally got an okay lather.
Got a few more nicks and weepers than I'm accustomed to but the shave was close and my face is smooth.
The Proraso aftershave is okay but it was not love at 1st sight.
Going to have to give Charles at QED a call soon as my DaVinci and Lavender H2O's are getting low...I'm so tempted to add an jar of Castle Forbes cream.
The Saint Charles Shave pump jammed up after 2 sprays so I am about 2 spritzes light :tongue_sm

Have a great week.

- Merkur HD with Merkur Blade

- T&H West Indian Limes Cologne

Doesn't get much more old school than this Monday shave....

1940s Gillette Super Speed (thanks Steve!)
Israeli Personna - first use
Vulfix 2234
Classic Shaving hard soap, sandalwood
Feather A/S
Agua di Parma EDT (thanks Scotto!)

Man was this an outstanding shave today! That Gillette is a fantastic razor. The Israeli felt a touch sharper than a Merkur, maybe comparable to a Derby.

- Gillette Fat Boy
- Derby Extra Day 1
- EJ for C&E Best Badger
- QED Sandalwood Soap
- Thayer's Rose WH
- Taylor's #74 Limes EDT

- I now remember why I made the Feather my blade of choice. After two days of no shaving, the Derby had to drag through the whiskers seemingly pulling them out whereas the Feather effortlessly slices and dices. I'll probably continue the rest of the week with the Derby to see how it fairs against shorter stubble, not to mention it did provide an irritation free shave.

- Gillette FatBoy update: After a good week's worth of shaves, I have to say that I have been impressed with the Gillette's ability. In the beginning I suffered super irritation, but with a bit of refinement I have seemingly found my groove.

Art, I usually snap 2 pics of every SOTD.

One for each site usually? When I have the time to take a pic, I usually have to make two or at least save the best one as "best for web" for the other forum and keep the original for B & B.

This morning's mess:
Merkur Futur with a Feather
Simpson Chubby 2
Truefitts Ultimate Shave, etc.
Trumper's Skin Food
Nancy Boy's Cooling Gel
Kiehls Moisturizing Facial Fuel Gel
(Just realized I forgot to put on cologne, something I rarely forget to do!)

Also, I decided today to stop using the Feather blades... They're great and close, but just too cutty for me. In the parts where I get closest, I get just as close with a Merkur in my Futur (which is to say DAMN BBS close), so why suffer the blood? There is no reason, that's correct. So, soon enough, I will have most if not all of the Feathers out of my shave closet.

I had an audition today, and I'd been up late last night finishing a paper. I should have spent an extra 20 minutes sleeping in, but instead, I decided to shave! Used some Proraso (quite a bit, actually -- did a good job waking me up), my goofy old unidentified Gillette razor with Merkur, King of Shave pre-shave oil, and a boar brush (soon to be replaced!).

Actually, I tried using the Proraso brushless at first, but the shave was terrible! My razor was "skipping" a whole lot and I was terrified that I was going to slice my jaw open. So, back to the brush for me.

So I got my AOS samples yesterday (could you tell?). The shampoo was very nice, but was very similar to Paul Mitchel Tea Tree. I wasn't a fan of the conditioner. Worked well, but there was something pungent in the smell that bothered me. The cream, while unscented (boo!), worked VERY well. Probably the easiest to lather I've seen. Very slick as well. Good shave all around. The ASB was a little heavy at first, but absorbed decently. I wouldn't buy it though. EDT was nice, but my wife turned her nose up at it. So out it goes.

After using the derby three more times, I have re-affirmed why I like the feather blades so much more. While the end result is pretty much the same, the feathers are much sharper and much more smooth...in my opinion.

After two weeks with the Fat Boy I don't know if I should switch back to the SS of Merkur HD. I probably will go back to the HD next week, but on top of that I am now wondering if the Futur can outdo the FB...and I'm not ready to go through any more acquisition disorders for another month or two.

B&B Cologne

When I first received the B&B Cologne I was not overly enamoured with it. After one wearing it just seemed too strong so it went onto the shelf and stayed there until very recently. Approximately two weeks ago I was trying to decide what cologne to apply and opened the B&B for a sniff. Hmmm... Wore it and really enjoyed the scent. Wore it again a couple of days later and, once again, really enjoyed it.

Now, of course, I am starting to feel a tinge of regret about not getting in on the recent B&B decanting.

Proraso Shaving Cream in a green tube

Truefitt and Hill 1805 Cologne

I originally didn't like the Proraso when I first got it, but I wanted to give it another try. I got a great shave today, but I didn't much like the cooling action the menthol did to my face. I know some of you guys do, I just don't care for it. But I'm willing to make a few sacrifices for a great shave, so I think I'll be including this in my rotation more often.

Scotto.... no joke... I think YOU might actually be a fan of this brush. You like small brushes, you like "scratchy" best badger hair, and you use a fair amount of soaps (which I imagine this sucker would be pretty effective at).

1940s Gillette Super Speed
Israeli Personna day 4
Vulfix 2234
Nancy Boy shave cream
Nancy Boy cooling A/S
Trumpers Bay Rum EdT

Well, nicked to hell again. Geez.
Might have been the day 4 Israeli, who knows. I got an excellent lather this morning - thick and creamy and going on like super thick paint - enough for 4 passes. Weepers galore and that NB cooling after shave stings like crazy just like the days of old. Sigh...

Dennis

Try a bit more water for the Nancyboy , I couldnt understand that cream at all till I heard its a cream to be used without a brush aswell. I used more water then I normally use and then lather became more slickery I dont think getting a thick lather helps you anything then painting on a Santa Clause beard . the thickness means nothing you need to go for a good slipery effect. Havent shaved with Israeli's in a long time so I cant comment if that gave you the weepers

Rene - I've used more water, less water, more cream, less, cream, you name it. I have tried everything except bottled water with this cream and if I have to go that route, it ain't worth it as so much other stuff works just fine. The Israeli worked beautifully on days 1-3 so maybe day 4 was too much. I will try NB again with this setup and a fresh blade, later though. -- Dennis

C&E Best Badger
T&H Shave Soap

T&H WI Limes ASB and Cologne

After using the derby three more times, I have re-affirmed why I like the feather blades so much more. While the end result is pretty much the same, the feathers are much sharper and much more smooth...in my opinion.

After two weeks with the Fat Boy I don't know if I should switch back to the SS of Merkur HD. I probably will go back to the HD next week, but on top of that I am now wondering if the Futur can outdo the FB...and I'm not ready to go through any more acquisition disorders for another month or two.

No comparison in my opinion Todd. The Futur is in a different league when it comes to mowing down hair and I love the auditory feedback you get as the hair is falls to the Futur/Feather combination. Having said that, it does take a little more technique and a light touch, but I personally think it gives a superior shave.

This doesn't happen often, but today I enjoyed that rare experience: a perfect shave with a straight- not a nick, not a weeper, not a scratch. Perhaps I was particularly lucky with my last honing session. Don't laugh- honing a str8 is far more difficult than theory would dictate. It's part magic, part science, and a good helping of luck. One improper stroke can negate many minutes of work.
In any event, I got a beautiful N-S pass, then managed to not screw up the tortuous S-N pass. Normally, I use a soap with a straight (that Willi G. puck is gettin' mighty puny looking), but the Taylor rose was up to the task, and my a/s selection worked particularly well today.

If I could get a shave like this every day, I would give away all of my DE's and injectors. But I can't, so I won't. In fact, I'm going to order another right now.:tongue_sm

Sue at Saintcharles makes this soap. Unfortunately, it was a limited run. You may want to pm her for details. This is a very nice soap that is indicative of the quality soaps Sue produces. This soap has a dominant orange scent with a faint vetiver scent.

Years ago, bar soap (very drying esp. in winter) or canned gel which was less drying, but still dry. Baby oil worked well, but I got sick of cleaning the slickness off of the shower floor all the time. Then my own unfragranced cakes. I also tried Satin Care which came with the Venus gift set.

John, the Orange Sorbet smells like the creamsicles you had when you were a kid. It's not a super strong scent like a lot of Sue's soaps, but I think that's a good call on her part for this one. It's a rather fun soap as it's very different than anything I've tried. Top notch lather as well.

Brian, my initial thoughts are that it's a cologne worth having for the price. My favorite Sandalwood cologne has always been Floris. I have tried Trumpers, Taylors and few others but I always go back to Floris. I have only been wearing it a few hours and I can still smell it. I will have to reserve final judgement until the end of the day.
