View Full Version : Odd font style in "Aristocrat" lettering

Hey everybody,

Since I acquired my 1930's Aristocrat I have known that the font style used in the lettering on the inside of the lid seemed quite odd. It's almost as if it has been faked but it is deeply and cleanly imprinted on the material. It just seems downright odd that the font style, which almost seems like an Arial or Helvetica type, is so different from other Aristocrat cases.

Has anybody else seen this style of lettering before? Ideas?

Notice the font here isn't at all like the standard font used on the Aristocrat line through the years. (click the image for a hi-res version)

Thanks,
Todd

I agree with you that it looks odd, but I've seen that style before. Here's a recent example:

It's not like it's an afterthought -- it doesn't look like they quite vertically centered the logo on the headliner like they did, say, with the NEW DeLuxe Criterion cases. Even though they're not quite the same fonts, that style of "Aristocrat" imprint feels odd the same way the "De Luxe Big Boy" or "The New" imprints below do. They're perfectly correct, they just feel wrong.

Hmm. Thanks for that Porter. I feel much better knowing there are similar examples out there. I agree, it just doesn't feel quite right. We have gotten used to the distinctive font used in the iconic Aristrocrat brand.

I wonder if it is as simple as different stamping machines of the time not having the same font loaded in them. I suppose possible reasons for this would be due to cost limitations or poor QA practices.

It looks as if they had a lots made up, then stamped them with whatever set they were putting them in. That would account for the different font and brightness of the text. Just my opinion though.
