Hi Guys
I just got this #77 and I'd like to get it re-plated. First though I'd like to take it apart. Does anyone know how to do this? I've got a 2 pce slant that came apart with a small tug but this razor isn't going that easily. Thanx for your help. The reason I want to take it apart is I have a plater close to where I live but he can't work with TTOs etc so I have to take stuff apart for him. I should clarify. I know you twist the knob to release the cap to change blades but I want to dismantle the knob from the rest of the barrel as well

Hey Mark
No, there's a ring of some sort in the barrel that prevents the bottom knob from falling out when you undo the cap to change blades. I just don't know how to get the bottom knob out from the barrel.

I dont think you need to remove the bottom part to replate it, as gillette Replated there TTO fully assembled.

It's an O-ring of some type. But I agree, you don't have to take it apart to replate it, and if you do, the replaters will be better equiped to do so.

The handle was designed to keep the bottom knob in place. If you force the knob from the barrel, you may break or distort the mechanism in the handle. Then when you try to put the knob back in place, it may keep falling out.
The mechanism on my #77 is loose so the knob does drop out of the handle which is not supposed to happen.

Isn't it just a retaining ring like Merkur uses now?
I thought, but I may be wrong, that it's a ring with a slit in it that you can wedge open a bit more to snug it in.
I have a #77 or #88 that is missing the retaining ring, but they have a groove on the knob where on would go.
Here's what they look like on a Merkur progress knob. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/256817-Mergress-Just-Arrived!!?p=3546343#post3546343

Is it a retaining ring like the current Merkurs? Mine doesn't have that so that may be the reason why it's dropping out. I thought it was a crimping issue like a Ranger Tech or Super Speed.
I did notice that the 'crimp' on the handle is quite narrow and the groove on the inner knob piece a lot wider. I'll try to post pictures later.
If you take the bottom knob off the #77 razor it will no longer work like it was intended. And if it is simply for the benefit of replating, no need to disassemble it. Unless you want the bottom knob to be plated with a different metal. All the reliable replaters can replate razors -- even FatBoys -- without taking them apart. And the 2-piece #77/#88 is such a beauty -- don't make it into a 3-piece razor.
By the way, it is possible to replate it yourself. Have you looked at Caswell (http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/index.html)?

Thanx guys, I'm not going to try and take the razor apart any longer. I've realized it is the way it's supposed to be and I'll get it plated that way. See, I was going to get it chromed and the guys I deal with need it apart. So now I'll leave it together and get someone else to do the plating....Rhodium, here I come...hah
