I've been reading threads throughout the forum for a while now as I want to change my shaving method and go for a straight Razor. I had seriously considered buying the Feather Artist Club RG or SS razor but I had also looked at a Dovo straight. Each time I think I have my mind made up and am about to click buy on one or the other of these choices I change my mind. So for now I've decided to put my wallet back in my coat and take some more time, ask some questions and generally make a more informed decision. As far a a straight razor is concerned while I love the idea but I'm not sure I'd have the patience for the stroping and honeing ect, especially if I can't get it right as seems to be the case with some ppl. As for the feather I do like the simplicity and ease of use(maybe) but some reviews seem to suggest it's a lethal weapon that will turn your face to hamburger, not a good proposition. Originally I did hope the Feather would at the least be a good training tool as a prelude to a proper straight razor but this does not appear to be the case, both razors seem to require different skill sets. Anyway a big Hello to all.

Welcome!

I would recommend a regular straight. Get the full kit from whippeddog.com - it will cost much less than a Feather and you will have all you need to explore straights. In the unlikely event you don't like them, you won't be out a lot of cash and you could probably resell the kit easily (as you could any straight or Feather).

However, the urban legend about Feathers being meat grinders is somewhat overstated. I don't think they are a good 'in-between' for going to straights but they are certainly not difficult to use. I found the Pro-Guards to be very similar to a sharp straight - some of the others hate the guarded blade but I like them (and the other versions, too). Like any very sharp razor, just be mindful of your angles. Which... gets us back to using a normal straight first. A nice sharp SR is a joy in itself and you can learn all about how to use it right in the comfort and safety of your own home. ;-}
