View Full Version : I don't do WTG anymore

I have found that WTG does little for me with a DE whereas with cartridge WTG was all I needed.
So now I get a very close shave with XTG + XTG (other way) + ATG. This results in a closer shave than if I was to do WTG, XTG, ATG.
On special days I might do a four pass shave: WTG + XTG + XTG + ATG so I feel stubble free in all directions. Though even with my above 3 pass without a WTG pass I do not feel much if any stubble at all when touching my face WTG. I use a Feather blade btw.
Are there others here who don't do WTG?

I do one pass with, and one pass against the grain.

I do one pass and only one pass, but instead of worrying about WTG, XTG, ATG, I just follow the natural motion of my body.

Have you tried one pass XTG and one pass ATG instead?

I am unable to do anything with my body in an unnatural way. How is shaving WTG not natural?

Glad You have found something that works for you! I have a hard time going ATG and getting iritation. I have always had this problem. No mater how many passes I do befor I try to go ATG, I get irritation. I go 1/2 way betwen XTG/ATG, but I cant go full ATG.

I've actually started doing two WTG passes, and some touch ups. Been working wonders for me.

I only do a WTG pass when I've skipped a day or more.
Otherwise, it's straight to XTG.

if you have substantial growth on the day of your shave (or your beard grows quickly in general), you'll probably want to do a WTG pass first to reduce tugging on subsequent passes. but if you have very little growth at the start of your shave, you're free to start XTG or even go straight to ATG if your beard is soft enough

Perhaps fccexpert could give a more detailed explanation of his method. We are all willing to learn here at B&B. Isn't sharing our knowledge for the mutual benefit of all members what it is really all about?

Oh yep, I agree. I forgot to mention I shave every day now but if I miss a day when I didn't have the time then I do a 4 pass shave (WTG, 2 XTG, ATG).

ATG only
I used to do just XTG because it was closer, but it's also harsher. So now WTG does good enough.

I do no WTG either. It was a waste of time for me.

I do XTG, XTG, ATG on my neck because the grain faces out toward my shoulder on either side, and it feels awkward to shave WTG out from my adam's apple. So instead I go down, up, and from out to in.

My grain is similar probably. It goes straight down from my cheeks and spirals out toward my ear. And does this number under my chin -/|\-. So I'm all over the place really (even do what I call reverse j-hooks on my WTG pass). But I still manage a WTG, XTG, and AGT pass in different directions for each quadrant of my face. It really has helped with nicks and closeness.
I highly recommend people let it grow for a few days and study their growth to determine what their WTG pass is. Your routine may not be as simple as "down, across, up."

Whatever works for you! I find that WTG is like a good foundation on a house. You don't always see it, but if its not there, you're in trouble.

When I do my first pass, normally WTG, I find myself doing a combination of WTG and XTG. Then I finish with my second pass doing a combination of XTG and ATG.
