View Full Version : Permasharp super
Hi bought a few of the russian version , but these seems to 'rust' pretty easily as per pic, like 48 hrs after each new blade change
comparatively the silver blue do not get these rust stains
experts are these rust stains?
wonder if the permasharp contain some level of carbon steel

I've used a bunch of them, and I've never seen a spot of rust. Blades from a bad batch, perhaps?

blades came from bestshave FWIW; I suppose this is where everyone is getting their permasharp blades

I got mine from an eBay seller and have never seen any rust on them. Try dipping your razor head in some alcohol after you shave.

I have the same thing happen to a lot of blades that come from Petersburg Products in Russia. Astra Platinum, 7 o'clock super platinum, Sharpedge and a couple others. I'm not entirely sure why it happens, it doesn't happen to Gillette blades made in India, Lord razor blades, Feather and others. But the russian P&G blades for me it's pretty common. Maybe the stainless strip they use just doesn't jive well in certain environments?

They all contain mostly carbon steel, also at least 11% chromium, otherwise they couldn't get away with stamping "stainless" on them. Most razor blades contain anywhere from 9% to 14 % chromium, with those containing less than 11% getting a stamp with chrome-something, or none at all.
I've seen a bit of rust on some of the 7 o'clock yellows I've used, also on Dorco 301's, and a bit on Treet Durasharp carbon steel blades, but nothing like this. I've used two Perma-Sharp Supers from the same source, but don't remember seeing any rust.
At the end of each shave, I open up the razor some and rest it on the tip of the handle and the side of the head, allowing water to drain away from the edge, as shown in the photo. Leaving it that way for a half hour or more gets most of the water away from the blade, then I hang up the razor with doors closed but loosened to allow air to circulate.

That's right. Just because a product says stainless steel, dosen't mean they are all the same. There are different grades of stainless, the lower ones do rust, just not as readily as standard steel. I have a stainless exhaust on a couple of trucks, but it is a mild stainless with plenty of surface rust, but it has never rusted through. Compare that with T304 aircraft grade stainless which you could probably soak in saltwater for a year and it wouldn't rust. Hope this helps.

Had the same experience with a tuck of 7 O'Clock Yellows, so it may be common with blades from the St. Petersburg factory. That said, the discoloration never invaded the edge or affect the shave.

I've used quite a few Perms - for about 3 shaves each, but with every other day shaving I leave them in for about a week. Never had a single blade look like the ones in your picture.

I've been using Perms for several months. I take the blade out after each shave and pat dry the blade with t-paper (lately using alcohol) and clean the razor. Have never had an issue like you have with the Perms. Bad batch maybe?

Perms and Yellows are my main blades, and I've yet to see any rust. I merely rinse the razor post-shave in hot water, loosen the top, shake a few times, pat the razor dry, and place it upright on an improvised stand. I'll keep an eye out for the problem. I have a very big order of Perms on the way via eBay and recently received a big order of Yellows from Connaught.

the only time i've seen blades rust they were rapira blades. But nothing like those pictures. Never had any problems with Perma Sharp either.
Here's an idea.. maybe try them in a different razor? Some metals interact strangely with each other.

I only saw this when I rubbed the blade dry with a towel. Never seen it any other way. Seems to me your badge is either uncoated or a major fault of the QP departement.

Oh and a more chemical question: won't the alcohol bath mess up the factory coating. I think it is possible that it will dissolve or at least becomes soft so it will be more easilly affected by corrosion.

No need to rinse the blades with alcohol, they dip them in Vodka in the plant.

Were these the Russian perms or the Turkish Perms? That MIGHT explain it a bit. All mine are Russkie and have yet to see this.

Pastic box + Gold printed 'Perma-Sharp' = Turkish, made by Permatik Celik Sanayi (Old stock from the old factory in turkey, they moved the production to St-Petersburg in 2003)
Carboard + Black Printed 'Perma-Sharp Super' = Russian, made by PPI, same place as the SI.
These are Russian, if they were Turkish you could read Celik Sineyi on the blade.
You can see the difference here (http://i.imgur.com/qrYcx.jpg)
Honestly, from the information I've gotten from a really kind man who lives in Turkey the upper dispenser on the picture comes from the St. Petersburg plant and those blades are made for Procter & Gamble.
Early Perma Sharp batches from the St. Petersburg plant came in plastic dispensers. These blades and the current made blades in cardboard dispensers shave identical.
Later they switched from plastic dispensers to cardboard dispensers in St. Petersburg, the blades are identical.
The same thing with Astra blades: early batches made in St. Petersburg came in plastic dispensers, later they switched to cardboard dispensers.
Only the blades in the dispenser in the middle on the picture are made in Turkey and have written Celik Sanayii on the blade wrapper. The upper version has nowhere written Celik Sanayii, not on the paper, and not on the blade wrapper and comes from St. Petersburg.
