Hello Everyone,

I've been wanting to get into DE Sahving for awhile now so I finaly manned up and bought my first set. Let me know if I'm one the right track. BTW I have been cutting my face up pretty bad. Wife sasy I have a week to get this straight or it's back to MACH 3. So let me know if there's something wrong with what I bought.

-Proraso pre-shave, shaving cream and after shave
-Frank's shaving DE Razor and silver tip Badger brush
-Feather Blades.

See pics.

Welcome!! I would focus on technique, since I can't comment on what you bought. Check out the wiki here, watch lots of videos, and read up on tips. I would recommend starting with just the brush and cream at first, and make sure you have mapped the direction of your beard properly. Once you can build and use a good lather, then get used to a 3 pass shave with your Mach 3 (WTG, XTG, and ATG) then you can try the DE again. And remember, no pressure and take your time.

Just a guess are you pressing on the razor? Let the weight of the tool do the job, you can get by with one pass then work your way up to doing 3 or 4 passes

Is there a huge gap on the head of the razor? Can't tell from the picture but it looks like it would be VERY open to the blade.
I am new myself, best advice with the above is GO s l o w.

Take your time & enjoy your shave, welcome to our little club of pleasures :)

Two of the most important things you can do is practice lathering (paying attention to the quality of your lather -- it should be slick, creamy, and yogurty, not thin, bubbly, and airy) and ease off the pressure (unlike a cartridge razor, use only as much as pressure as needed to keep the razor in contact with your face). Try two WTG passes and call me in the morning.

Welcome to the board... There is a ton of great information here. The sticky thread at the top of the checking forum was helpful, as well as manic59's videos. I am fairly new my self, only been DE shaving 7 weeks, I read a lot of tutorials, posted a few questions here, and tried my best the use what I learn. Patience was the hardest thing, for about two weeks I forcused on technique (blade angle, pressure, and lathering) and I only used two passes with the grain. I got decent shaves, but still scratchy. But as my technique improved I added across the grain passes and started to get some very good shaves. Good luck.

Welcome!!! The best advice is to be patient. You have your whole life to become an incredible DE shaver. Just focus and let it come.

Welcome. I found that initially I needed to keep the strokes short - no long sweeps with the DE. I've never used Feathers but I've read that they are very sharp. You may want to try a sampler pack of blades to see if another blade will be somewhat easier on your face. My first week was pretty bloody :O Good luck.

Welcome aboard!

Good advice above. Read the fantastic sticky here

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/71700-WET-SHAVING-INSTRUCTIONS-AND-TUTORIALS-New-READ-THIS-THREAD!

And patience, practice, right angle, no pressure. I've been DE shaving for over a year and there are some days.... But in general I get daily smooth shaves! If I got it you will for sure!

BTW Don't trust SWMBO, trust your brothers here at B&B!:innocent::wink2:

So let me know if there's something wrong with what I bought.

YMMV/subjective. If you want feedback we need to know a lot more about you and what you're looking for. As stated above, sort out technique first before blaming equipment and supplies. Pressure is typically a common issue as well as beard mapping.

Have to agree with what's being said. Take your time, concentrate on technique on both lather and shave. Use no pressure, and go slow.

Also, I think your wife is in the wrong for putting you in the spot. Do you do the same about how she takes care of her skin? No? Then she can shut up and be supportive. It all comes down to skincare. Once you get the hang of it, the quality will be noticeably better.

Is the razor three piece? If so, is the base plate upside down?
Kind of looks like it from the picture above, but can't really tell.

Hello and welcome to b&b! You're getting some great advice here. One thing that I wanted to add was that the worst de wet shave was still pretty good compared to cartridges for me. Even when you don't get that close comfortable shave it will still be a lot more enjoyable than using canned foam and a cart.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum!

Good advice all above. Feather is hardly the appropriate blade to learn with, no wonder you're experiencing troublesome shaves. Buy some different blades or a blade sample pack to experiment with.

Hi and welcome. I started with the same razor. It looks good for the price but it is not that good of quality. The three three piece does not line up correctly on the head from eventual wear from you locking the blade in place. Mine wore out in about 2 weeks of use. Also the blade does not sit smoothly in as it should. It has to be pressed in and it causes it to be crooked. This is why your cutting yourself up and getting horrible burns. Even with good technique, with the blade being crooked You will still tear your face up. Also if you get alcohol on the wood from cleaning it will ruin the wood. And eventual rot the wood. I ditched it for an EJ DE89 and never looked back. Honestly ditch the razor. I PIF'd mine

Welcome to B&B.

1) Keep the Mach 3.

2) Start by Mapping your Face. No Map = No Shave.

3) Learn to Prep the Beard. Shower first, Shave second.

4) Learn to Build Lather from Cream or Soap. In a mug, in a bowl, in your hand, or on your face.

5) While showering - Get the Beard wet soak it for several minutes (about 3) and use a moisturizing hair conditioner on it.

6) Get out of the shower and get ready to shave. Build the lather. Rinse your Face with warm/hot water (feel the stubble), apply the lather and do a WTG Pass.

7) Rinse your Face (feel less stubble), apply lather and do a XTG Pass.

8) Rinse your Face (feel less stubble), apply lather and do a Reverse-XTG

9) Rinse your Face, how much stubble if any, apply lather and do a WTG Pass, then repeat the steps above.

10) ATG Pass is done after you are use to doing these other passes first. So maybe in a couple of weeks.

11) Feathers are suppose to be the sharpest blade. So becareful

Hazy, you could be right! Though I've never used such a razor.
Snazarian, do check it up just in case. It could be part of the problem, for sure.
