View Full Version : 2nd Brush Info Overload

I've read a number of threads about choosing a 2nd brush, but each time I read one, I end up having the same questions. Can you please help with these questions?
My Status:
- I've been using a DE and Brush for about 3 months now.
- I have an Edwin Jagger Small Best with a 19mm knot.
- I use triple-mill soaps and lather up in a bowl.
What I think I like/want:
- I like the idea of my face being scrubbed when I'm applying the lather.
What I don't like:
- With my current brush, I don't like how with pressure, the brush fans out, like cherry stems. I'd like it to stay in place, normal to my face, and scrub a dub dub.
Some questions:
1) Why would I want a bigger brush? What am I missing out on? Do bigger brusher whip up lather faster? Any other advantages? It seems like a smaller brush would offer better control.
2) Why would a brush that's good for soaps not be good for creams too?
3) Will I still get a nice scrubbing with a nice soft-tipped Silver Tip/Super?
4) Is this true: A shorter loft will give me more scrub on the face, but take longer to lather up in the bowl?
5) Based on reviews and recommendations, seems like I can't go wrong with Shavemac or Savile Row. But I like the handle options that Muhle-Pinsel offers, would I be missing out on a better brush for aesthetics, or is MP in the same league as Shavemac and SR?
I greatly appreciate your assistance and thanks for all other posts about brush choices.
Regards,
Shahriar.

Sure...
My Status:

Off to a good start.
What I think I like/want:

So you don't want flexible and floppy.
What I don't like:
- With my current brush, I don't like how with pressure, the brush fans out, like cherry stems. I'd like it to stay in place, normal to my face, and scrub a dub dub.
All brushes are going to splay...the looser, more flexible brushes will more than others.
1) Why would I want a bigger brush? What am I missing out on? Do bigger brusher whip up lather faster? Any other advantages? It seems like a smaller brush would offer better control.
Bigger brushes are just that...bigger. Provides a different experience and makes more lather. Not really an advantage, but different. Smaller brushes are easier to control.
2) Why would a brush that's good for soaps not be good for creams too?
This is a myth. You can get any brush to work with any media...however, a soap brush is usually firmer which aids in picking up soap from the puck.
3) Will I still get a nice scrubbing with a nice soft-tipped Silver Tip/Super?
Yes...as long as the brush is dense and firm with soft tips.
4) Is this true: A shorter loft will give me more scrub on the face, but take longer to lather up in the bowl?
Shorter loft means firmer...shorter bristle aren't as flexible as longer ones. Don't worry about the time.
5) Based on reviews and recommendations, seems like I can't go wrong with Shavemac or Savile Row.
Great brushes...firm and very soft.
But I like the handle options that Muhle-Pinsel offers, would I be missing out on a better brush for aesthetics, or is MP in the same league as Shavemac and SR?
Sorry, can't help you here.

No problem.

Cant beat Bob O's answer but dont pick a brush just for its aesthetics. My suggestions would be either a SR 3118 or Rooney Style 1 Size 1 in Super.

I had been using a CE Best Badger for several month. Finally I decided to get a Silvertip. So I bought a Saville Row 3124 (24mm). Charles of QED talked me through the information so I could make an informed decision. Boy I am glad I bought this brush. Its full and luxurious against the face, but not floppy or wimpy. I have been using ever since I got it (about 3 weeks). Today I decided to give it a rest and go back to the CE. What a difference. The SR 3124 is fantastic. I was going to get more brushes to build a collection. Now I am happily using this fantastic brush.
It may have even cured my Brush AD!......maybe.....still looking at a custom ShaveMac and/or the B&B release this year.

I'll echo these sentiments, if you want a brush that will not splay as much as your EJ. Muehle actually makes the knots for EJ (or so I'm told), so I would doube the Muehle brush will be much different than your EJ in that respect.
I like the Rooney Style 1 Small, or if you like a slightly longer handle the Style 3 Small. Super or Silvertip ($10 less) will fit the bill.
If you prefer the bulb shaped brushes, the SR3118 and SR3120 are good brushes, in a nice size, and will run just $10-20 more than the Rooneys. Best of luck.

Thanks everybody for helping to clear the fog in my head.
I've since looked at the Rooney Size 1 Small and I think I'll get one of those soon.
Cheers.
