Scuttle lather help

So I just got my dirtybird 1.5 scuttle last week and every time I lathered this week the lather got extremely bubbly and airy. I tried more soap more water less water and nothing could help the airy lather. How do you get a nice thick lather from a scuttle? It seems the ridges super aerated the lather which allows for a lot more water in the mix both give me a nice thick lather without tons of air bubbles. What are your techniques and do you get a thick lather or is this just how a scuttle lathers?

Try plunging your brush (but not to hard) every 30 seconds?

Also try and started the initial mix with a Tad more water on your brush than you may usually, sounds to me like a dry mix.

When I first got my scuttles, using water that was too hot really broke down the lather from the very beginning. The large surface area of the 1.5 also creates a different feel and technique than when using a smaller bowl. I would use hot tap water, and play with your technique and product/water ratios until you find what works well with your brushes and the large scuttle. You shouldn't have to change much if anything, and it will be well worth the effort once you start enjoying the warm lather. I hope this helps some. I am sure many others will chime in with great advice.

Oh, I also found that in a large scuttle like the DB, building your lather in the bottom of the scuttle rather than trying to utilize the whole surface area will help concentrate the lather making into a more confined and tight area, which should result in a less airy lather.

Yeah, water that's too hot will break down the lather. Just use hot tap water and see if that doesn't help.

Also pumping your brush into the center of the scuttle should help get more product into your brush.

The 1.5 DB has a larger surface therefor your lather will be exposed to more air. In my regular DB 1.0 after i make the lather the brush bristles fill almost the entire surface of the lather bowl, so less bubbly lather for me.

Coming from a 6" bowl this scuttle feels small to me so I'm learning to lather in the smaller area. I tried lathering with a much drier brush than normal to start off with and that helped do the trick this morning, my lather was much less bubbly and decently thick.

The 1.5 DB has a larger surface therefor your lather will be exposed to more air. In my regular DB 1.0 after i make the lather the brush bristles fill almost the entire surface of the lather bowl, so less bubbly lather for me.

the 1.0 and 1.5 will be no different in breaking down lather, let's be realistic, it's 1" wider and the same depth.

as for the breakdown, depending on how hot your water is, that is likely the cause. what product you are using will also play a huge factor, as i've recently found out. MysticWater soap does NOT like heat. every time i tried to scuttle lather it, with hot or warm, it broke down like crazy. RR on the other hand, holds up nice.

it's not the size of your scuttle, it's the product (you may need to use more) and/or your water ratio.

you will most likely find, your pass #1 the lather is thick and creamy and why you go for pass #2, you will have to whip it up for 10-15sec to bring it back if you are using hot, hot water.

i have NEVER used boiling water, just tap water as hot as it runs.

I agree, I've had all sizes of scuttles & it makes no difference.

I have noticed that ARKO does not like heat either, it broke down pretty badly but Palmolive and AOS did not. AOS soap is the best performer that I have tried in a hot scuttle. It stays very rich and creamy.

My hottest tap comes out about 200 degrees so I turn it down quite a bit when I fill the scuttle. I doubled my loading time from 20 seconds, which is plenty for 6 passes if I wanted to when using a regular bowl, to about 40 and that seemed to help with the scuttle. With soap being cheap considering how long it lasts I don't mind the extra that is used here. I test lathered with some Malaspina Cream Soap that I just got and it worked perfectly. Never tried this soap before so in the morning I'll give that one a go and see if I can duplicate my results of the test lather.

like "eyesofgrey" also said, the size of the scuttle has absolutely no bearing on how the lather will break down.

we are dealing with small sizes here. yes, if your scuttle was the size of a bathtub, perhaps, but not a 1" difference.

1" makes a big difference in some things :winkiss:, but not lather breakdown in scuttles

i've had lather breakdown in a scuttle before too, but it's usually something i'm doing wrong or the soap is just not "heat friendly". i lathered RazorRock King Louis this morning, in my DB1.5 and it stayed thick and creamy for 3+ passess. and i used the hottest tap water possible.

keep at it, once you get the scuttle lather down, it's amazing. i don't try to make my soaps/creams last, especially with new ones when i'm just learning them. once you get work out the process for a new product/bowl, you can then start using less if you find you are wasting 3passess worth of lather after you are done shaving, and adjust your water accordingly from there.
