View Full Version : What do you travel with?

I recently acquired a DE shaving set consisting of an EJ DE89 razor, Simpson Colonel, a giant tube of Proraso shaving cream plus the Pre-shave, giant alum block and a big bottle of WH.
If I was to travel, I wouldn't want to pack all of that just to shave. So my question to you is, what do travel with/what do you suggest?

Most of my travel is overnight or two nights max - so I just do carry-on.
As a result DE is out - too much hassle with the blades - so I have in my wet pack all the time:
Gillette Sensor Excel and carts
EJ travel brush (you can use your travel brush of choice)
Shave stick, have been using Speick but it is just finished. Have put Euro Palmolive in an old glue stick as the replacement
A small bottle about 10ml that I got a sample of Trumper's Skin Food in re-filled with aftershave of choice
If I needed it I'd pack a styptic but with the cart it is not necessary.
Is is as good as my regular gear, no. It is pretty close though and gives a good result. It also makes me appreciate my shave at home more too!
Using a cart this way is not expensive as the infrequent use means that I get a fair bit of time out of them. I brought a bulk lot before I started DE shaving and still have some left. In any event the twin blades are much cheaper than the 5/6 blade things.

My travel kit of toiletries had a spare cartridge razor in it from the time I had such a requirement, although in the 1970s, the cartridge type would have been a TracII in whatever toiletries carrier I used. I never packed a brush, cream, or soap, although I used all at home. Barbasol sold a "travel" size of their foam, and that's what was in the setup when it first existed. After I got financially strapped, I traveled much less, on shorter trips, and relied on the Norelco rechargable razors in my cars instead. I can get a perfectly acceptable shave using a Sensor razor with ordinary leisurely preparations, but I can't buy new handles for those any longer. I have three, however.

I put my witch hazel in a tiny glass spray bottle, it takes up so much less room, and is a pleasure to apply. I bring my standard brush with a shave stick. I am looking for a replacement for my full-size aftershave though, way too big and heavy.

If I was to travel, I wouldn't want to pack all of that just to shave. So my question to you is, what do travel with/what do you suggest?
I travel with the same stuff I use at home (DE89, Feathers, hard soap, DRH AS, alum & styptic as needed) except the brush. The travel tube won't accommodate my regular brush so I use a different brush for travel. If I only have a carry-on I pack the Merkur Twin Blade and some Trac II/GII carts.
I suggest you do what works for you as your preferences aren't in line with my own. Everything I use fits neatly into my Col Littleton shave kit.

A Tech, a Palmolive stick, a small boar brush, a pack of blades, and a tube of RSC balm (or leave that out and just use cold water - I rarely get any irritation or burn).
Whenever I fly I always have check-in baggage, so carrying blades is not a problem.

I pack my straight razors (in a case), soap, and a brush. If it's a short trip (less than one week) I leave the strop at home and strop on the heal of my left hand. I do pack my strop on longer trips.

99% of the time:
Atra or Sensor
Any good brushless cream (KMF, Alba, or travel cans of Foamy/Barbasol/Edge in a pinch)
Small bottle with Nivea Sensitive balm
On an extremely rare occasion - when I have no issues with shared bathrooms, etc. - I'll bring along
a Lord head on a Parker 97R handle (poor man's HD) with some store brand Personnas. Everything else
stays the same.

Not to go too crazy, but I want to pick a good brush for travel. I hear nothing but good things about the Wee Scot, but I keep thinking in my mind it will be a tad too small to really enjoy. I was cruising WCS and figured I'd pick up the Simpson Travel Case, but what should I try to fit in there? It listed a Duke 1 as a possible candidate which I think would be more fulfilling, and I can probably use it in my daily rotation. Any thoughts? Suggestions?
Also, are there any advantages to using a shave stick vs. a small tube of shaving cream?

Thinkgeek.com they are called squishy bowls... The large I use as my lathering bowl now and the small is my travel bowl... Both work great because they are rubber and give a lot of friction to make lather
Thry are far and away my least classiest bowl but my favorite especially when I'm in a rush... It's a lather champ... Like palm lathering except it's all contained

Simpsons makes a brush called The Case which is made for "the case". You can use it at home... I do. It is a killer face lathering brush. I still travel with the Wee Scot as it fits in my very small (5" x 7" x 1") "bag of tricks"

This is genius! And in a pinch while traveling you could use the bowls to actually eat something out of! After doing a search found them at REI here (http://www.rei.com/product/752844/guyot-designs-squishy-bowl-and-cup-set,-slate?preferredSku=7528440014?cm_mmc&mr:trackingCode=798D071B-81F9-DE11-BAE3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA), they're made by Guyot Designs. They come in different colors.

Sounds gross, but when I go backpacking, I shave and eat out of one (with a thorough rinse between, obviously). My face itches really badly if I don't shave every few days...

I actually purchased the Wee Scot on WCS earlier today. I figured I'd give it a whirl and see how it goes. I appreciate the suggestions though. I can say with certainty that I'll be trying more brushes. I'm keeping my eye on that Berkeley.... :001_smile

How's the Major? My initial thought would be that the handle would be uncomfortable/too long.

I just made the switch to DE shaving this past December and I travel almost 100% of the time. Here's a photo and list of my dopp kit contents:
230254
Merkur HD 34C, Chrome Plated
Israeli Personna DE blades (missing from photo)
Proraso Shaving Soap - scooped out of tub and stored into Nalgene travel bottle (white contents)
Vulfix Pure Badger Shaving brush with travel tube (I have been lathering on face directly, but plan on ordering the squishy bowls referenced above by Heespharm (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/member.php/50766-Heespharm))
Aveda men pure-performance dual action aftershave (sample size, the brown tube next to toothpaste)
I didn't realize I couldn't take DE blades as carry on because I knew a buddy that used to fly with them and this was well after 9/11. I guess they changed their policy sometime between then and this past month - I was taking them as carry on from past December through most of February and they were never confiscated, luggage never went through secondary inspection, etc. However over this past month they were confiscated three times in a row! When I finally went onto TSA's website sure enough, DE blades are clearly listed as prohibited.
As a result I just went ahead and ordered the following earlier today from Amazon. Checking bags just doesn't fly with me!
Colonel Conk Traditional Safety Razor - accepts Gillette Trac II cartridges: $8.58 for "gold" color, could care less about crappy color! (Amazon page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OJ7QAE/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details)) 230258
Personna cartridges for Gillette Atra & Trac II razors: approx $0.40/cartridge (Amazon page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002A6KFI4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A2UILHLLDUMCAM)) 230252
Leather Double Edge Safety Razor Protective/Travel Case with Felt Lining: $13.77 (Amazon page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O8NCI4/ref=oh_o00_s00_i02_details)) 230264
Will be trying out this Col Conk razor with the Personna cartridges compatible with Gillette Atra & Trac II razors. Decided on these after reading up on them here at B&B and elsewhere. Cartridges are cheap and will certainly do for my trips lasting less than a week. Any trips lasting a week or more I'll go ahead and check luggage, packing the Merkur in the above leather case and DE blades...

It's great for either face or bowl. If you like a short handle you can use it without screwing it back into the cover. Last December I did a winter trek in Iceland with my son where we were in a tent about half the time and shared the brush everyday. It performed like a champ in pretty adverse conditions; dried quickly & whipped up a great lather.

I picked up a couple of samplers - one was from Geo F Trumper and the other from Truefitt and Hill. They consist of small containers (good for 2 shaves each) of all of their shaving creams, plus assortments of their aftershave balms. They were quite inexpensive too and are great for short trips. Now as soon as I remember WHERE I got them, I'll let you know...lol.

This is what I do:
Injector Type E (my travel razor)
badger brush
Valobra soap
*I found a prescription pill bottle that my brush fits into. I make sure it has dried overnight and slip it into the bottle, handle down and cap it. The Valobra is a soft Italian soap and is moldable so I have mine pressed into a small Pyrex bowl. When at home I just leave it open and when it's time to travel I grab the cover and snap it on, good to go. Pyrex is glass but nearly unbreakable (it has been tested by my 2 year old). Voila!
