View Full Version : Look at my Big Fellow!

On my way to the doctor (I have a bad case of strep) I had a little time to kill and I entered a small antique shop that had been closed every time that I have driven by it. I figured I'd go in and lo and behold I found three razors. A Slim in need of cleaning, an underrated Knack, and a Big Fellow. Wow, I was taken aback. I'm too excited to clean them but I needed pics for a "before" demo.

Not yet. I do have a Tuckaway and a Critierion NEW Deluxe but this thing is a monster. It needs a good scrubbing. I gotta be careful since it's silver plated.
I wonder if I got strep from all of these old razors?:confused1

Sorry for the delay. I was at traffic school for a not making a complete stop.:001_unsur The good news is that traffic school was on my computer and I passed.

Here are the clean-up pics. For the Slim and Knack I let them sit in near boiling water with Lyme-Away. After that, a good scrub with a nail brush and wash with dish soap. The Big Fellow was soaked in scrubbing bubbles before being washed in dish soap and polished with Blue Magic.

I was going to try this one: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/146433-New-Baking-Soda-amp-Aluminum-Foil-Trick-Photo-Tutorial-for-Restoring-Silver-Razors
But I've had good luck with Blue Magic and silver (not gold plating, it wears it off ).

Maybe we should start a Open Comb rescue group here on B&B? Warn all the members of the dangers of Open Combs, and have them send to us for disposal....and we will be generous....we won't charge them a penny for our service...we will do this simply out of the kindness of our hearts, and the love of our brethren.....

Now that is great advice, I need to rember this and duplicate it. Brilliant.

Need to start a Zero Tolerance For Open Comb Club, and have the others members send to us, because open combs are bad, and we only have the knowledge on how to properly dispose of them.

Sounds plausible to me. After all, we do have the proper training and equipment to handle these dangerous objects. Being highly trained professionals, we would be commiting malpractice if we didn't help rid the world of the scourge of OC razors.

SWMBO recommends that we start an Addiction Disorder Recovery & Treatment Center, and as part of the treatment have everyone send their OCs to us, in order to help prevent relapse. After all, friends don't let friends use OC razors!

Thanks for sharing your find with us. I'm still too new to recognize any given razor by name, but, I do appreciate the fine workmanship that went into these great old treasures. I now have my wife and sister-in-law seeking out old DE razors in their treasure hunting. One Antique store close by where I bought the GEM SE a couple of weeks ago, had just sold several DE razors right before my wife went into the shop. My loss. But, she left my cell number with the fellow who owns the shop, and he promised to give me a call when he gets more in.

Don't let these crazies get to you. It's in good fun!
I'd recommend creating a network of family and friends to look for these gems. Also, scope out your area well and revisit. It can be frustrating at first but it pays off. Befriend antique shop proprietors (they have connections). One last thing, always ask. Many members can tell you that they have found some amazing razors by just asking.
Oh yeah, when you're going to the doctor, make sure to stop at any thrift/antique shop along the way. Do make it to the doctor though. :thumbup1:

First of all, no OC assault team is coming between me and my Big Fellow............................:a33:Now that I've taken care of the that, let's get to business.

The shave:
This thing is big, hence the name. Due to it's large size, it finds the correct shaving angle for you. You can't claim that this razor is top-heavy in any way. Finding the right balance is a breeze.
One thing I noticed when holding the handle is that though the knurling is very deep it does have a slicker feel. I wonder if it's due to the silver plating. However, a little pinch from the Alum bar allowed me to have a secure grip.
My previous shave was with a complete opposite (1940 Gillette Milady) and switching to this was like switching from a Porshe to a Mac truck. I loaded it with an Astra SP (my go-to OC blade) and loaded up some lather with an Omega Mighty Midget (very nice scrubby mixed boar/badger) and VDH luxury soap.
I went for 3 passes today. My experience with my Tuckaway and Criterion New Deluxe has taught me that I don't need to have a multiple pass Mantic59 style shave with these guys.
I decided to go with a XTG, ATG, and blade buff ATG pass. The plan worked!
There was no irritation (except for a tiny weeper from a tiny zit on my neck). Starting with a XTG pass was not a problem. I don't have quill like beard growth but the Big Fellow plows it down like no one's business. Blade buffing was fun and I did not have any irritation whatsoever. For my post shave, I rubbed a block of Alum on my face to assess the damage........but no irritation, just an invigorating tingle. I closed with some vintage Avon Wild Country from a keg-style decanter and had a positive feeling about my day. The Big Boy's a keeper.
The New Improved and NEW style razors (long comb) have a rather nice combination of aggressivness and smoothness unparallelled to no other OC's that I've tried.

Krona nice review, but just remember BOTOC (Brotherhood Of The Open Comb)as I like to call it (I know Johnnie and Arley have different names, but hey....it was my idea) is here to save you!!

Just as Botox has saved many of a woman from unsightly wrinkles, we at BOTOC want to save our brothers from unsightly nicks, cuts and weepers. All members of BOTOC have been properly trained in the use and removal of open combs for our brothers.

We want to dispel the myth that open combs give superior shaves, and for that purpose we must kindly request your Big Fellow be shipped immediately to a member of BOTOC. if you read your post...did you not see this evil tool cause a weeper on your neck?? The horror!! Let us save you brother!!

(BOTOC is a secret society dedicated to the return of OC razors to the founding members. Any question regarding membership is strictly prohibited. All rites, rituals, and razors are the exclusive property of BOTOC and must be returned to the sacred brotherhood)

Well Johnnie, since we sorta let the cat out of the bag..but see what happens when B&B members ignore the SMOSH and BOTOC? they get bit....

True. And maybe one day we will convince everyone that OCs are evil! The shave is so close, it eliminates the need for a 3rd & 4th pass. Think of all the poor razor blade companies that may be put out of business if this is allowed to continue! Not to mention creams, soaps, brushes, that aren't used. And the joy of the longer shaves!

All of these razors have new homes but I do have an old-type Big Fellow and I'd say it's more aggressive than this one was. Not to say, that this one wasn't. It's a pretty hefty razor with nice balance and straight forward angle of attack. The craftsmanship on the older models from this era are superb.

Sounds nice I'll be trying out my first vintage gillette shortly so who knows if I'm pleased with their milder shavers I might chance my arm with a more aggressive model.
