I have seen pictures of both. The new "Manchurian Badger" looks different from the past. The past "Manchurian Badger" is mostly thought to be renamed Simpson Two-Band Super Badger from the Carter/Woodhouse era. Apparently, the term "Manchurian Badger" was a creation of Charles Roberts, of Method Shaving fame, for branding Simpson brushes that he sold. You'll also see some Simpson brushes from the Carter/Woodhouse era that are marked "Extra Super." If my memory serves, Mark Watterson mentioned that he calls this new grade of badger hair "Manchurian" because it comes from that region of China. However, Mr. Watterson is an excellent marketer and promoter. I am sure he is, in part, playing off the mythical status that those old "Manchurian" brushes have on the forums.

I wouldn't mind owning one of the new brushes. I tried to get Mr. Watterson to make me a Tulip 4; however, he told me that the Manchurian Badger hair is not long enough for such a brush. I might have to find another brush I like to try this badger grade out. I read that it is fabulous stuff.

The loft on that thing seems very uncharacteristic.

It's certainly a much larger knot that my other Chubby brushes (both pre and post Vulfix).

DrP may have further information on it as, that's whom I acquired it from last year.

Look how smooth and even the top of the knot is,and perfectly bloomed.Just by looking at the photos you can get an idea of the supreme density of this heirloom.

It is odd Mark said that because they make a Tulip 3 in Manchurian. They also make a Chubby 3 in Manchurian with quite a loft, so the Tulip 4 should be fine for that hair as well. ??
