Honed a razor today and finished on a vintage coticule I picked up awhile ago. Had a great smooth shave, but it wasnt as close as usual. Theres plenty of variables but I was wondering if this is normal with a coti or maybe i need to do a little more work on the edge?Ive only ever finished on a Naniwa 12k before so i really dont know what to expect of the coti.
Also as I was honing I got wondering if you can tell The layer a vintage coticule came from by the pattern in the rock? somehow I doubt it but maybe some of the experts know more than I do.
Needless to say, after sitting in my counter for a year or so this coti is gonna see way more action. Thanks!

Just keep practising. I can get as close a shave off a coticule as anything else. There is a bit more of a learning curve to get the maximum edge off them, though. It's not as simple as a Naniwa.
You cant really tell what vein of rock vintage coticules come from. They are most likely from a vein or mine that is not around any more.
If you really want to see what a maxed out keeness Coticule edge is like put a layer of electrical tape on the spine and give it 30 or so laps on just water (Unicot edge).
Identifying Coticules mined prior to Ardennes owning the mine is not really possible. No matter, you have a Coticule, so it will produce a wonderfully smooth, comfortable edge (provided you do your part).

i find that a coti edge just doesn't quite have "IT" for me...... i find ~20 laps on CROX or diamond spray or equivalent gets it wickedly sharp enough to make me happy....

Ill definitely try the tape. Crox too (something else thats been sitting around for ages) the smooth comfortable shave is definitely there but like you said the "it" is missing. Thanks for the tips guys!

Whats the verdict on how much to put on the strop? I read some where just to do X's then spread it out, but then I see others with totally green strops...
Oh yeah, did you strop the hell out of it on linen and leather? Coticule edges really benefit from linen.

a little dab will do ya....... i make the x's and spread them out *(wear gloves... trust me... CROX with oil is also known as "green paint" and it goes a loooooooooooong way... lol **(ask me how i know))
too much is really just a waste of crox...

I put on a thin, but very even coat. It would still work fine if it wasn't so neat, but it would just bug the hell out of me looking at it. I'm a bit OCD like that. And it means I never really have to reapply the CrOx.
