Hi all

So this is the tale of my first DE shave. I've been a regular Mach 3 user for a decade and know the ropes of wet shaving mostly thanks to this forum and /r/wicked_edge. My dad has been rocking a short boxed beard since forever so no help there. I've probably watched every mantic59 video there is at least twice to make up for that paternal oversight. I felt ready.

Face lathering went smoothly (thanks to this thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/40745-Face-lathering-tutorial-another-way-to-a-great-shave%21)) using TOBS Sandalwood and Mühle pure badger K3 brush, although I now wish I had sprung for a softer brush. So I plug a Derby Extra blade into my Merkur 23C razor and have at it. Half way through the first pass I'm like "hmm that's weird, I don't recall applying aftershave". Aaargh it burns! :blushing: No nicks or cuts though. I'm just glad I had a celebratory pint before the shave.

All in all it was a decent first shave, but I am looking forward to becoming better at consistently angling the blade. From what I read, a lot of people have had problems with Derby Extra lately so maybe it's a bad pack. Gonna try my luck with corking it and applying less preassure, but if that doesn't pan I have a pack of Astra SP blades ready. Thanks for all your great advice B&B.

Welcome!

I like the more aggressive Feather blades.

Good luck.

I too was a lurker once. But then I came out of the cold and into the warmth and camaraderie of the B&B forum. There are so many people who share your interest in shaving. There are probably people who share your interest in other areas and hobbies also, you'll find out with time. Welcome former lurker, and enjoy your new found acceptance.

Welcome to B&B. Let me also add you may find the Astras work better for you than the Derby.

As in learning anything, patience and discipline really help. One advantage to learning to DE shave... you get instant feedback!
