View Full Version : What are your top three razors?
Mendel

In the spirit of my still popular thread regarding your top five soaps, I am back again wondering what are your top three razors. Mine are :
1. Edwin Jagger DE 89 (plain chrome handle)
2. Muhle R89 Rosegold handle
3. Gillette 1959 SS
I appreciate open combs , but they're not for me . So I'm wondering. Should I add a Fatboy, a Slim, a Mergress , or a Feather stainless next?

I do own a Slim and Super Adjustable as well, and they shave well (and quite similarly to the fatboy). The head on the slim has a shorter profile, so is a little better under the nose area. I like the Fatboy boy better primarily because of the handle. I like a thick handled razor, and one that's pretty heavy. In terms of the overall shave though, they are really similar. You wouldn't go wrong with a Slim, and many prefer it (and the SA) to the Fatboy because of the head.
By any chance do you own a slim as well? If so, why do you prefer a Fatboy over a Slim?

Not in any particular order, but Fatboy, Slim, and 40s Superspeed, though the Red Tip SS is up there, too. I just received a long-comb OC in the mail and have only had one shave with it, so it's early to tell where it will fall.

I really like my Merkur 34G (Feather blades), Gilette Slim (set on "7", Red Personna blades), and Merkur Vision (Feather blades). I could live with any one of them as my only DE razor. The Vision is a nice razor but requires frequent take down maintenance and is a lot more expensive than a 34G or user grade Slim. There are many razors, including well regarded razors, that I have not tried. My comments are an affirmation of what I have used and liked well, but should not be construed as having any negative implications regarding other razors.

So far, just a couple weeks in, it's:
1. Fat Boy
2. Fat handle Tech
3. DE89l.
Have not yet tried my Slims, Aristocrat or Black Beauties.
Behind the razors listed above, I'd say it's:
4. Red tip
5. "48-"49 Superspeed
6. "50s Superspeed
7. Ball-handle Tech (perhaps underrated sitting this far down)
Those are the razors I like. Hey, seven, just enough for a week-long rotation.
The Kiwi
04-21-2012, 12:34 AM
I will interpret that as "favorite", not as "best-shaving". And I like either a Gillette Slim Adjustable set to 7, or the regular length Gillette Super Adjustable set to "8", followed by the Gem Micromatic that looks like a Clog Pruf, but without the embossed dot on the top door.
Anything along this line is extremely subjective, and likely to shift around, on short notice. I've used a older model Injector than the one I'd taken to college with me, a G-8, and gotten nice shaves, although I believe I need more practice, because I can't handle my blind spots with it. Within the past couple of days, I bid on a Schick Hydromagic, very similar to what I had in 1957, and as can happen in auctions, spent more on it than budgeted.
I want to find out if I can get the spots under my jawline I can't see clearly, with this I model, and do a better job on the very end of my chin, which for some reason, I often need a pivoting head Sensor razor to finish up on after most any fixed blade / fixed head razor.

Best looking razor would be a really clean, pre-war Fat Handle Tech with nickel plating. Just a really nice looking razor.
That's three I guess.
Update: The Fatip won the shoot-out. Since previous post, I've sold both the Long-Comb New and Fat Handle Tech.
1. Fatip Grande
2. Single Ring
3. Ball-End Old-Type
Tastes change.

Are we going with best looking or best performing on a daily basis?
I like my '63 Slim, TV Special, and Weishi for shaving. For looks, my 1929 NEW is grand.
I was never specific in the original post. Go with best performance. That's what i did in my revised favorites above. And it just so happens, they are good looking razors as well.

This far rotation include 12 different new models and 5 vintage.
on an aggressive side best feeling gives Muhle R41 2011 model (really love that aggressiveness, wonderful!)
on medium side clear winner is Parker 3 piece (45/48 or 91R, can't decide, love them all, same head different handles)
and mild class heroes are Muhle R89 and Merkur 23C (again heads gives same kind of feeling with different kind of handles. In 23C I use extra parker 91R handle)

So I'm wondering. Should I add a Fatboy, a Slim, a Mergress , or a Feather stainless next?
My fave 3:
Futur
Fatboy
Weber
Mentioned in despatches: EJ89 and HD
Buried at sea: Parker R89 (there are good ones out there - mine isn't one of them)
The Fatboy is a legendary razor (perhaps the most legendary razor of the "recent vintage" era... ?) - that would be next for me if I didn't own one. Owned a Feather AS-D1. Truly beautiful razor with a remarkable finish, but the way the blade is held provides very little gap. I know people get on well with them and are rewarded by the time they have taken to find the "sweet spot" - I ran out of time and sold it. My Weber DLC provides a way better shave, although its finish is not as good. I'm also pondering the Mergress next. Or maybe a Fatip.

Agree with this about the Fatboy, but would also add the Slim just because the longer handle just works better for some people, and you absolutely can't go wrong with the Mergress. I have a long handle that I just got two weeks ago. Its not in my top three yet, but that might be because I'm not completely used to it yet, but it's already replacing my Futur which I'm probably going to sell because the Mergress is so good.

My top 3 razors:
1949 Gillette Super Speed
1965 Gillette Super Speed (flare tip)
EJ DE89BA Barley Chrome
I find myself settling into a single razor: '49 SS. It is just about perfect for me. I love one piece design. It allows me to practice blade removal after each shave and rinse/clean razor without much fumbling. With 2 or 3 piece razors this task is a bother for every day. With a 1 piece I keep it clean on a daily basis and the blade goes back int wrapper which I put a small tear in every time I use the blade. That tells me how many shaves are on the blade. I have embedded a small rare earth magnet into my den shelf which holds the blade. Works great. I think I am still curious about the slant and the OC as well as Merkur Adjustables. However, my 40's style Super Speed is pretty much delivering everything I need for my daily shaves.
Best... Stahly Live Blade. Even without the vibro-motion, it has the most well engineered shaving head ever made. With the vibro-motion, the lower head/safety bar floats on springs, so the razor and blade can freely move across whiskers as you shave. Most people aren't even aware of the complexity built into the razor head. For me, nothing else come close....
Second best... Merkur 38c HD... Not a bad razor at all. I like the weight, the handle length, and the Merkur head geometry is pretty good. It makes a good travel razor, or just something different to shave with on occasion. Not a Stahly by any stretch though.
Third place... Everything else. Vintage Gillettes, flea market finds, and old hand me down gems. Some better than others, none stand out.

He-he. Wait until you get SBAD, then hang on to your wallet... :) I find that I could do (and have been for the past few weeks) with just an undated late 40's SS on the razors because once I am used to one I like to keep it going with the angle and pressure and other razor-specific things. The brushes, though are almost frivolous in shaving, I mean you could do with a very inexpensive boar and be absolutely fine, but each brush has a personality and I find myself not being able to stay with just one or two (two you can actually justify by saying they need to dry fully between uses). I am not bad at controlling my SBAD. I try to buy-one-sell-one approach and now only have 6 badgers and two boars (the other way around would have been cheaper). And, like you, earlier this year I hated shaving...
Enjoy!

I only have three. However, the order of preference is 1) Edwin Jagger DE89 Barley, 2) Merkur Slant 37, Feather Popular. I use the Edwin Jagger most of the time, as it provides the most consistent and pleasurable shave. The slant provides a great shave too, but the chance of irritation can be greater as well. I tend to use the slant when I have more than a few days of beard growth and my face has had a few days of not being touched by a blade.

(My almost 60-year-old mother just about plotzed when she saw the fatboy: "That's exactly the razor my father used!").
Next up has to be a LC British New. I don't suppose anyone has one they'd like to part with? Most of the stuff on Ebay is crap, ridiculously overpriced, or both.
