I was watching this eBay auction with great interest. Very cool set. While I like to own vintage Gillettes, I also like to shave with them, and I don't consider myself a collector. But this set made me consider starting a collection. I don't have a link, but the item number is 330689494242

Whoever won this, please post pictures when you have it in hand!

You mean this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_rdc=1&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=330689494242&nma=true&rt=nc&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3 F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp5197.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3 D330689494242%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&si=8g3v3E6OC7GLJuvVU7QDPPVXEjs%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc)one?

A #4 set according to the wiki (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Numbered_British_Gillette_Information) - correct?

How come you didn't pick it up? Just down the road isn't it?

Yes, that no. 4 was just a short drive away. And believe me, I was tempted.

HI

i was going to post when I got home to ask why such a high value ? I was hoping it was a flat bottom plate due to the brit pat that was posted .... but according to Wiki it is diamond...

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Two people wanted it enough to push up the price - that it all that it takes. Notice that the third highest bid was 'only' $200 and fourth highest $150 - the final price is really set by the person who wants it almost as much as the 'winner'.

The Populars are not that common and I think this one with the 'black' handle even less so. Add to that the relative scarcity of the #4 case and I think that you have your answer - but somebody more knowledgable than me will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I've only see Achim and Ras120 with one of these, but I'm sure a couple of others must have them too.

My set (which I recently sold on the BST) came with a two-piece British NEW like in the #77 and #88 sets.

OOPS - my mistake. I was close though :biggrin1:

Achim (Mr Razor) has a black handled popular on his website here (http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/One-Piece open comb/1940 (K2 on blade) black Popular France.JPG). That may be what I'm thinking about too.

So maybe we haven't seen a #4 set before???

Edit: No we have seen them. Achim has one shown here (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/259147-Safety-Razor-of-the-Month-Gillette-Travel-Sets-November-2011?p=3583779#post3583779) and Jake does as well as seen here (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/259147-Safety-Razor-of-the-Month-Gillette-Travel-Sets-November-2011?p=3591649#post3591649).

I've the same #4 set but with a silver plated Popular like Jake set
Achim has a #4 Traveller with a two piece new too.. so what is the correct match ? NEW or Popular?

Rarity. Its a black handled popular in that set = super rare. I have not seen that combination anywhere. You got that set and some populars above, but not a black handled in that set.

I was bidding, but $260 was a bit high for just the rare factor (for me).

Yep, the #3 bidder was me and I should've been paying more attention. I really wanted the set mainly because of the black handled Popular but it was at the end of a good day and I had a nice relaxing drink in hand when I remembered the auction. When I got to the computer I saw I was about 5 minutes late to increase my bid... and I would've. Curse you Jack Daniels...hah. Congrats to who ever picked it up.

the outer shipper from my #4 set says 1934. The Popular with the Barber Pole knurling comes 1939. The 1938 Popular looks like a Senator.
